Oh man, love it! They came onto my radar when I was up in Svaneti in Georgia. I quickly noticed that every local taxi and car crawling around having a reliable go of things was a Delica. They ran laps around the rest of us, and even the Subari I was in seemed outclassed on the back roads. Sounds like a perfect fit for you and your needs! What a fun beast!
Excellent choice of van Tom! We've had a couple of these over the years here in NZ and they are great for adventuring. Our current one (1995 2.8L Diesel Manual Space Gear Green Field) is kitted out with a bar up front, bigger tires, snorkel, and a full tray roof rack. Can take it anywhere, and perfect for the sketchy ski-field access roads we have here!
I had one for over ten years. Best vehicle I ever owned until the underside just corroded beyond repair. I took the rear seats out as well & converted it into a mobile printing station for my equestrian event photography business with display screens at the back and all powered by 5 x 110Ah batteries and a 2kw inverter. It was a good earner and paid for itself over & over. Good luck with it, it's a lovely drive...
i was thinking that too, does the drones have a follow me function or something? also like of setting up gopros on roadside and stop and start driving lol, also of time involved just making all them shots foe a few seconds, but worth it.
Just a campers tip Regarding the battery pack, fully depleting the battery is ill advised. Try to not deplete more than 50%. So in effect, 100 watts will be 12 hours. Also, the wattage draw of a kettle or sandwich maker is important. Just be sure the battery pack’s inverter can consistently supply the required watts, not just the capable surge wattage. Eg. Some inverters will say they can supply 2000w but that could be the a surge value (turning an appliance on) but the real supply wattage can be much much less, sometimes half. You can get your mechanic to install a regulator switch under the bonnet and cabling from the switch to inside the van, which allows the alternator to charge the battery pack while you drive the van. No need for solar. The switch is automatic so no fuss. The switch knows when the main vehicle battery is fully charged, then switches to charge the battery pack. It’s a constant process. Food for thought anyway. 👌
I absolutely get why you bought the Delica, the old Japanese people carriers are rock solid and were well ahead of their time when they were made. I bought a 3 litre petrol auto Toyota Alphard in 2016 to use as a camper, I never converted it but the back seats turned into a massive bed and I had some great sleeps in it. The engine was a Lexus RX300, factory fitted by Toyota, absolutely beautiful, nearly silent and pulled like a train, not bad considering mine was also a 2002 model. I had it for 18 month and every time I drove it it felt like a special occasion. I came out of work and sold it, I won't lie, I got less than half what I paid for it.....3 grand, and paid 7 for it as an import. Best vehicle I ever owned, not cheap to run, averaged about 25 to the gallon, but I still feel priveledged to have owned it. The Japanese were and probably still are, the masters of this type of vehicle, you made a brave but smart choice, just as it turned out for me. You'll love this van, you've made a very informed move buying it, it's a bit daunting what with importing, the age of the vehicle, getting insurance etc. The fuel bills will eventually become a massive reality to you, however, everything else outweighs that.....just enjoy the sheer enjoyment of owning it and the pleasure of driving it.
Hi there I was a Delica owner for 3 years. I had a 25yr old diesel very capable 4x4 used it every day. Watch when in 2wd the tail can come out. I have been off road in UK with LowRange adventures. There is a FB Delica owners club with great advice. Will wait to see what you do next. Moving to NZ where the Delica is still going strong. You'll love it 👍
I got a Delica couple of months ago. It's brilliant. For now I'm leaving the seats in. Fold the middle one by the door up and spin the other middle one and you've got a lovely den. Fold the middle and back row down and you've got a bed. Battery powered LED lights and the usual camping stuff are much more flexible and take up much less space than a kitchen conversion. (Mine is an 02 import from a dealer with less than 50k miles, for all the very good reasons you give.)
Hi, I've been looking forward to this since you said that's what you were going to do. I shall also watch you transition of it into a functional camper. I was diagnosed with terminal cancer not long after covid took hold and have had numerous conversations with my wife. I would buy an old van and travel the country exploring and taking pictures. However with travel restrictions and now my failing health, it's not practical. So I shall enjoy your adventures. Keep up the good work.
@@shanefiddle No worse than having to dispose of the used up batteries from all those electric cars that are supposed to save the environment, but will actually create more issues than they solve!!
