I met him in 1980 on the Williams-Brice field as the Gamecocks were in shorts about to have a walk-thru practice, it appeared. I was a teen having finishing a 10K road race at the 50-yard line; and i asked someone which player among the crowd was George Rogers. Someone pointed him out with, "that's him over there in the purple shorts". He was the only one in purple shorts, which i thought a little odd given that USC's colors were garnet & black. I approached him and asked for an autograph and I'll never forget his immediate reply BEFORE signing------he said, "you want all these other guy's autographs too don't you?"-----and he motioned his hand all around at his teammates. THAT, to me, IS George Rogers! It taught me a huge lesson in humility with greatness that i obviously never forgot. Thank you Mr. Rogers for representing yourself and Gamecock football with such power & grace.
P.S. Not quite 30 years later, my young son is getting George Rogers's autograph and we're getting to hold his Heisman Trophy before a game at Williams-Brice again........and I mentioned the above story to George, and mentioned those purple shorts........he smiled that big familiar George Rogers smile and laughed as he said, "Yeah i DID have purple shorts then; i forgot all about those!" Thanks again for allowing me to share these small but marvelous memories.

George let his feet do the talking.
My dad still paid for season tickets at that time and I went to about 4 home games the last season he played.
It is said that you are good at your profession when you make it look so easy that anyone looking on says or thinks, "I can do that."

They are showing all of the great runs but usually he would pick up like 2 yards or something. I remember vividly when he used to play. They literally gave him the ball every single play and then everyone was surprised when he had rushed for like 100 yards by the end of 4 quarters. I'm sure I'll get a lot of hate for this comment but it really didn't seem so impressive back then or today. 2 yards x 50 plays is 100 yards.

Lowest YPC average he had was 4.4 - highest was 6.0 in 1980. Try again.
