Chaske Spencer is phenomenal in this series. I hope Hollywood is paying attention to his talent and range. He has a real presence on screen - and that voice!

This is the best series I have ever seen! I am on my seventh viewing-full of nuance, and the actors deliver award winning performances across the board! I can’t wait to see what Spencer does next!

Oh yes. You're right. So good. The title track was channelling old Spaghetti Western music. Fabulous. Loved Mazzy Star too. In fact, all good. Deserves so many awards.

Loved this miniseries . Binged it in a day . Emily Blunt and Chaske Spencer had amazing chemistry.
This series was brilliant. Best thing I've seen in ages. Already watching it again. Put me through the ringer but it was just genius, on so many levels and for everyone, whether you know American history or not. Just couldn't stop thinking about it; still thinking about it. Most of that to do with Chaske Spencer and his and Emily Blunt's performance together. Chaske Spencer is a ***STAR***. He is on a par with any leading man in any film ever made. I really hope he get the recognition and the parts after this. Huge crush here!

This is the best series I’ve seen i years, fantastic scenery, storytelling & the chemistry between Emily & Chaske is electric…I found the whole thing very moving & exciting at the same time. Need to see more of Chaske Spencer, terrific actor & that voice I could listen to for hours.

It's a shame they don't give Oscars for television productions, because Chaske Spencer and Emily Blunt are only the start of all the people who deserve an Oscar for this amazing production. Golden Globes at least. Stunning performances all around.

I’m intrigued, but I have trouble handling excessive/brutal/in-your-face violence. Is there much of that in this show?
@@rachelrennie4149 There is indeed a lot of that yes, it's indicative of the time...but I promise you it's worth it if you can get past that part of it. ;) So very well made and stunning visually.

@@rachelrennie4149 Exactly the same. Just won't watch it or if I have to, I use the fast forward button. I promise you, if I can handle it, anyone can. Most of it is in your imagination and some in your knowledge of American history. There is violence for sure but it's mostly off camera and what you do see is something that I think you'll be able to handle. The story; the characters, Chaske Spencer!!!***, the old-fashioned love story is the payoff. I'm re-watching which I'd never do if it was too much. And the other thing is that the violence is actually in the tension - if that makes any sense. Once you re-watch, you know what will happen and you handle it better. There isn't the prolonged, nasty, sadistic torture scenes. I can't be doing with that stuff at all.

Hugo Blick's The Honourable Woman and Black Earth Rising were brilliant also, but this is definitely the one that knocked me sideways. Just brilliant. Actually want to buy to keep on DVD. Loved it and hope Chaske gets every award going. He just nailed Eli. The voice, the physicality, the quiet confidence, the man. Just loved him in this.. So good. Hugo Blick succeeded in creating a new Western hero and he did it in spades. Surely this should be awarded by the industry. I've seen nothing better in ages.
Far far more than a simple western. There is a lot going on here. Powerful and seriously addresses the sanitised mythology of the American west. Wonderful script, cast, production and cinematography. Kudos to all.
Totally agree! If this series doesn’t win award after award there’s no justice. Emily said the ‘air changed in the room’ at Chaske’s audition. I can believe it. Brilliant performances from both of them and all of the cast.
Best thing I've watched for ages. Beautiful on so many levels. Loved the relationship between Cornelia and Eli. Have watched it twice and I'm sure I'll watch it again.
This series is everything! Emily and Chaske are fantastic! Emily is always good, but she's reached another well inside herself for this. Cinematography, musical score, and cast are phenomenal. It all comes together and as she says, it's magic. I saw it on the small screen but this was a film experience. It's a pure sweeping epic and classical romance, presented earnestly without any irony.
It's a great series. Chaske Spencer is excellent, as is Emily Blunt. Federico Jusid's music was outstanding, too.
Didn't plan to but binged it in an evening as I wanted to hear the 2 main characters' stories. And such a great supporting cast. Rafe Spall's character gets under your skin.
I could watch and listen to Chaske Spencer all day! He was amazing! He portrayed Eli so well, he became Eli.
This show was BADASS. Top notch EVERYTHING. Highly recommended to anyone that likes Westerns.

Blunt's riding outfit is one of the most wonderful and beautiful costumes ever devised.
It's been a really long time since I saw something that stayed with me for days on end afterwards the way this did. A magnificent production with a tremendously gripping story line.
I'm obsessed with this beautifully done series. The chemistry between Cornelia and Eli is so unique to me. I remember the scene I think E1 or E2 when Eli takes the bow from Cornelia's hand and start flicking the bow string. I noticed that her right hand did the same exact flicking motion his did and stopped at the same time his did! It didn't look like it was part of the script. It looked so natural to me, now that's a connection.
both their voices, Emily's and Chaske's... love it and perfect for the show!
This passed us by on TV. ‘The English’? Sounds blah! Then I caught a trailer & thought this we would like. So watched it on iPlayer over 3 nights & LOVED it!!!!!!! My husband has Alzheimer’s but watched it as well & needed only a small reminder about the characters at the end ( mostly of where they fitted into the story). I adore Emily Blunt but had never come across Chaske Spencer before- outstanding actor & will definitely follow him up from now on. The scenery, costumes, music & most of all the story all came together to make a fabulous love story. I cried at their parting, I so wanted them to be together.
Emily is right in saying we don’t need history rammed down our throats but knowledge is powerful & needs to be shared.
A story of love & revenge, circles within circles. Of how one life touches another, how one action can have a ripple effect that can last for years & touch many lives.
Their love story is epic, their strength depended on their weakness. Just wow

