Yes, and there was a riot in East Berlin between cops and the kids, because the cops were trying to keep them away from the wall and from hearing the song (and the rest of the concert, which was part of a larger outdoor rock festival that was happening).

I am 77yo and listen to this song a lot. It holds deep meaning for me, reminding me that I can be a hero, even if only for one day. And we can all be heroes. Be a hero for one day at a time.
This song is such a great example of polyrhythm in rock/pop music. Every instrument is playing a different simple rhythm, and the whole is greater than the sum of all its parts.
I love it when Jamal says "did this guy do any modeling?" Jamal my brother if you only knew the half of it. He was one of the most influential artists of the 20th and the 21st centuries. He acted in so many movie's, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Labyrinth (of course), I loved his cameo in the first Zoolander move( had me rolling on the floor), and he was so perfectly cast as Tesla in Christopher Nolen's the Prestige. He was an artist in every sense of the word.
He also played the lead character in the play The Elephant Man without the layers of make up, just his physicality and got Dave reviews. He was amazing in the film Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence a WW2 prisoner of war film.

Of all the incredibly good Bowie tunes from across his career, "Heroes" is my favorite. There are many more, before and after this, that are also amazing but "Heroes" just has something about it for me. I've had the lp since it came out. I love the contributions of Robert Fripp on guitars and Brian Eno on synths etc. Those three musicians, Bowie, Fripp and Eno, influenced my tastes from then on.
One of the most memorable performances of this song was the one he did at Madison Square Garden not long after 9/11. The whole audience was First Responders and their families. Their loses were still very fresh, and they needed to blow off some steam. Bowie was sitting on the floor of an empty stage playing a harmonium. It was as minimalist as you can get, and maybe because of that it was incredibly powerful. He was singing to a huge crowd of real heroes, and their reactions were priceless!
The day David passed away I listened to this song and I wept like I knew him. I don't remember who said it but they said it was like a whole color had gone out of the world. I felt that. So glad you are experiencing one of my all-time favorites. I hope you do Fashion or Blue Jean....or any of them really. A rare talent.

My brother had texted me the news and it was the first thing I read upon waking. Like you, I wept. Just a few years earlier I mentioned to my husband that the deaths of Lou Reed and David Bowie would hit me hard. They did. There are certain artists that just reach into your soul and stay there. I'm so grateful we have their music and that we can witness people enjoying it for the first time ❤️
Someone also said something to the effect that 'imagine all the millions and millions of years of the earth's history, and you managed to exist here at the same time as David Bowie'. That did bring me some comfort in days after he passed when I felt completely destroyed.
I barely remember a time where I didn't know Bowie's work, even before I knew his name or what he looked like. When I learned who he was and of all his work as an 80s teenager, I was in awe. When I learned he'd died, the shock of it felt as if I'd had the wind knocked out of me.
I am a grown man and I have wept to this song in the hard times of my life. When loved ones passed, when I didn't know myself, when love turned cold and blew away. The thing about the title and topic of this tune is that heroes aren't real. Heroes live in myths. We're all just people and the world is a cruel and harsh shade of grey a lot of the time for many people. Good people do evil deeds constantly and this world can feel a relentless beating at times. And yet life and joy and connection can grow through thick stones in the middle of a desert storm, and the hopeless romantics within us can live in the memories and moments of love and joy, where the shame is always on the other side of the wall and you can authentically be you, chained to circumstance but free in the mind, doomed to burn but with unshakeable hope and pride. It's naive and yet fierce. The world may destroy you, but you can scream back in it's face and claw your way to your rightful place. The song is also a desperate howl of refusal to surrender ones humanity in the face of an uncaring world of war and hate and oppression and sadness.
3 microphones were used in what is termed "multi-latch vocal gating". One was 9 inches away and the other two 20 and 50 feet respectively. The unused microphones were switched out as the song progressed forcing Bowie to sing even louder thus achieving the heart rending almost shouting vocal at the end into the microphone 50 feet away. Genius.
I remember hearing this song at the end of a movie in the 80's. It was about two junkies living in West Berlin. The movie was in German. I don't know for the life of me what it was now.
The most amazing fact about this song is that he had three mics when he was singing, one one foot away, one 20 and one 30 (i think, not sure about exact distances). The louder he got, the less the closer one would pic up. So in effect, he's screaming at the end of the song, and sounds so distant because the nearest mics are dropping out the louder he gets. It just fits the desperation of this song so perfectly.
Fun facts: 1: Robert Fripp, King Crimson's guitarrist, plays in this song, but in a very unique way. He recorded three guitar tracks for this song having just a vague idea of how the song would actually sound. So he recorded them, one of them alongside Brian Eno, who plays synths with Bowie on the album, hoping one of the tracks would fit in the song. But in the end, the producer, Tony Visconti, merged the three tracks into one single sound. And that's the angelical guitar sound you hear throughout the entire song. 2: When Bowie is screaming his guts out by the second half of the song, the reverb effect in his voice is not a effect. Tony Visconti set three mics, one in Bowie's face, one in the middle of the recording room and one by the edge of it. The two distant mics would only record depending on the frequency and volume of Bowie's voice. The distance created that roomy reverb sound.
Wanderson, I hate to be a pedant (I obviously don't!), but the 'gated' mics were triggered by volume (loudness), not frequency (pitch), which is why he had to sing louder and louder to get them to activate. And the other crazy genius thing about it was, when he got loud enough to activate the second mic, the first one would automatically switch off, so, as he got louder and louder, the active microphone got further and further away. By the time he's screaming that final verse, the only mic that was working was something like 50 feet away. But, yeah, Eno and Visconti were artistic geniuses. Eno was the mad scientist and Visconti was the engineer that made it all into reality. Those 3 Berlin albums are still my favorite Bowie era.