@@Snowcatnz2 Not to mention the sheer amount of mining that has to be done to make the batteries in the first place. It's going to be an environmental disaster. There must be some serious money people behind this effort. It's obvious folly for the "real" environment.

Glad to see that you finally got your "new" vehicle for roughing it. Looking forward to seeing how you make it "you" as you discover new needs for comfort and convenience. I've done this for many years by putting a topper on pickup trucks and using it for camping. Once my wife retired we went all out and got a 24-ft tow-behind RV. Now, instead of camping, we are glamping. Simply adds to the joy of photography. :)
Haha car review by Thomas Heaton. Now I have seen everything. The price is very reasonable. I still sleep in my car as it is big enough for 3-4 day trips.
I had the turbo-diesel version, that I purchased when I first moved to British Columbia, Thomas. One thing I did to make my life comfortable while I travelled about my new province as well as a number of trips to the western USA states, is that I installed a second-hand convertible bed from a Volkswagen Westfalia. Nice to be able to pull over and camp and nap when needed. Cheers
WOW! One of my favourite photographers, he is reviewing one of my favourite vans. When I was 12 year old, my dad taught me how to drive with a Delica. At that time, the Delica means a lot to my family. Now, I am 32.

hi Thomas, your wonderful point of view shows us the more poetic side of nature, thank you. I wonder how you did to replace the original gazelle tc7 feet with the steel ferrules? I have the same tripod as you and I don't know how to remove them, could you help me? Thank's my friend.
Lovely van, the 3.0 V6 is a nice smooth engine. I have the series 1 L400 LWB with the 2.8 TD and i love it. It has always doen everything i needed and always got me home. Enjoy the Delica fun
Congratulations on the new ride. One thought, make your kitchen a slide out unit so you don’t have to always cook in the van. I have seen several campers done this way and it makes them very useful without taking up any additional room.
I’ve wanted a Delica for a very long time. I love the feel of those amazingly capable little vehicles. Importing a good one has always been my stopping block. Way to go Thomas! I’m envious and can’t wait to see what you turn it into.
Delica reminds me of my childhood as well. My family traveled a lot in my grandpa's Delica to go fishing, swimming and many other outdoor excursions. Drive safe and have fun!
Congratulations! This is so much fun :) In so many occasions you see people investing tons of money into 4x4 vehicles, while you (and the) know it will never see anything else than tarmac. Not in this case - if anyone makes 4x4 into good use, it's you. Looking forward to your adventures with the Delica!
Give me an 18 year old Mitsubishi over a new VW any day. These were everywhere in the Caucasus Mountains. If they can handle that then the uk should be no bother.
That motor looks like a young man's adventure dream machine. But me being an oldie, l will keep on dreaming about the nice campervan, that you had and maybe one day lol. Best of luck with it Thomas.
great stuff tom, you look really chuffed!!!! i imported a vehicle a few years back too, quite a similair story - and the single best thing i did to it (apart from installing a bed, cooker, safe, etc) was to pay for an LPG conversion for the fuel. more than paid for itself in the first year, with the fuel cost savings. plus the added benefit of a full LPG tank and full petrol tank meant no worries being stranded worrying about re-fueling. no doubt you've already got your own ideas anyway
I Guess Adam Gibs gave Thomas little bit peace of mind about what is Worth to invest and drive. It's nice to have Fancy van but it's sucks if you can't get to the places ..some people likes to brag about van life, same as some brags about camera bags. I think Thomas made good choice of getting rid of fancy one and getting more practical one.
Harvey, he said 2002 - it's the end of 2020 and the new 2021's are out now ....... 19 yrs old, so good enough for the legal age of consent to do stuff - in the van ..... ;-)
Thomas, besides your smart insight into photography, I enjoy your videos for the way you light up with almost giddy enthusiasm for the things that turn you on. You’re right, four-wheel drive giving you freedom and peace of mind. Looking forward to how you will trick-out the inside.
I'd have gone for a land cruiser but I still like your van. Appreciate in value, low box, diff lock and will go on for 500k plus miles with regular oil changes. Also regarding making a bed and units...buy 2nd hand worn out aluminium ladders, drill out the rivets and you have very sturdy weight bearing aluminium beams which you can cut to length with a mitre saw from screwfix with the correct blade. Drill your new holes and re rivet your frames the plywood over the top. Beam lengths will cost a fortune if bought raw.