Absolutely loved this mini series. Brilliant acting, great story telling, no unnecessary fowl language, sex or nudity. A completely compelling watch full of twists and turns. More of this please and thank you ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Simply one of the best series I’ve ever seen on par with the most effecting films. The script had a Cormac McCarthy pace and feel; costumes were lived in(surprising that so many filmmakers get this wrong)…acting was so spot on to the themes and character and direction, exquisite.
The costumes are amazing. Well done Phoebe De Gaye. The cinemaphotography! You could take a still, whenever the sky is the backdrop, and it's like a painting.
Just the most exquisite show I have ever seen. Eli and Cornelia's heartbreak is so pure it's distilled beauty. Chaske Spencer is on his way to the top. Acting talent, charisma, looks and that golden syrup voice. He'll make it big...it's in the stars...

This short series was exciting yet very touching. The story and cinematography sit among the best you'll ever see and the onscreen chemistry between Chaske and Emily was beautiful to watch unfold. I'm not big on Westerns, but this show transcends the genre. WATCH IT !!!
Brilliant show in every aspect, writing, acting, cinematography, music. Intelligent, touching, layered story. Poetic and delicate as incredibly cruel. Not to everyone's taste, but it is wonderful miniseries. These are years of great shows, and this one is one of the best. ❤👍
Just awesome! I watched it in one day. As an aspiring film composer I fell in love with the theme music and the whole score. I even learned the main riff on my guitar.

It was an amazing series, one of the best Amazon has ever done. It was also great to use Native American actors in all those roles. All that have done wonderful work in other Native American films. I noticed that some of the music did remind me of Spaghetti Westerns. The script writing reminded me very much of the best Western series ever, Deadwood. The cinematography was wonderful. I was disappointed to find out that this was filmed in Spain, it was beautiful though. Being a person who has spent much time on the plains of Kansas, Nebraska & Wyoming, I think when it came to authenticity, as the series did with the Native American parts, this should have been filmed where it supposedly took place. You would have found equally beautiful sites. Chaske was riveting to watch & I really enjoyed seeing Gary Farmer, one of the best actors ever, (watch Smoke Signals & Powwow Highway) in this as well.
Must be a co-production, i hadn't realised. I binged it on BBC I-player.
Why be disappointed that it was filmed in Spain? They needed that authentic look and not much left of the old west in the US other than mountains that can be filmed but not much landscape of those times exists anymore. If there are it's flooded with tourism and noise. Clint Eastwood did his spaghetti westerns in Italy and Spain as well.

I am a late adopter of this show. For some reason I just kept putting it off. Finished it last night, reluctantly. So bittersweet. So exquisite. I wish they had won more of their noms, so deserving. And, the theme music is hauntingly similar to Yellowstone.

A masterpiece. Slow, plodding, and confusing at times. And dialogue that can't be heard on occasion. But in all, absolutely brilliant, beautiful, compelling, and heartbreaking. Extraordinary.

12:44 I can't even put into words how much I praise the purple outfit. On someone like blunt, it becomes a mix of sophisticated contradictions. Very well put together.
I can’t speak enough praise for the script quality, actors bringing their characters to life, and the feel that the film evokes. When I see that a film is to represent Native Americans and it is written and produced by EuroAmericans, I fear and wince at how the Native Americans are represented. This story and film is more truthful in the story and history it portrays. My family came to Oklahoma and Indian Territory long ago and the film was painfully true at showing how EuroAmerican colonization took land and culture from the Natives, decimated the bison and whites set the laws and rules for their benefit. The series is enthralling! See it.

"the first scar of civilization on a landscape that was previously untouched" Those landscapes were touched by those who had been there for millennia.
But . . .the "originals" probably didn't scar the landscape, right?
Indigenous peoples didnt't scar the landscape. They lived in harmony with nature, took only what they needed to survive.
Probably they meant 'untouched' as in unspoilt.

This is a wonderful series. Twice watching it and just bought the dvd. Some things, you just cannot watch enough times....this is one of those for me.

It’s so rare to get a epic romance where the relationship is based on everything BUT the physical. Their relationship feels heightened because of it I don’t know what it is. Maybe its just refreshing to see a different type of love story for a change.
This movie spoke to my soul. It continues to do so long, long after Episode 6's credits rolled.

I've been watching dramas for a long long time. This is a golden age and The English is right up there (along with Normal People) as amongst the best and quite possibly the best. I'll be onto my 4th viewing after watching this review.
