    “But, hey, if the car starts, who cares”: this perfectly encompasses my situation. My ‘71 Super needs to be “hot wired” to start using some wires underneath the rear seat.

    Doesn't seem anyone has noticed that the car itself appears to be a '68 (the external fuel filler being one of the more obvious signs) yet the engine cover is from a '72. That dash has been clearly filled in, no grille around the speedo, no glove box at all! Here's more info than you wanted: yes, Ferdinand Porsche is credited with the design...but he nicked a lot of it from the Tatra T97, an earlier Czech car designed by Hans Ledwinka and, in fact, in 1961 VW settled with Tatra for 3,000,000 DM (about $1.3 million USD at that time, close to $11 million today or about £8,750,000).

      Its a 1969 - if the bumpers are correct it started life as a 1200 which was the base model back then - all other post 68 Beetles had the Europa bumpers.

    Perhaps not the best example of the marque I've had several and they were always known for a light easy gear change and pleasant steering. Good review otherwise as usual.

    Well done indeed. The only time I was ever in a Beetle was on vacation in Acapulco, Mexico. Could not get my 6'3" frame into be rear seat at all. The leg room in the front was beyond a joke. After that, I gave up any idea of ever having one. No point to a car I could not drive

    It feels slow because its not running on four cylinders, sounds like its running on three or even two, 1600's should fly !! also in a Beetle you should hardly hear the engine in the rear, this car needs sorting.

      I can officially confirm the exhaust needs attention and the manifold pre heat pipes are blowing on one side hence the noise.

  • @ianbrown9082
    @ianbrown9082 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've owned many a beetle and I can safely say that one needs a new exhaust, its blowing really badly and its probably sapping quite a bit of horsepower. Gear lever shouldn't be stiff, so it probably just needs a little TLC, some grease under the gear lever and some new gear linkage bushes plus an engine service would perk it up no end.

    Nice to see a beetle being reviewed ! As an owner and daily driver of a 1973 beetle I think there was a lot of interesting facts missed out especially about the air cooled flat four engine. There were a number of different engine sizes ranging from a 1200 to 1600, including a 1300 and 1500. Some engines were single port or duel port and that well know beetle puttering churpy sound is actually created by the design of the tail pipes. The air cooling comes from a fan which is mounted on and powered by the generator. There are also 6v and 12v variants depending on the age of the car.

    It shouldn’t be that noisy and the gear shift should be nice and smooth. Owned a S2 minor for 30 years kept in pristine condition and loved it but I now have a beautiful 65 beetle also in pristine condition. Both cars drive differently but I got to say I prefer the beetle, just.

    Great vid, very entertaining. Little info nugget for you. Production didn't end as such in 1939, it changed to militarized versions of the beetle for the armed forces. Some were basically 4x4 versions of the car, others were a boxy open top version called the Kubelwagen, and there was a fascinating amphibious version called the Scwimmwagen. I would love an early beetle but they aren't cheap as you say!

    Takes me back to learning to drive in 1966 and passing my test in Barking, East London, in one. The earlier ones in the UK slid around all over the place at the back if you drove them like young people did in those days, and some had no fuel gauge, just a switch on the floor to change to reserve tank - try finding it and moving it with your foot at 60 mph when the engine started to splutter; and the fuel filler was under the bonnet at the front. Once the bonnet jammed on a drive from London to Scotland and only force and a screwdriver got it open. Reliability wasn't legendary either, but they were fun (or maybe life was just more fun generally at 17 years of age in 1967!)

    Didn’t like my short driving experience with this car back in the 70s. I only drove it around 3 miles lol. I was low in the seat ( as you were ) peddles were weird lol and the back end of the car was cutting the corners to close to the curb for my liking. I would have got use to it over time, but it was only a borrowed car. . I had a similar steering problem with the Austin 11000/1300. Off center steering wheel and back end running to close to the curb on corners 🤷‍♂️

    Volkswagen = "People's Car" in German. The rear engined Beetle was forced out of production not through lack of sales but rather because it couldn't meet modern safety design rules etc. The later front engine New Beetle was actually a VW Golf with a Beetle styled body shape.