I said frequency because Bowie sings in a low register, even though he could pull off higher notes in lower volume. But it makes more sense now, since its volume relates with the song's dynamic. Hope I was a bit right about the guitar sound, at least.

This song just blows my mind every time. I still can't believe how the three different melodies play at the same time, are distinctly different, yet work together to create this perfect piece of art.
Losing David Bowie in January 2016, and then Prince in April 2016 broke my heart. It was a double whammy of loss. I remember my eldest sitting with me, both of us were scanning our phones. The news about Prince popped up. I threw my phone down, started crying and said first Bowie, now Prince, I can't handle this. I had to walk out to my front porch and calm my dramatic self down.
This song is widely recognized and acknowledged as Bowie's single greatest and most significant work, arising during a time in his career as he was experiencing uncertainty, upheaval in his personal and private life and working in unfamiliar surroundings and circumstances to push himself into another breakthrough in his already legendary and unique career. I've been a lifelong Bowie fan and had the privilege and pleasure of experiencing his live shows more than 25 times (I've lost track, honestly) and this song, with few exceptions was always a part of his show. It always raised a knot of emotion and a tingle of sheer elation in me while hearing him pour his heart and soul into it. I NEVER get tired of hearing it. He is an astonishingly intense, sincere and remarkable talented artist, one of the GOAT! This is one of those songs that you find something new to admire every time you hear it. Lyrics and singing usually come first, then you hear the guitar track, then the drumming and then you start picking out the subtle changes and how it builds to the end, giving you a real uplifting high, without you really understanding why. Truly one of the great tracks in music. Now unleashed on a new generation via "The Perks of being a Wallflower" movie.
I started listening to Bowie in the 1970s when I lived in L.A. I have always admired him and his music. He was such a genius! I was very sad when he passed away in Jan. of 2016. Thank you for keeping his music alive, he has a very wonderful music catalog.
When they put the vocals on this song Tony Visconti had Bowie in a large open room with multiple microphones at different distances from him. The microphones were "gated" so that as Bowie sang louder as the song progressed the closer microphones would shut down and only the distant ones would be recording. By the end of the song Bowie was singing as loud as he could at a microphone on the other side of the room. I think it's a really great effect.
Great song, groove, arrangement, just the whole sonic atmosphere. Everything just meshes so beautifully. The ache and longing in Bowie's vocal. This song is used to great effect at the end of the film, "Jojo Rabbit." Germany surrenders, and Jojo and the Jewish girl his mother had been sheltering leave the house, and dance in the street/. One of the truly greatest uplifting songs ever. He was taking a recording break outside near the Berlin Wall. He saw Tony Visconti and his lover being intimate with East Berlin guard towers very near. It’s all about love and hope conquering hatred. Bowie was the freaking MAN!
Also, you should do the Bing Crosby/David Bowie duet of "Little Drummer Boy." Seriously, it's nuts. And he didn't model, but he did act in a couple dozen movies.
The line about “standing by the wall” is a reference to his producer Tone Visconti stealing a kiss underneath the Berlin Wall, where David Bowie spotted them. They were in Berlin cutting this album when they were spotted and put it in the song.
He was struggling with the lyrics, and when Visconti walked back into the studio, Bowie was grinning like the cat who ate the canary. He then exclaimed “We’ve got our lyrics!”.

