- Fenders - are they just bits at the front and the back of your narrowboat - absolutely not. Shoddily made fenders just do not last. This video is a tribute to the highly skilled fender maker Phil English. No rubbish, just beautiful quality made fenders. He even makes the Barlow button which is now a totally unique rope fender.
These skills must never be lost - basic tools but fantastic handmade craftsmanship.
Phil is based in Glascote close to the Coventry Canal.

Phil English was one of the very best. Sadly he had to stop making and fitting fenders due to wear and tear on his joints.
Having once been a Rope Master Myself, I can truly appreciate the skill employed in these constructions. I take My Hat off to Craftsmen at this level.
Phil is highly skilled and very modest. His ropework has been and still is being used by major film makers. His workshop is stunning. Comment much appreciated.

Phil English is a master craftsman and a very modest and nice man. He has a very traditional rope shop in Glascote, Tamworth which is well worth a visit.

Mr. English could you please repost the side fender video you did on TH-cam. I want to make one for a friend. Your work is extraordinary, and I would love to be able to make side fenders and bow fenders I'm 70, retired, and I do paracord crafting to keep my mind sharp. Now, I wish to learn rope crafting. Those fenders look like an art form unto themselves.
We came across Phil on our travels a few years ago - highly skilled. The round button ( Barlow button ) is only made by Phil. Film studios also ask him to do ropework, currently he is doing some amazing work for Fox films.
I like the highly skilled way that he wacks everthing into place.

It is actually a skill. The rope fender ( tipcat ) is actually straight when made and he uses a wooden mallet to shape it to match the stern when on site . Most people just place them on the back and they do not look right.

We hope you succeed in making some wonderful fenders. Phil does ropework for many film studios throughout the world. He showed us one giant fender like piece of work which was about 6ft long and 4ft wide. This and quite a few other pieces were used in the Game of Thrones.

When there is a craftsman, such as Mr. English, I simply marvel at the beauty, and practicality of his work. I am so thankful that you shared this, for it brings back memories of craftsmen (and women) long past.

He does fantastic work. I particularly like the way he feels around BEFORE he wacks it into shape. How long do the rope fenders last and do you have any to protect the sides of the boat?
Good quality fenders can last for many years if looked after. Ideally remove over winter and treat with a creosote substitute in your colour of choice. You basically dip them into a container full and leave them hanging up in a dry place. We have 6 small rubber fenders fitted in a different way than the normal method, we had fender eyes built into the shell when it was being fabricated.
Our old traditional boat friends do not use side fenders, it seems to be only some of the newer boats that have them.
I say, protect your investment. Look after your boat and it will look after you!
As they're just held in place by friction on over-hand chains what stops the second and third one one just riding up over each other and the first one when the boat backs intro something?
Good question. Many boats have shackles connected below fenders which is wrong and causes a safety issue as they can not lift up if the boat fender hits the cill in the lock. When proper traditional fenders are fitted correctly ( ie rope ) the button always looks quite high but everything settles down in a few weeks and it is not as pronounced but just sits slightly higher than the tipcats. Because they bed in ( mould and shape together ) they do not lift up if you back into something BUT they will lift up if something is underneath. Simplicity is the key, less shackles and less chain make it neat and safe. Hope that makes a bit of sense.

Did'nt see him making them , just fitting them , would be good to see how they are made , they must cost a lot due the time and skill involved .
At the time we were involved with something unique which will be in a future Vlog and could not go and see him making them. The next best thing is this link. fendermaker.co.uk/blog. Not cheap but will last for years if they are looked after.
