I can't ever get over how this always ends with the descending glittering light from the piano. Like a final farewell to something you have cherished so much like a childhood home. Always to have the best memories kept but only that.. I think only Rach and Schumann have ever been able to manage this kind of evocative melancholy in fully developing a melody to a conclusive end.
I think it's quite interesting that Ms Serova is playing on an absolute gem of a viola, the wonderful and rare 1615 Amati! Yet to get the best sound from it it needs to be strung up with quite a mixture of strings - I think I spot Obligato, Pirazzi traditional green, and a Larsen on the A string. This is yet another example where you can't just whack a complete set of Dominants, Pirazzi Gold, or Warchal onto a (presumably) professionally set up viola! Very lovely playing Ms Serova! Always meeting your audiences high expectations! :)
Oh wow! You're one of the greatest violists I have ever heard! And it is amazing that this viola at only 16 inches and a bit sounds so wonderful. Do you still play this instrument?