When Bowie did his vocals they set up about 5 microphones at 10 feet distances away from him the furthest away being 50 feet. So some mikes were only activated when he got louder, that's why the sound on his vocals changes throughout the song.

Growing up in Germany after the fall of the wall this song was almost like a anthem for a generation and a call to gather a new one, means a lot to us.
There are a handful of songs that have the ability to tear me apart yet leave me more complete and whole once they are over. This is one of them. I see my life playing like a reel in my mind every time I listen to it, it destroys me as I think of the one's I have cherished yet lost as time has passed. then I'm hit with overwhelming joy as I realize how lucky and blessed I am to live and to have these cherished memories and experiences. It moves me to my damn soul every time.

They were living together in Berlin at the time But, yeah, Iggy's is a great version, and of course its the original recording of the song. With their co-writing for the albums, I believe Iggy mostly wrote the lyrics and Bowie did the music.
The collaboration between Bowie and Brian Eno for this and the previous album Low was incredible. Two men whose musical ideas really enhanced one another.
The different colored eyes was apparently an optical illusion. He had anisocoria - a condition where the pupils are different sized . This gives the illusion of different colors as one pupil is enlarged, but the eyes were actually the same color - although I agree they certainly look different colors to me.
Heros was made in Germany while the Berlin Wall was still in existence. Bowie wanted a big change after living in LA. They were recording but Bowie was still working on the song. During a break, one of the studio musicians met his girlfriend by the wall, Bowie could see them embracing through the window. Amazing what a talented artist can do with situations that appear in every day life! Oh, he also began a collaborative friendship with Brian Eno which is why the style is so different. Producer Tony Visconti set up the microphones for the recording of Heroes in such a way that, as the song progressed, Bowie’s vocal would become more distant, hence the urgency in his voice as the song progressed. Sonically, the goal was to match the song’s key line, “Nothing will keep us together.” Now that’s artistry!
I understand about Lazarus being difficult to watch. I postponed watching it after David died. I knew it would affect me deeply. I still couldn't wrap my head around the idea of his departure. I wasn't ready to accept it.
You hit on one of the things that makes this song so powerful - forbidden love. To answer your question, Bowie was never a model per se, but he did use his face as a canvas and his education in mime gave him an agility to perform as many characters. In the Seventies, album covers carried much more importance than they do now, and his LP covers were often striking and controversial (See The Man Who Sold The World, Aladdin Sane, and Diamond Dogs). This is my favorite David Bowie song, hands down ("Blackstar" is #2). Everything about this song - the relentless drive of his incredible backing band of that era, Eno's swirling synth textures and sonic treatments, Fripp's incredible sustaining guitar feedback sounds, Tony Visconti's masterful engineering and production, and Bowie's absolutely incredible vocal and lyrics. The sound and singing just grabs you and never lets go. It's an incredible moment of collaboration and creation. Cheers!

