Wow! Thank you guys so much. You put my Shiitake question on there, sweet! You told me what I have been thinking; Shiitake need sterilization not pasteurization. Darnnnnn. Guess I'll need to go out and get a autoclave.

Hi Kandice - yes, Shiitake can be tricky to grow the low-tech way, but still possible especially if you can use a strain adapted for pasteurised substrate. I'd recommend also having a look at one of our previous videos where we talk about growing Shiitake on logs: th-cam.com/video/oOPjCM_Z-Eo/w-d-xo.html

@@GroCycleTV Thank you for your reply. I learned something very important from your answer on the video. I didn't know there are different strains of shiitake. I was previously ordering from one company with no problems growing shiitake with pasteurized substrate. Then they stopped producing spawn, so I had to order from another company. That's when the mold problems started. They use another strain! Wow! So now I need to find a company that produces the one I had success with. Thanks so much for that information. I have already watched your video about growing on logs. I originally wanted to grow that way, but we live in Hawaii and we don't have a lot of the right kind of trees available. So that makes it difficult.

I think a really good question that could of been asked is the following: What do you actually do with the waste water of lime pasteurization? For commercial farm scale I assume there are obligations for waste disposal of this byproduct of the process. Do you amend it with acids to turn it into a base? Do you dispose of the lime water through the sewerage system? I'd love to know how it's handled.

in the states here in minnesota our fields are mostly soybeans and sugar beets both are heavily sprayed with toxic chemicals, nasty. i see in this video you mention using both of the plants in pellet form to grow shrooms. that is all i have to say about that.

I am a brewer who has been wanting to set up growing oyster mushrooms from my spent grain, and "sell" them to our kitchen to make food out of.
I have been learning a ton from your channel. Thanks.
Question: Do you think if I took the grains immediately from my mash tun, and did a hot hydrated lime bath, then drained the grain throughly, before inoculating it with perhaps a high percentage grain spawn (say 20%), that it would increase the percentage of success?

once you get a liquid culture onto grain, and it has had time to expand; how do you go about inoculating the rest of your grow bags from the grain bag,.without introducing contaminants to your pasteurized or especially your sterilized substrate?

    I two questions:
    1) You always talk of hydrated lime. Burnt lime (don't know if the Englisch word is correct but I think you know what I mean) is far more alcaline I think so why aren't you using this as you would need less I think?
    2) I used beech sawdust until now and sterilized it which is very hard to do at home because of the small pressure canner.
I would like to pasturize it in my much larger waterbath Canner pot but how hot and for how long would you recommend?
How are the chances it will work when not using straw?

  • @beebeevino276
    @beebeevino276 ปีที่แล้ว

Can you add your spawn into your substrate mixer after you have drained off the hydrated lime and water? Would that make it easier to then load into the bales with less work and chance of contamination?

is there any kind of air filter in your fruiting rooms? I understand the need for cleanliness in the incubation room and lab area, but once the fruit is in the fruiting room is it established enough to fight off pathogens from the natural world? say I wanted to grow mushrooms in a shed like area, is it a problem is unfiltered air is getting in? I see people talk about exhaust fans in their setup and doing fresh air flushes. How often should that exhaust fan be running and how does this fresh air flush work?
once you have pasteurized your substrate and got it in a bag, how do you inoculate it with the grain spawn without introducing contamination? do you put the straw in the bag and immediately put the grain spawn in too before sealing?
if I grow mushrooms and use all my grain spawn, in order to continue the process, do I need to cut the center of a good mushroom, to clone and grow some mycelium on an agar dish and then do the grain spawn to substrate process again? Could I just pinch off a piece of one of the bricks if it isn't infected and throw that in a bag of grain?
what temperature is your fruiting room and incubation room for oysters on straw, and how crucial is temperature, at this point if temperature is not too important I will just buy a shed to dedicate to fruiting; instead of getting an a/c exhaust fan etc.
if I pasturize or super pasturize my substrate, and get it into a bag, could I possibly leave it to incubate in a shady spot outside, and when I go to place it in the fruiting room just wipe it down with alcohol first?
why don't you guys use five gallon buckets with holes in them and wash them? would normal dish soap not sterilize the bucket enough? I want to produce enough mushrooms in my dad's backyard to generate 500 usd per month and you guys are helping so much! does 70 pounds or so per week seem like enough to do so? I want to get an autoclave and air filter for a lab etc eventually. But for now may just do straw based simpler methods I have seen from you guys, and hope to start with pink oysters and lions mane mushrooms. Is lions mane a good candidate to grow on straw?
hope to hear from you guys and get started on building my future ASAP! thank you for making these awesome videos.

Do we use only the stem or use the leaves too of rice plant for oyster mushroom cultivation? How long should we boil straw in water to pasteurise it, and how long with steam pasteurization?

You know when you're growing a mushroom and the oxygen gets a bit low, you end up with a variant, you often end up with an unorthodox variant, right? Isn't that what Lion's Mane would have initially looked like being that it grew in a nitrogen rich environment?

If you planted Chrysanthemums around that outdoor grow you likely wouldn't have run into the same problems. Chrysanthemum works as a natural pest deterrent. You'll likely find the problem was the soil though. With a lot of crops, especially mushrooms, the soil needs to be rotated. The more efficient the crop, the faster you can use the soil again. Thanks for the vid though! Very helpful!
