I hope you know that videos you posted 3 years ago are still helping people. This video is amazing. I can't tell you how many times I have said "Nah, I can't do a paid gig. I'm too new, too inexperienced, too whatever...". You're so right. You have to just go for it. Thank you Joanie!
I so appreciate you being kind to your beginner self. I've watched these kinds of videos and thought, "wow that looks like what I do now" and feel crappy when they make fun of it or rip it to shreds. Thank you for being kind.
I absolutely adore your understanding that everyone starts somewhere, I can really see that you have nourished and honed your skills with care to grow organically like a little tomato plant.
I have JUST started my business this week and this was SO needed. I do headshots and portraiture and it is TERRIFYING to feel like you don't know everything yet still are handing out contracts and charging booking fees and being official! Your video had me cracking up in places because man... do I know those feelings! I had been holding back for so long, thinking I needed to know way more than I knew... my first two headshot clients actually got me onto the recommended photographer list for the top acting agency in town. I literally cried when I got that news because the voices in my head, man... it was validation, and so is this video. I have a TON to learn, but had to trust that I actually know enough because at the end of the day, when people see my images, they're delighted. Me? Still shocked to know people can be delighted with what I do. Ha ha ha! Thank you for the great video and the wonderful encouragement to those of us out here just putting on the wings.
I'm so amazed how I've just stop by on your channel because of a TH-cam recommendation and you've just said exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and encouragement!
Joanie I am impressed by your honesty and openness. And props to your 2015 self for having the guts to take that leap. A great lesson for folks who are just now finding their way.
I am a person who just love taking photos of foods and the table with dishes, and this video is so touching and I am so grateful for you to cheering people (including me) up. I have not thought about being a pro even though I own quite decent gears because I have been thinking 'being a pro' needs to be something more special and outstanding in the start-line. Your video gives me hope! Thank you :)
Great information, thank you! I've done a few paid gigs knowing nothing.I'm now assisting a pro photographer who had a production company for 27 years and learning a TON every shoot. Lighting is one of my responsibilities on shoots and I have no background or real understanding about lighting other than natural light. I learn more every time we go on a shoot. We're doing a big project shooting environmental portraits ... so much FUN and a lot of work. I'm so happy to have found you!
I love the tone of your content / your self talk / encouraging spirit. I'm learning to be more kind to myself. Thanks for your time and energy making great content like this.
Joanie - I can't begin to tell you how much you've helped me!! I recently lost my job due to Covid and because of a small technicality, I wasn't able to get unemployment, so I've been scrambling like you can't imagine as I'm just trying to figure out how to pay my bills now!! Straight up scary - I'm all by myself with absolutely no other income to help. This seems like something I think I can do without a huge amount of drama, so I'm sure trying to make this happen. I have shot as 2nd shooter for numerous weddings, and I've done a fair amount of marketing & advertising photography, but I've always worked for someone else... partly because I know that my greatest weakness is the business side of it all - thus, the reason I was always more than happy to let someone else be in charge and handle all the business part of it. Now I'm at a point where literally just paying the bills is where it's at for me so I'm learning real quickly that I desperately need to learn the business side so I can hopefully make something happen here for myself. Obviously, not having any money for training, I'm having to really depend on the training I can find online for "free"... so THANK YOU for putting this channel together and for giving so much of yourself to help others (you're literally helping me keep my apartment and my vehicle at the moment - basically, just my life in general, no extras). Thank you so much - I simply cannot tell you how much this channel and these videos have meant to me and how much they've helped!!
I really appreciate and admire your honesty about your own work and learning experience. Too many artists want to tear into each other during a critique because at some point in their own career it happened to them and it was called a critique. The fact is critiquing is also an art form and not done properly it can stunt an artist growth.
You’re amazing. This was really reassuring. I’ve been feeling like I’m not super knowledgeable/seasoned enough to charge. So I’ve been doing a lot of free work..but I feel like I should branch out. Thank youuu!
You took a paid job while still shooting in auto and without knowing what an f stop was or even knowing that you could change lenses? Damn, that is insane
As soon as Donald Trump got elected it really put on perspective that confidence is way more important than actual skills in pretty much everything. I mean it was 2015, 3 years ago since she started and now she as a youtube channel and Free e-book and stuff ... Dont get me wrong but ... you know ...