Looking forward to seeing the update with all the additional outfitting that you are planning. Most of all, I look forward to seeing the photos that are enabled via your reach to new places.
Yes! I’m always a big fan of Mitsubishi!! This Delica is seriously an underdog! It’s 4WD system was and still is, in today’s standard, cutting edge. Can’t wait to see your upcoming modification to the interior.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto I have tested my Jackery 300 also with a 300 watt strobe and fires and charges , but reaching out to make sure it causes no issues with battery to Jackery, but another option if fine.
I'm jealous Thomas, definitely the sort of thing any photographer would want and I definitely understand the wish for better driveability in the snow/ice. At the moment I'm either B&B's or camping but would love something like this when I can retire - hopefully in a few years! Enjoy!
Your new ride looks fun! I know what you mean about the vehicles you want as you grow older. Just this week I bought a 2002 Ford F150 "flare side" that has all the options and a few add-ons that make it unique. It only has 57000 miles on it. I'm looking at tents that fit in the bed and an air mattress for camping. I live in Texas, so cold weather can be mostly avoided.
Hi, what a coincidence! I also live in the UK, I also photograph landscapes and I also bought an old Japanese car! 😁 But my AnTosia (Toyota Previa mk1) will turn 27 this year and I already love her to death, although I have only had her for 3 weeks! And I also prepare & repair her at an authorized Toyota dealer 😉 And I bought her for the same reason - because my Kia Sportage was too modern! 😄 My AnTosia is not 4WD but it is RWD supercharged with a mid engine! And I also want to make her a photographer's camper and she is also very thirsty girl! 😁 Stay safe and see you somewhere on the road! 😁
I use my imported Subaru Legacy for adventures. Rear seats lay perfectly flat and it's very comfortable. But it's a 4wd petrol turbo that does about 22mpg as well. Thomas you might want to check what fuel your engine prefers if you haven't already. Mine takes 99ron unless I get it mapped for UK fuels. So trips to the north of Scotland are out of bounds for now unless I get it mapped or I can put in additives to our crappy UK fuel.
Those front bull bars are just horrible. Very dangerous and totally unnecessary. The Damage you are doing to the planet with Importing a vehicle from the other side of the world and it the fact it does 20mpg is just a pollution is awful. You obviously have given your actions no thought and are only thinking about your selfish self.....
Thomas is not 'yet' thinking about the BIG picture where it concerns the beauty of nature, AND conserving it. Give him time, that will come. Meanwhile, kudos that he is recording it's beauty. Little steps. 😊
I've owned one for 3 years decked out as a camper with solar fridge water tanks etc I can live for weeks away from anywhere, I love it she has her quirks but they are a great vehicle, men is a 2.8 turbo diesel
Bought mine 2017 it’s a 2001 I travel in it it’s not my daily . It will out perform most modern 4x4 vehicles .been up steep narrow cut lines in the Rockys 3 feet of snow around the city in the deserts of Utah . I can go on and on . Great vehicle for adventures on a budget .
Nice van Thomas. That engine is as reliable as the day is long, they have enough power and are highly reliable. Being gasoline powered it uses twice as much fuel as the Ford did, well it's like that. I myself love vans and pickups for transport, not economical transport but for the outdoors people, perfect. One can do as one pleases with those types of vehicles. Enjoy it, looking forward to seeing it in the future outings. Regards, Duncan, SA
Hi Tom i own a Delica too here in Australia & they are a great van. I'm amazed what you've done with it & level of detail. Well done! You've given me some inspirational thoughts! Cheers.
Thomas, I'm behind on my TH-cam subscriptions, but I just got to this video today, and I was quite excited to watch because I've been curious about this van! Congrats, and I'm looking forward to watching you build the interior and put it to use!
This is so nostalgic to me Tom, my dad had this same van when I was young 😢 so many memories I told him about you last night and he now wishes he never got rid of it.
My first TH video find was the custom conversion. I own a custom and started converting it myself during the first lockdown. I love that you're now on the way to enjoying the self build process and making it work for you, as that is all that matters.
I drove a Delica for 2 Months in Australia. Was a Charme! Slick profile, perfectly big enough for one or two people, absolutely Offroad capable (traveled right after wet season and had to cross quite a couple of rivers, had never a problem!). Love that car and having an automatic for Australias long, straight roads definitely is a plus.
