Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?»
«Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind:
In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind.»

"Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehn?
Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;
Meine Töchter führen den nächtlichen Reihn
Und wiegen und tanzen und singen dich ein."

Dem Vater grauset's, er reitet geschwind,

What a wonderful voice . . . we sometimes forget all the great ones of the past. For a basso, he had an amazing unwobbly voice, and a very sweet and light top. Lovely song as well - of course no one should ever set this poem again - Schubert's was perfection.

@@hansjancker5057 I'll bet it is! But it's so damm thrilling. When I first heard it, it was before the Internet and before automated translation-software, and I knew almost no German, so I didn't know what the words were about. But I listened to it so many times that I soon knew it well enough to sing it in the shower, without understanding it.
My other favorite is "Der späte Gast". Do you know that one? If not, brace yourself and then listen:
