Good day!) I am a russian, close to orthodox. I think, separation has been by cause of rivalry between Rome and Byzantium. There were even funny cases when the Pope excommunicated the Byzantine Patriarch Photius from the church. And Photius was not at a loss, and excommunicated the Pope from the church. The reasons for mutual hostility are most likely money and geopolitical influence. The Catholic Church was more agile. And Byzantium, before disappearing, baptized, in its faith, the ancient russian princes.