That it is: insane. But that's a major (not only) reason why the photography business has become a race to the bottom. Stand out, learn the craft, be different, teach others.
Going to a job interview tomorrow for a social media job that also requires to take photos of food, and I'm so glad I got to watch your videos. Thank you for being so encouraging!
Joanie, you are a true inspiration for beginners and people who intend to persue this as a profession. Love the way you cover each topic and don't make people feel lonely or embarrassed for not knowing what they don't know. You are absolutely "The Best". Thank you for taking timing to cover such important topics and the other food photography related content. Your images rock!
Hey Joanie ! I'm from New Caledonia and I have my first paid food photography gig on Monday ( like first ever ) and Oh my it's scares the hell out of me ! But I've been watching your videos and following you on TH-cam and I have to say it's helping me A LOT !! It's so great !!! Thanks for this channel it's perfect for photographer especially the super shy and non confident ones haha
I applaud you for sharing your story, especially your ability and courage in being vulnerable because that takes a lot. I’ve been sober 15 years, I can relate to your story and wish you many more sober years ahead 💜
Awesome! Literally did a gig for free for our friend's wedding, loved taking photo's all day (I think it was 10 hours) and both me and my partner where like... HELL yeah, we are doing this again! and getting paid! (next time). SO we have another potential client lined up, we just need to go to a meeting, so this IS PERFECT CONTENT. Now I know WHAT we will need to pull together when we to the first meeting with the wedding couple... So excited!! Thanks for the extra boost of confidence! Much love from NZ
OMG as if this is for ME!!!! .. I started my food photography journey recently and I like my work .. you know what , I was planning to wait 6-12 months to practice more and have more pics in my instagram profile THEN I can start charging !! how ridiculous! and I know enough about photography already I know I do ! I mean 1- I shoot manual 2- I shoot raw since day 1 3- I have a good eye (that needed to be opened thank you) and seeing how you started I was like GURRL! what are you waiting for!! .. honestly your video inspired me to add that " for business inquiries please contact..." to my bio .. truly grateful for your video thank you SO much xoxo
Thanks for being transparent and showing the success you had despite errors you now identify. Your critique definitely has generated a personal checklist for me when planning a shoot. Thank you for the references to resources.
Wow! You shoot on auto and on a kit lens! That's brave!! I really needed to hear that that as I am doing photoshoots for free to build my portfolio and you are right I shouldn't. I really needed to hear that! Thank you!
Thank you so much for being such a nice and warm mentor. I got so much energy and hope from this video. I can't thank you enough, I am at the same stage as you are talking about and will love to know more. best of luck for you.
There are a lot of photography folks out there, some insanely goofy, some condescending, and others just plain boring. You are approachable, down to earth, friendly, informative, and your production quality is top notch. Love this video!
I'm at a crossroads in my life, I love photography and getting paid is certainly something I'd like to try. When I see images produced by people like you, James Popsys, Adam Kappa and others I follow it makes me think paid photography is way outta my league. And yet (with respect) I know more than you did at your first gig, which has given me a confidence boost to go further. Thank you.
This was great to hear. I'm getting back into hobbyist photography after many years away and the number of photogs (and wannabe photogs) who expect that "EVERYTHING BE DONE THIS WAY OR YOU'RE NOT A REAL PHOTOGRAPHER!" has grown exponentially!
"You don't know what you don't know" is literally what I've been telling myself since I started wedding planning 😂😂 THANK YOU for such an informative video, and for gifting us your personality!! I really, really appreciate that you don't disown your beginning pictures. Every other photographer I've watched talks badly about their beginning photos and their beginner selves. Thank you for showing yourself some mercy- it's all the more encouraging to us. ❤️
Love love this and of course you! You talked about all the things you DIDN’T have when going on-site. Bounce cards, diffusers, backdrops, etc., and I’d LOVE IT if you’ve done or could do a video describing your travel kit? Thank you 🙏
I just celebrated my one year anniversary of my first paid shoot (150 bucks to shoot a university pops orchestras coffee mugs they were selling). I can tell you the greatest teacher is doing. It feels good now to do a shoot on something I’ve already done and learned from.