    Hey, loving your channel, now that I've found it. Here's a curious fact about the VW Beetle car. I point this out as I notice there was no space wheel in the front, which would leave you with no windscreen washer, and a fair few flies stuck to the glass. Apparently, this function was powered with pneumatic pressure, taken form the spare wheel - or so I've heard - which would often leave you with a flat spare by the time you got a puncture. Hey ho!!

  • @discerningmind

    We all have to thank the British for the Beetle. After the war, Volkswagen was up for grabs. The American auto manufacturer's had gone over to look at the Beetle and felt it was worthless. However, the British saw possibility and got the plant up and running again. From that point the Beetle made history as we know it.

    The air-cooled VW Beetle has probably the best parts supply worldwide for a classic car. There is a thriving "cottage industry" in California building replacement parts for these cars including the early 1200cc powered ones. Here in Australia we have the popular Formula Vee single seater racing cars that uses 1200cc for the Historical class and the 1600cc for the New Generation class.

    This is a standard Beetle - you know from the flat windscreen. The enlarged 1302/1303 had a curved windscreen, MacPherson strut front suspension, disc brakes and a padded dashboard. Originally championed by Adolf Hitler, these were produced between 1938 and 2003 and sold more than 21,500,000 units! I wouldn't think these are rare at all, but they have such a cult following that the prices are crazy. I like them, but lower the price please!

    I taught my ex-wife to drive in a Beetle. Very forgiving it was pulling away from lights etc. As a learner she never gave it much gas to pull away and yet that little car chugged away merrily from little to no revs. She passed first time too using the same car. Pedals feel weird at first because they come out the floor as opposed to hanging down. Engine was a doddle to remove, Two 17mm Nuts Two Bolts Pull back drop down. Voila! They have their foibles like most old cars nonetheless a classic great motor. 5* Video

  • @rx6180
    @rx6180 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Agreed. Many classic cars are not worth the mark-up. I’ve owned a few before the prices started getting really silly and now I won’t pay the asking prices. I love the style of cars that were around when I was a kid and couldn’t drive them (which is a VERY long time ago) but bottom line is, when I’ve bought an old classic they haven’t driven and run as well as they did when they were current, and the experience has not been all that pleasurable. And I’ve had decent looking ones as well, not rotten ones with moth eaten interiors. So in my view now, old classic cars are past their Best Before date. And if they are past their Best Before date, I’m not paying inflated money for them that would easily buy me a three year old, one owner, low mileage modern car. I’ve spent 18 years finding that out.

    Beauty of older cars is you can learn all about mechanics and save heaps by doing the work your self. This young man is smart he will regret ever moving to a modern car, so expensive to maintain what you save on petrol you lose big time in deprecation and repairs. Mexico has just stopped making the Beetle. It takes 15 minutes to take out the engine. Which makes it easy to service the spark plugs.

    The biggest problem is one you sort of hit on: aerodynamics. This car was designed before they were really well understood and although they were something of a concern in development they really only had basic theory of it and the result is a car that punches through the air rather than glides through it. So, it tends to feel sluggish on the open road despite its being able to hit 80mph. Also, being designed for maximum interior volume for the footprint and rear engine layout means it has a high roof and cowl to go along with it. So, it's no bullet or a greenhouse. But, for those that don't mind such short comings,,,,,not my favorite. lol

    Gear change and steering is way better on a Minor, as is handling and fuel economy, and practicality, especially the traveller. And the Minor has smaller outside dimensions and more room inside than a VW. VW's have a lighter clutch than the Minor.

      Oh! and the Minor ALWAYS have a working heater, the VW rarely so.

    Thanks so much for the video Steph, you have done an amazing job as always. You might have found the handling different because it doesn't have stock wheels/ steering wheels so would agree with the other comments about driving others but the love of them is you can adapt them to your own taste. Well done 👏

    Another super review Steph, thank you. And well done Ian on his restoration of the Beetle. Must say I agree with you Steph, the asking price for some classic cars is quite silly, to be polite.

    "Which" Magazine slagged the beetle off in the 60's and didn't like the pedals !

      I can appreciate that. I think it’s one of those things it’s an acquired taste. I didn’t really like it but I reckon there would be loads who would!
