I'm a vegan for health reasons and because I feel that this is healthiest for my body. I don't force my diet or beliefs on others, and I don't believe it's right for everyone. Every group of people have their outliers and their crazies.
It's not an idealology, a religion or a cult - it's a diet.
Veganism is a luxury diet. Soybean farming kills tens of thousands of animals and disturbs/destroys just as much animal habitat as any other food source.
Can confirm this is happening in CS departments across the country. Thankfully they’re easy to pick out, and no matter how intelligent they are, the best thing to do is avoid hiring them, nothing but trouble.

Very interesting - I am reminded of the Baader-Meinhof (Red Army Faction) in Europe during the 70s where highly ideological middle class Germans were prepared to kill for the cause.

I think those groups were more easily explicable - they arose in Germany and Italy among young middle-class ideologues fuelled by guilt over the crimes of their parents/grandparents in WWII, and of course were given money and support by the Soviets whose goal, as ever, was merely the mindless propagation of nihilism and chaos in the west.

As a software developer, I’m worried about the future of AI. I don’t think that idea should be compared to climate change alarmism.
Both are legitimate fears. The parallel is that neither has a coherent solution and the anxiety creates positions of power for people to take on gatekeeping roles.
Maybe but arguably researchers in these fields are justly in gatekeeping roles. These are a world away from race and gender grifters

LLMs will certainly have an impact, but I doubt we are anywhere near close to AGI. Although the AI safety thing is a way to propagandize the LLM ecosystem.
Religion isn't just this thing we need to check an evolutionary box so we can achieve maximum efficiency and cultural stability. The way people talk about religion lately is gross. As if they are all the same so just pick one, do it in private and get back to work.

@livenotbylies yeah...I noticed this trend after Covid and other problems that some people started waking up to things but they still weren't quite ready to connect the last few dots. They recognized the value of religion...Christianity...but it was something for the masses to do...not them. I wasn't so fortunate as to feel satisfied with something like Trump potentially returning. I had to go deeper and back further to make sense of what's the rest of this iceberg. I don't pretend to have it all figured out but I'm definitely standing on firmer ground now.
You literally just described it perfectly. Every religion is a product of its time and is suited to the needs of the people of that time. That's why there are as many religions as there are languages. And that's just right now. We don't need to imagine the number of religions there have been in human history. And yeah, they are all basically the same. So pick one and get back to work.

You've got the continuity backwards in relation to Rationalists and the AI Doomerism. Yudowsky got into AI doomerism first as a spinoff from immortality discussions on cryogenics discussion groups, then when people weren't convinced by him, he was convinced everyone else was irrational. Thus, he started the Rationalism movement to make people "more rational" (by believing what he says and converting to AI doomerism). The Rationalism cult movement combo of "shut up and calculate" Benthamite Utilitariansm, psyche hacking etc got big on its own somewhat, but it was always meant to be an onramp to the AI doomer cult stuff.

Yeah I was looking for somebody to say something about the [Bay Area] Rationalists. I’m friends with a lot of them, and lived in a Rationalist group house (not quite a commune) at one point in Berkeley. Spent more time in the Boston community in Cambridge, but I thought within the Bay Area they were more concentrated in Berkeley. Some of them definitely gave me this vibe of “trans- or trans-willing/supportive free love soup” So I’m not entirely surprised to hear this although I wouldn’t have guessed Vallejo.
But anyways, some dots connect but not all the dots connect - what’s the actual link here, and how far does it truly go or not with regards to the Rationalists being a part of this story centrally or peripherally?
But yeah when you sever your connection to your intuition-based right-brain in worship of perfect rationality and logic only, you leave yourself vulnerable to being led into a logical argumentation based on-ramp into a cult, which in its self-pursuing logical-extreme conclusion turns out to be about AI doomerism and AI risk/alignment etc.

This sounds like an absolutely fascinating story. You need to give us more. Even just keywords to look up. I have heard nothing of this.
I was somewhat involved with these people many years ago. There was good and bad, and a lot of weird stuff. I still strongly agree with the dangers of building superintelligent minds. You can make fun of the people saying it, but the arguments are simple and logical. Back then the argument was always it was far out sci fi nonsense that will never happen. Now it has somehow become the stated near term goal of the top five companies in the US stock market. Yet somehow no one is even questioning if this is something we should be doing.
I"m old enough to remember when most people were concerned about building human intelligence ... not "artificial intelligence."
What was the context for fearing building human knowledge?
Has anyone found the story or a key term to look it up?

@@robertmarshall2502 i found they are talking about the "ziz cult" or "the zizzians." There is one New York Post article covering it and that's about it. There's also one or two short clips of interviews with the author on youtube. Not much else that I found.
@@Houshalter Thanks, I did find a more local newspaper which had some proper details but I can't find that now. In multiple other news sources for it they just outright don't mention the "T" element which I can't help but feel a little conspiratorial about.

The idea of minimising pain and maximising pleasure as a total philosophy actually goes back to the British 19th century Utilitarian movement, which pre-dates the modern Marx-influenced left. There isn't much new under the sun in the ideological landscape, although the terms "left" and "right" seem to get progressively less and less clear!
Darwinism was the original form of New Atheism to such a massive degree that all these Atheists seize up like a hydrolocked engine the moment you bring up evolutionary forces and humans in the same thought.

Each of these philosophers experienced culture similarly. They may have vastly different experiences in the same "sandbox of culture" for lack of a better term. The same can't be said of the countless modern autistic people who've adopted transgenderism as way to understand how they fit within culture. The sandbox in which they have played in is vastly different than anything that pre-21st century technology could offer. We as a species are venturing into unknown waters where history itself is unknown or so vastly different from the present that it no longer serves to inform as history once did.

During my childhood, we had access to virtually no compute or network. Today, we carry globally networked computers everywhere we go. Humanity was ill prepared for the data age and worst still, we gave this technology to our children, as if it were a toy.

-Large oversized clothes to to accommodate for sensory issues or covering undesired features like adam's apple.
-Hyper fixation on transitionary objects like the "blahaj" or other plush dolls, either for senory comfort or as a stimming mechanism
- General discomfort or sensory distress from body hair or other features like one's chest or body odor. ( Aslo this don't just apply to men, the a large portion of women who get "top surgery" are often Autistic as well )
-Genaral interest in Manga, Furries or some other niche hobby, often with some aspect of escapism or self-insert, such as having a personal OC, Fursona or "Kinnie". ( "Therian" and "Tulpas" also count and overlap, but that opens up an entirely different theory of mind )
- And finally the subject of the video, expertise or "savantism" in regards to computers or any highly technical field, for example Medicat, a USB Toolkit based on Ventoy which is commonly used use for Desktop Support, was created by Jayro who identifies as "NB"
This goes to a certain extent were i honestly believe it to conspiratorial in some way, either for mere profit or some measure to keep Autistics from reproducing. Either way i see as a threat to our future bloodline, as i do believe we can manage to provide benefits to greater Society, or even manage to develop our own cultures, like Martha's Vineyard.