One thing that would sure be huge for some of us is to know what strategies you took in working toward getting your first couple years' of bookings... I have absolutely no idea where to start (the business side of it all is my absolute weakness) - including the designing of a postcard or something to put out there to the various restaurants that gave them an idea of what you could do and what you offered. If you could go through some of that, it would sure be hugely helpful!!
Thanks so much for all this great information. Trying to decide if this path is right for me and your videos are great at providing real world info. Really helps me get a feel for what I would need to consider. Can't wait to watch some more of your videos and check out some of your resources.
Try Pixieset, been using them for 5+ years. When I started I used Zenfolio - but it is not client friendly. The galleries from Pixiset are gorgeous and easy to download/share.
I'm just starting out and this has REALLY helped me. I took my first paid gig THIS year..and had no idea what RAW was either. I was upfront and still hired. I've booked 3 weddings spring of 2019...and the information I've learned has been mind blowing. Each shoot gets better!
Thank you so much for sharing this video! You have inspired me to start exploring food photography! My first shoot is this week and I'll certainly be keeping your learning experiences in mind. Your channel is amazing! Thank you thank you for producing this content!
Thank you for this video. This is the stage that I’m at right now in my photography. This weekend I will be taking photos this weekend for a friends event and i am super nervous! But your words have encouraged me to not be scared and just stay focused on what I’m set out to do. Thanks again!😊
What I most liked about this video is she saying that she got a job while she was at the stage of now knowing some of the foundations, like f-stop or lenses or even the difference between compressed and uncompressed files. Yeah, she did have the artistic view and the composition was not a problem here (albeit a few corrections she mentioned she could have made). And yeah, most of the time the technical stuff is overwhelmed by the artistic creativity. But what I'm trying to say is: Just go for it. We learn loads of stuff, we can do exams on apertures... yet we are here, just learning and not producing anything. This video is a great example
Hi, i know this video is 2 years ago but it seems like you are talking to me right now. All the things you said in this video iwas all my dilemma this past months. From pricing, to my portfolios and my skills. I wizh i could have watched you earlier but again thank you. Your videos are still relevant and so helpful to aspiring photographer like me. 🙂
I can't believe I came across your video like now & I needed this so much. My friend hired me to be her photographer for her upcoming engagement in a few days time. And I am indeed excited & terrified at the same time cuz this will be my first paid shoot. I'm using a nikon D3400 DSLR with a standard kit & I feel less confident because usually you will need a better camera body etc. Also I feel like there's a lot of things that I'm still at lost with but I still want to do my best for my friend & her fiance to take great shots of them. I love you! You are really so inspiring! Thank you so much for the encouragement! I feel less scared now thanks to you! ❤️❤️❤️
Really nice job providing useful info for those of us still riding with training wheels! Thanks so much for taking the time to share what you've learned.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m just starting out. I’m growing a self started production company, I have invested a very worrisome amount of money into this dream, and I’m in the process of building a portfolio. I’m scared out of my mind that I’m finally taking this leap. I have been watching tutorial and training videos nonstop for a month now, and this is the first video that has been super positive and reassuring that everyone has to face this fear. You have earned a subscriber and a fan here.
I cannot even begin to explain to you how this helped me! I have been scouted to be in a Worldwide Art show at the end of November, here in Houston. I am terrified, excited, and stressed on level 10. I have been offered little shoots here and there and I was not even close to being ready for that but when I was asked about this one I jumped right in bc waiting is only prolonging the anxiety of getting the first "gig" over with. I wasn't sure if I was doing the right thing and you literally just put all my fears at ease! THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!!! THANK YOU!!!!
I am starting and using an A6000 with a 35mm and had to smile when you said that. I just did my first paid shoot today. I appreciate your videos. Thank you for your encouragement and honest tips. We ALL always have something to learn!
thank you so much for making this video and sharing what you didn't know when you first started. I will do my first paid photoshoot today and I'm so glad I found this video and watched it because it honestly really boosts my confidence! just like you, I didn't know my rates and I almost reject the offer last week but my friends encouraged me to take it and so I did! and then this video is a big help to make me realize that it's okay to not know everything because you just started!
Thank you so much for the words of encouragement at the end. I’ve been doing food photography as a hobby for 2 years now and was offered my first paid gig for a restaurant today. I’m exactly in that stage where I’m getting nervous and second guessing myself. Even though there is still a lot to learn I feel so much more informed and confident taking the offer.
