It took me a good while to gather the images I wanted in my printed portfolio. It was the first time I put them in a printed book, also from Saal Digital. I learned so much about my work, how it all fitted together. Did I nail it? Probably not. Done is better than perfect. Saal did a fab job printing my book, in fact, I just looked through it again. Seeing the gaps in your portfolio is also a massive plus from this exercise, I don't think you can have too many action shots of people working around and enjoying food. Hope the resto shoot went well. Thanks for all the great content. Cheers, JT
This is great timing for me! I have made different portfolio's especially as a designer, but I've been into photography for some time. And I needed a new way of presenting my genre of photography. "Taking things out and giving the best images" - applies to design as well. Focusing on what you are into. Your video is a great reminder. Your portfolio is so delicious and beautiful! 24 images of your best in your book - what a collection!
Your work is lovely and the colors are just off the charts. I'm just in the middle of selling home so you are inspiration for once I get out of this current place back into the light. Thank you as always you bring joy to my Thursday morning I'm new to your group and really in enjoy your voice of truth.
Your channel is the first one I am subscribing to :) Your videos are truly addictive! Well done and inspiring. Thank you so much for keeping my photography flame alive!
Awesome video Joanie! I know I have suggested it before, but I would love you you would dig into the topic of making more lifestyle oriented food industry images, so maybe I get lucky on this one sooner or later 😊 Happy Easter to you!
Another awesome video Joanie! Thank you so much for all the great info you provide! It’s helped me so much 💗your work is so inspiring and really makes me want to continue to learn and grow!
What a great and clean photo book. I wish I knew this when I created my book. It’s a’lil over 100 pages and it has everything. From landscapes, portraits, Street, fashion weddings, food and what ever is left. But they are all in their category. 😂
Thank you so much this is right on time I am a student who will graduate may 14 2019 I want to do commerical photography N I am currently working on my portfolio right now thank you so much I love your channel n you motivate me to continue to shoot food photography
Thank you! It's something to have to bring with you to the meetings, but you keep it with you. Some people do create leave-behinds, smaller paperback versions to leave with a prospective client.
What a gorgeous portfolio you have, Joanie. Just stunning. I'm wondering how often you use a printed portfolio as it's such a big expense. I'm grappling with how to justify it, especially since a year from now I may want to change the images.
Jackelin Slack definitely depends on the kind of work you’re doing and types of clients your courting. If you’re focusing on ad agencies and magazines, this is a very helpful tool. If you’re focusing more on digital content, it may not be as great a return on investment.
It all depends on the particular client. But, for a magazine, it helps to show that your images print nicely. But, certainly, that's not to say you can't have success with an iPad, too.
Your printed portfolio looks beautiful!! You mentioned dividing different genres into separate portfolios... Do you think it's ok to have all those different ones on the same website or do you think it's important to have separate sites?
Very nicely done video with good, easy to understand information. Do you leave a copy with an add agency and others or do you always show it and then leave with your portfolio? Do you always have it with you ready to show or only for scheduled discussions with a potential clients? Cheers and thank you for sharing!
If you want to have a leave-behind, those are usually smaller paper back photo books or cards, something with an even smaller collection of your best shots.I would only have it with me if I were at a trade show / photo festival where I might meet potential clients. Otherwise, it's more intended for use with specifically scheduled appointments and portfolio reviews.
Those books do look nice, went to the site and tried to download the software but I get a 403 forbidden, same with the online ordering from your link. If I go to the main site they work. Curious how many arms and legs I have to sacrifice to get a book shipped to Canada. (Edit) Nevermind..... no option to ship to Canada lol. Well your work looked really great in those books Joanie!
Great video!! Thanks for the tips.... I just bought that reference book, looks really interesting.... One question! The prints look amazing in the book. You mentioned it was from their professional collection, but was there a particular paper stock you used for your book? Or any other specifics on the print would be really helpful.... Thank you in advance! Cheers..
Yep! I just added the details in the description box on the two different books so you can use that for specific reference. I went with the standard glossy finish on the pages on both the 8x8 and the 12x12, but you could choose matte if you prefer. The books are a part of their professional collection and are the leather bound with acrylic.
Oh Joanie, your new studio is so big and gorgeous but I so miss this delightful, comfy kitchen counter chat you used to share. Today, seems from your production values, you may have still hung on to your early dream of being a news anchor.
Sure thing! They're both from the professional collection and they both have the standard glossy finish on the images..you could choose matte if you prefer. The 8x8 was black leather with acrylic and the 12x12 is white leather with acrylic. Cheers!
@@darkworms321 I think it will vary for different folks. For me, my work has improved drastically each year for the past few years based on the frequency that I'm shooting and evolving my style. But, I think it's worth reevaluating once a year to every two years, depending. But, certainly, if you take a stunner photo next week and you just did your portfolio and you think it would be a great addition to the collection, by all means, add it. The definite bonus with the digital version is it can be changing more frequently.
@@TheBiteShot same here, I tried Safari, Chrome and youtube App. Maybe it's because of the country? I'm in Mexico but this has never happened before with your channel
I just got an email from saal for a 50% "discount". I'm working on a Photobook America book now. Their software sucks. I had to make a photoshop template from trial and error to get it to fit the software. Just because I have had so much trouble formatting it, I wouldn't want to use it again.
There's something so satisfying about looking at our photos in print - and, come on, what a beautiful portfolio!

So so true! And glad you had a good experience with Saal, too! Here's to all the action shots! Getting some more today at the shoot

Beautiful shots.
Is that book a one time version to show on business meetings, or do you give one away (have multiple copies) to big prospects.
Thank you! It's something to have to bring with you to the meetings, but you keep it with you. Some people do create leave-behinds, smaller paperback versions to leave with a prospective client.

Absolutely love your portfolio my question is that a lay flat book? If so it has quite a crease in it? What's the deal with that.
Would you be able to talk about types or tropes of food photography? I'm really curious about how to shoot for different purposes/clients :)
Very informative and a visual treat... as a matter of interest, why do you prefer hard copies rather than, say, an iPad?
It all depends on the particular client. But, for a magazine, it helps to show that your images print nicely. But, certainly, that's not to say you can't have success with an iPad, too.

Hi , wanted to ask if it's necessary to join a photography school to become a food photographer?
Please reply!

How often should i change the printed portfolio?
when you change your digital portfolio you also change the printed one?

This is so funny cuz I’d seen the saal digital photo book in someone’s instagram today or yesterday haha and wanted to get one of these hahah 😂😂
There are two things you have to do after seeing Joanie Simon's portfolio. 1) go eat. 2) hire her.
Awwww
Step 1: Get a REAL full frame camera not a crop sensor
Step 2: Go take some stunning photos
I have some props to send you from london xxx