4x4 tip - a set of Maxtracks would be a good addition to you van just in case . They can help you get out of situations when just 4x4 won't do. Perfect for snow or mud.
Congrats. Looks like a good choice for your part of the world. At least you're not afraid to get it dirty and, you can customize it to whatever you need it to do for you. Have fun with it!
Excellent choice for the UK, small and not too high for the dreaded parking barriers. A simple awning and a bright reverse "light (change the bulb to LED) and camera" are some considerations to keep in mind. The camera could end up on B-Roll filler!
When you revved at the end of the video I saw a couple of pound signs shoot out! As someone whose converted my own van (Vauxhall Movano) into a camper I'll be watching your progress Tom.
You’ll love the tires, Thomas. Very quiet, like u said for an AT. Not a big fan of BFG, but they got it right with these re: K02 ... ‘bout time! In Canada, great tire so they will serve u well there. I had them on my RAM 1500 for 5 -6 years. Sidewalls did crack bad at maturity but Cdn winters probably contributed, keep them sprayed maybe to keep them soft but ur moist weather there might be better suited. Looks like a good find. Good decision with the dealer, worth the extra $$$ there. Look forward to the future feeds and the conversion.
These things do look pretty cool, I think you’ve made the right choice getting a fresh import too, they don’t have salt on the roads in Japan like we do over here in the U.K. so it will be in far better condition underneath. Like you say it’s good to have a relationship with a garage that specialises with them too so if you do have any issues with it they will have probably seen it before and know what to do to rectify it. Looking forward to seeing its transformation process, when you said about getting one with a roof ladder I wasn’t sure if you were tempted to try out the roof tent idea like your good friend Mr Page. All the best Tom, can’t wait to see the adventures you have in it 👍
Congrats on the new Delica! I used to dislike these vehicles as a teen, but I've learned to appreciate them more and more over time. I'm now at a point where I think they're cool. 😅
All the best to you, Thomas! I hope you have many happy photography excursions in your excellent vehicle. Can't wait to see the outfitting that you do.
Well done Thomas. It looks great & can’t wait to see what you do with the inside. We have a massive 4WD market here in Australia. I’ve just bought a Ford Everest, which does me for both SUVand off-road, photography trips. I’m definitely with you about the power bank unit, which looks awesome. I have two solar panels on the roof and a complete RedArc inverter and power management system in the back. There are better options (eg, Ford Ranger with box unit on the back for everything storage &equipment, plus a roof-top tent) but it’s suits me. On my first trip as we speak, but it’s a gentle introduction. 👍By the way, my son-in-law imported his car from Japan so I know what you’ve experienced. You got a good deal and sounds like you have a great dealer to work with. Have fun & looking forward to the videos.
So cool! I just bought my dream 4x4 sprinter this week as well so I can watch your build out as I work on mine too! I think for the way an outdoor photographer adventurer wants to use these 4x4 is a must.
Oh, as a car enthusiast I can really the joy in your eyes Thomas, talking about days gone by, and neighbours old cars. Sure this van is more rugged and robust than the other one you had. But you love for this one, will make you even more careful, in a good way. :)
Oh Thomas, you are no doubt an excellent photographer, I will admit to questioning your editing taste once or twice but as for your taste in vehicles...you struck gold!
Cool. Just bought one myself for almost the same reasons. A whole lot of van for the money. I have a 05 Space Gear Active Field. And I absolutely love it. I’m going to convert it myself too - something modular and simple - so it will interesting to see how you get on. Good luck.

It's 2400Wh (watt hours), not 2400kWh (kilowatt hours). One kilowatt hour is equal to one thousand watts, so it's 2.4 kilowatts.
@@pbsalfen i wasn’t listening what he said . i just know the product, well, the smaller 1500 brother. i think we know what he meant.
Lol, I did say that I didn't quite understand batteries and electrics. My bad. It's big though, which was my point 👍
Delica has the engine and genes of the vaunted Pajero
Yep, the Delica Spacegear is built on the Pajero platform.
Yes. The Delica is essentially the Mitsubishi Express Van built on the Mitsubishi Pajero platform.
Nice one Thomas. Great vehicle. Venturing into off-road territory and Nick Page music choice! Love it.