When Bowie died, a little piece of me died. He was a beacon of strength for people that were a little different and maybe felt things too deeply.

He acted in so many movie's, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Labyrinth (of course), I loved his cameo in the first Zoolander move( had me rolling on the floor), and he was so perfectly cast as Tesla in Christopher Nolen's the Prestige. Of all the incredibly good Bowie tunes from across his career, "Heroes" is my favorite. There are many more, before and after this, that are also amazing but "Heroes" just has something about it for me. I've had the lp since it came out.
I love the contributions of Robert Fripp on guitars and Brian Eno on synths etc. Those three musicians, Bowie, Fripp and Eno, influenced my tastes from then on.

One of the most memorable performances of this song was the one he did at Madison Square Garden not long after 9/11. The whole audience was First Responders and their families. Their loses were still very fresh, and they needed to blow off some steam. Bowie was sitting on the floor of an empty stage playing a harmonium. It was as minimalist as you can get, and maybe because of that it was incredibly powerful. He was singing to a huge crowd of real heroes, and their reactions were priceless!
The day David passed away I listened to this song and I wept like I knew him. I don't remember who said it but they said it was like a whole color had gone out of the world. I felt that. So glad you are experiencing one of my all-time favorites. I hope you do Fashion or Blue Jean....or any of them really. A rare talent.

I barely remember a time where I didn't know Bowie's work, even before I knew his name or what he looked like. When I learned who he was and of all his work as an 80s teenager, I was in awe. When I learned he'd died, the shock of it felt as if I'd had the wind knocked out of me.
I am a grown man and I have wept to this song in the hard times of my life. When loved ones passed, when I didn't know myself, when love turned cold and blew away. The thing about the title and topic of this tune is that heroes aren't real. Heroes live in myths. We're all just people and the world is a cruel and harsh shade of grey a lot of the time for many people. Good people do evil deeds constantly and this world can feel a relentless beating at times. And yet life and joy and connection can grow through thick stones in the middle of a desert storm, and the hopeless romantics within us can live in the memories and moments of love and joy, where the shame is always on the other side of the wall and you can authentically be you, chained to circumstance but free in the mind, doomed to burn but with unshakeable hope and pride. It's naive and yet fierce. The world may destroy you, but you can scream back in it's face and claw your way to your rightful place. The song is also a desperate howl of refusal to surrender ones humanity in the face of an uncaring world of war and hate and oppression and sadness.

3 microphones were used in what is termed "multi-latch vocal gating". One was 9 inches away and the other two 20 and 50 feet respectively. The unused microphones were switched out as the song progressed forcing Bowie to sing even louder thus achieving the heart rending almost shouting vocal at the end into the microphone 50 feet away.

The most amazing fact about this song is that he had three mics when he was singing, one one foot away, one 20 and one 30 (i think, not sure about exact distances). The louder he got, the less the closer one would pic up. So in effect, he's screaming at the end of the song, and sounds so distant because the nearest mics are dropping out the louder he gets. It just fits the desperation of this song so perfectly.

Fun facts:
1: Robert Fripp, King Crimson's guitarrist, plays in this song, but in a very unique way. He recorded three guitar tracks for this song having just a vague idea of how the song would actually sound. So he recorded them, one of them alongside Brian Eno, who plays synths with Bowie on the album, hoping one of the tracks would fit in the song. But in the end, the producer, Tony Visconti, merged the three tracks into one single sound. And that's the angelical guitar sound you hear throughout the entire song.
2: When Bowie is screaming his guts out by the second half of the song, the reverb effect in his voice is not a effect. Tony Visconti set three mics, one in Bowie's face, one in the middle of the recording room and one by the edge of it. The two distant mics would only record depending on the frequency and volume of Bowie's voice. The distance created that roomy reverb sound.
Wanderson, I hate to be a pedant (I obviously don't!), but the 'gated' mics were triggered by volume (loudness), not frequency (pitch), which is why he had to sing louder and louder to get them to activate. And the other crazy genius thing about it was, when he got loud enough to activate the second mic, the first one would automatically switch off, so, as he got louder and louder, the active microphone got further and further away. By the time he's screaming that final verse, the only mic that was working was something like 50 feet away. But, yeah, Eno and Visconti were artistic geniuses. Eno was the mad scientist and Visconti was the engineer that made it all into reality. Those 3 Berlin albums are still my favorite Bowie era.

