  • Although it was the new socket AM5 processors, like the 8600G and 8700G, that got the most attention so far this year, AMD also quietly released a couple of new AM4 chips, including the 5500GT. So what is it, and is one of these worth buying?

I bought a 5600G when it came out to run in a Truenas box, but only used the IGP to get it up and running. It was nice to be able to do basic setup without a discrete GPU. Then I’m running it headless, but I can always go back and plug it into a monitor to access the Bios or do diagnostics. I think it is good that AMD started putting a basic IGP in all of their 7000 series CPU’s like Intel for just that reason. These G/GT CPU’s are perfect for just a basic computer.

I can confirm that that the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X was a very worthwhile investment and upgrade from the Ryzen 5 1600X I had, on a budget. I am extremely happy with mine and I am on a B450M motherboard, making me currently limited to PCI-E 3.0, but that is fine as my RTX 2080 Super is PCI-E 3.0 anyway. Also, it seems I have hit the Silicon lottery, as my 5600X can overclock on an individual core basis to between 5.8-5.9GHz, using no more than 1.3 volts. Also running 16GB of G.Skill DDR4 RAM running its full 3600MHz CL17 with this processor now, vs when I had to run it at 3200MHz CL17 with the Ryzen 5 1600X, which itself was all core overclocked to 4.0GHz at 1.368 volts on the dot.

asuming you watch TV with your living room PC, keep that 5600g. if you disable cpu boost in energy saving plan (by setting max cpu speed to 99%) it is one of the most efficient recent CPUs. it will draw only like 10w watching netflix and alike. Also if you have a discrete GPU, you can still connect the TV to the mainboard HDMI. this way desktop mode (incl watching netflix) uses the iGPU, while your GPU is maximum idle only consuming like 5-10w. As soon as you launch games, your dGPU does still the computation, while the output still goes via your mainboard. windows even allows setting each application manually which GPU to use. feature is called hybrid graphics and receives much much tooo less attention for power savin.

I'd rather have integrated graphics as an option in case the graphics card ever failed in my PC, that way I'd still have a way to use the PC (even if not for gaming) without having to try and find a new one at really short notice (and being stung in price for the privilege).
Though to be honest, my PC doesn't need integrated graphics, it's got a 5950X and 3060Ti... :)

Can these Ryzen APUs be used as a seperarte encoder for streaming or recording with programs such as OBS?
I used to do this already with Intel CPUs with iGPUs. Mainly Intel UHD graphics. Before I gave my brother my Intel CPU cause his died. And I went for a AM4 Ryzen build rather a Xeon build which I've used before.

Started with a Marketplace X470 motherboard for 80$ and some new DDR4 ram with a marketplace Ryzen 3600X
Previously I was on a 6th Gen Intel and Nvidia1070
Later upgraded to a 200$ RX 5700XT and then a new on special Ryzen 5800X (I regret not splurging on the 5800X3D that way my platform would have been maxed out on CPU which would be good for years to come... then again I am never on the highest end GPU so... not the end of the world.

5600GT is few percent faster than 5600G, while 5600G and 5500GT are virtually the same. But under the hood, looks like AMD switched stepping level (B2 from B1) . No major difference for end consumer, except some boards that had problems with 5600G (B450 mostly) would now work fine. Other than that, you could expect 1080p low with some FSR for games released for PS4. With games that do not support FSR (like Elden ring) you could use Magpie/Blinue .

    • @jefferyG499
      @jefferyG499 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Stepping (not steeping, which means to brew tea or to surround) is the version of the CPU.
"Within the world of CPU microprocessor creation, there is a practice that tracks the many changes a microprocessor goes through. This process is called CPU stepping. In the briefest of explanations, CPU stepping is the tracking method for the many versions of iterations a microprocessor chip goes through."
Nearly all "V1" AMD CPUs are stepping of B0 or B1. If bugs are found or improvements are made, they come out with a B1, B2, etc.
So, comparing a B2 stepping of a B1 stepping of another CPU is nonsensical.

@@jefferyG499 You are correct about stepping, but it does not have to be exact same model of CPU. It could be same architecture, in this case Zen 3 , as they all use practically same cores but different number of them, different size of cache etc ...

I think fragmentation is starting to become a problem. This product does not make a lot of sense as you said, as well as the 5600X3D and later the 5700X3D. Just lower the price of already existing parts that fill that purpose, like the 5600G compared to the 5600GT or the 5800X3D compared to the other two. And if you really believe the platform that supersedes AM4 is worthy just bet for it for once (and make it cheaper to increase its appeal aswell).
I disagree on having more products on AM4 launching in 2024 being a good thing. For me, if they don't improve the price/performance ratio of what already exists, only make decisions harder for the unaware buyer, and do not bring anything new to the table.
AM4 is an awesome platform. It still rocks today. Just FFS, AMD, let it die with honor. Do not make it suffer for 10 years in an intensive care unit. It deserves better.