Give me an 18 year old Mitsubishi over a new VW any day. These were everywhere in the Caucasus Mountains. If they can handle that then the uk should be no bother.
Everything i like in one video. Photography, drone shots, 4x4, solar battery banks and modifying vehicles ; )
Looks good, just wish that I coud afford something similar so I can go away for even a night and not worry about accomodation.
Dude, it's was awesome how excited you were in the video :), happy for you! I am sure you'll do a great custom camper van conversion. Cheers!
That motor looks like a young man's adventure dream machine. But me being an oldie, l will keep on dreaming about the
nice campervan, that you had and maybe one day lol.
At 17 years old..perfect for the man wo shoots film.
19 yrs old, so good enough for the legal age of consent to do stuff - in the van ..... ;-)
@@kenwiberg6517 I am sure the van has seen plenty in it's 60,000+ miles
Thomas, besides your smart insight into photography, I enjoy your videos for the way you light up with almost giddy enthusiasm for the things that turn you on. You’re right, four-wheel drive giving you freedom and peace of mind. Looking forward to how you will trick-out the inside.
Video next month: I bought this rally car for landscape photography
I'd have gone for a land cruiser but I still like your van. Appreciate in value, low box, diff lock and will go on for 500k plus miles with regular oil changes. Also regarding making a bed and units...buy 2nd hand worn out aluminium ladders, drill out the rivets and you have very sturdy weight bearing aluminium beams which you can cut to length with a mitre saw from screwfix with the correct blade. Drill your new holes and re rivet your frames the plywood over the top. Beam lengths will cost a fortune if bought raw.
That’s an awful lot of calendars you need to shift.
Looking forward to seeing the update with all the additional outfitting that you are planning. Most of all, I look forward to seeing the photos that are enabled via your reach to new places.
Are you trying to get a job on top gear? All that was missing was the stig setting a track time.
Van should be smart once finished.
Yes! I’m always a big fan of Mitsubishi!! This Delica is seriously an underdog! It’s 4WD system was and still is, in today’s standard, cutting edge. Can’t wait to see your upcoming modification to the interior.
Do you think you’re Nick Page or something with those sounds 😂
I stole his library.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto but you didn't get a 4 x 4 truck. Ford and Chevy make those :)
Looks like that van is the perfect thing for you. Right sized and rugged. Stay safe and all the best from Canada!
WOW, the power pack costs more than the van!! 😃😃
No it doesn’t
@@james-r Jesting 😃
Lol, I know, but it's portable so will go from van to van.
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto Its on my wish list!! once the World gets back to normal 🙏🙏
Enjoy!
Is it the same Van that Adam has? ... Is it the same soundtrack that Nick usually uses?? .... uuummm.... Are you the real Thomas? ;-)
Lol, Adam has the better model and I think Nick got that track from me last year 😉 But who cares.
I noticed one little annoying light spot in the first drone shots. Then i realized it was a reflection off my forehead! :-)
2nd hand ANYTHING from Japan is always top-notch. The Japanese are not savages with their things like the rest of the world...
i watched your recent videos and omg...how you use this van makes me wanna cry but i love the modification into a car camp.
20MPG for a 4*4 van isn’t bad at all and the is a 18yrs old one
@@anonymoususer9140 oh really? I didn’t know that lol
I really appreciate and value the effort and work you put out as a one man band in particular with your drone, bts and b-roll. Well done!
Regards,
Duncan, SA
One of the best all round vehicles I have ever owned..school bus..work van...camped in it...off roaded in wales in it. Great in snow on the A1
Hi Tom i own a Delica too here in Australia & they are a great van.
I've had 2 of these. 1995 and a 2002. Except for the bad fuel economy they are built like a tank a great vehicle. Good luck and good journeys.
This is so nostalgic to me Tom, my dad had this same van when I was young 😢 so many memories I told him about you last night and he now wishes he never got rid of it.
I've had mine for a bit over 3 years, it is a fantastic van and quite capable as a 4x4
All the best Tom, can’t wait to see the adventures you have in it 👍
For me watching ur videos is watching the life that i wished to live , keep on ...wish u the best
That’s a sweet ride Tom!
I hope you had 1000’s of nice photos done through spending time in the new HeatonMovil!
Good luck.
