What inconvenience of the permit? The permit is free. You just e-mail a bit of information and you get a 6 month free permit within three days with the combination for the gate locks. You also get information on the trail set up so that you know where you are in Bulldog Canyon (so you don't get lost and have to turn around a lot). I renew my permit every six months because I think that Bulldog Canyon is a great area to off road and stop in areas and have lunch. Also Bulldog Canyon is just minutes from where I live! The whole place is just like a big off road park. I agree with you about having to fight the gate locks. I guess they are hard to get at so no one can just come along and cut the locks off. But I think that it's worth it to be able to have such a pristine adventure and you are right; the trails are in great condition and not messed up. Any way....happy riding!

We came down FR10 from Bush Hwy and then took FR3554 back to Usery pass today. Was a lot of fun. The rubber-stamp of a permit was worth it. It was surprisingly empty for being Presidents' Day, I'd have expected more people out riding. Saw maybe a dozen vehicles from say 9am to 11am, most of those closer to 11. Only concerns, on FR3554 there are a lot of steeply-banked turns that look like they'd be fun at high speed but they're around blind corners. It would be very easy for an dirtbike or side-by-side to come head-on into oncoming traffic if one is trying to enjoy the banks to their extent.
I'm actually kind of glad for the permit, all but save one driver was polite, and once one got far enough in that the RVers couldn't keep going there was basically no trash. The free permit is just enough of a hoop to jump through that people stay away, so all the better to keep the place relatively clean and pristine.

I was out there today myself. I saw your comment while I was getting out to open the gate at Wolverine Pass. We must have just missed each other. I took my truck and didn't make it all the way to Beeline Hwy. Got stopped by the last steep hill. So I turned all the way back around. LOL

@@NewZonaRides Possibly. Admittedly this was the first time I'd been out to go offroading in some time, and the previous time was during a freak April snowstorm up in the high country, and the two vehicles we had we'd never been offroad in until now, so we were playing it pretty safe. I wouldn't blame you for not wanting to risk your new truck.