I said frequency because Bowie sings in a low register, even though he could pull off higher notes in lower volume. But it makes more sense now, since its volume relates with the song's dynamic. Losing David Bowie in January 2016, and then Prince in April 2016 broke my heart. It was a double whammy of loss. I remember my eldest sitting with me, both of us were scanning our phones. The news about Prince popped up. I threw my phone down, started crying and said first Bowie, now Prince, I can't handle this. I had to walk out to my front porch and calm my dramatic self down.

He is an astonishingly intense, sincere and remarkable talented artist, one of the GOAT! When they put the vocals on this song Tony Visconti had Bowie in a large open room with multiple microphones at different distances from him. The microphones were "gated" so that as Bowie sang louder as the song progressed the closer microphones would shut down and only the distant ones would be recording. By the end of the song Bowie was singing as loud as he could at a microphone on the other side of the room. I think it's a really great effect.

The line about “standing by the wall” is a reference to his producer Tone Visconti stealing a kiss underneath the Berlin Wall, where David Bowie spotted them. They were in Berlin cutting this album when they were spotted and put it in the song.
He was struggling with the lyrics, and when Visconti walked back into the studio, Bowie was grinning like the cat who ate the canary. He then exclaimed “We’ve got our lyrics!”.

When Bowie did his vocals they set up about 5 microphones at 10 feet distances away from him the furthest away being 50 feet. So some mikes were only activated when he got louder, that's why the sound on his vocals changes throughout the song.

They were living together in Berlin at the time But, yeah, Iggy's is a great version, and of course its the original recording of the song. The different colored eyes was apparently an optical illusion. He had anisocoria - a condition where the pupils are different sized

Heros was made in Germany while the Berlin Wall was still in existence. Bowie wanted a big change after living in LA. They were recording but Bowie was still working on the song. During a break, one of the studio musicians met his girlfriend by the wall, Bowie could see them embracing through the window. Amazing what a talented artist can do with situations that appear in every day life! Oh, he also began a collaborative friendship with Brian Eno which is why the style is so different. He continued to grow and change throughout his life. I truly enjoy your program! 😽

Producer Tony Visconti set up the microphones for the recording of Heroes in such a way that, as the song progressed, Bowie’s vocal would become more distant, hence the urgency in his voice as the song progressed. Sonically, the goal was to match the song’s key line, “Nothing will keep us together.” Now that’s artistry!

I understand about Lazarus being difficult to watch. I postponed watching it after David died. I knew it would affect me deeply. I still couldn't wrap my head around the idea of his departure. I wasn't ready to accept it.

You hit on one of the things that makes this song so powerful - forbidden love. To answer your question, Bowie was never a model per se, but he did use his face as a canvas and his education in mime gave him an agility to perform as many characters. In the Seventies, album covers carried much more importance than they do now, and his LP covers were often striking and controversial (See The Man Who Sold The World, Aladdin Sane, and Diamond Dogs). This is my favorite David Bowie song, hands down ("Blackstar" is #2). Everything about this song - the relentless drive of his incredible backing band of that era, Eno's swirling synth textures and sonic treatments, Fripp's incredible sustaining guitar feedback sounds, Tony Visconti's masterful engineering and production, and Bowie's absolutely incredible vocal and lyrics. The sound and singing just grabs you and never lets go. It's an incredible moment of collaboration and creation. Cheers!