I'm more into portrait and landscape photography but this video really made me feel like I could relate. I came from a Nikon entry level D3400 and it was an amazing camera but the wife decided to surprise me with a Sony Ar7iii which is hands down...WOW. My point, you hit a lot of topics where I know I was thinking one way and my camera decided to shoot another. I come from an IT background but I feel with any career path, you never know it all, you're always learning. I think thats what hit home with me the most, Ive subscribed and not because Im interested in shooting food, personally, I am more a taste tester but I love you ideas and how you relate. I look forward to watching more of your videos to give me the inspiration I need to do what I do. Side note, I'm still anticipating that first paid gig. Not that Im not trying, Im honing my skills more but I think you may have pushed me into the direction of...lets give it a go and Ill do my best and learn from it. Thank you!
Thank you! I just started doing paid photography and was a bit nervous about pricing and if I was doing things incorrectly or correctly. Gave me some hope!!
I'm shooting my first paid gig for a small restaurant tomorrow after years of being a hobbyist, and I am nervous! But also excited and happy for the chance. Watched this video weeks ago and re-watching it now to calm my nerves haha. :D Thank you for all the tips and inspiration you share on your channel!
Thank you so much Joanie! You're such an inspiration! I quit my corporate job in October, moved to a new city and jumped both feet into photography full time. It's scary and exciting and I believe in myself and my work. Videos like this just further that feeling.
I am not really a food photographer, but you provided some great tips! It is also awesome that you showed you can still provide quality photos and get a paying gig with a basic DSLR and a kit lens.
You are literally that one amazing food stylist and photographer I feel I can look up to as a role model!! As a newbie your videos really give me alot of perspective to things that I really didn't about!! Thank you God for you and your amazing channel!! Sending you loads of love from India ❤️
You are amazing, I LOVE ALL YOUR TIPS, but mostly, YOUR GREAT ENERGY! Keep it up! I'm starting my new journey, I have decided to transition from a graphic designer to a Food Photographer and you (with maybe 2-3 other) TH-camrs, are my "Jedis". MUCHAS GRACIAS AMIGA!
Thanks so much for this! Would love to see a followup to this where you show the old pic then one similar to it that shows how you would do the same composition now.
Try looking into pic-time for delivering!! That’s what we use for our wedding photography/videography business stuff. It’s a great way to deliver to clients and has a very nice, minimal layout to it. It’s great 👍🏼
Thank you so much for this video! Seriously so helpful. I'm currently in that stage you described as having those voices in my head that are keeping me on the fence about valuing my work more and starting to charge for my photography. This video definitely gave me a push in the right direction and I greatly appreciate it! :)
I'm watching and have subscribed because I'm in that same situation but with social media in general. I started a food focused social media management company, and I just got my first two clients. For one of them, I suggested doing Buzzfeed Tasty style cooking videos. The first one just came out, and it's fine, but I want to improve it. They also gave feedback that they wanted the photos to look more elegant, and they're looking for a different style than I'm used to (dark sharp food photography as opposed to bright gauzy photography). Your channel came up in my search for tips, and I've already learned a lot in just a couple of hours. Thanks! But yes, I'm at that very scared moment where I think I can do it, but that Imposter Syndrome creeps in. Going all out on impressing these clients. If I get one or two more, I can do this full time.
kit lens, average camera , and not knowing many things yet you got a gig and you think you were lucky...no you weren’t ..what cut it for you is something else that you didn’t mention..you are incredibly adorable and i’m sure character goes a looooong way...i’m not into food photography at all (found your channel in my search for how to focus while tethered, didn’t find what i was looking for) BUT...i followed you and watched almost seven videos cause basically watching your videos makes me happy :) there you have it...luck has nothing to do with your success it’s your adorable personality, taste, artistry and now of course photography mastery
Holy cow! That “name the file raw” thing had me in stitches! Thank you so much for sharing that, I have done similar things (and still do) but feel so dorky for asking. I am not alone in this crazy food photo biz, haha. It can be so isolating at times. You’re the best, glad I found your channel XOXO
I have a DSLR that I use to make videos, but today a friend called me and asked me to take some product shots for a company she's starting. I said I don't normally do still photography but that I'd give it a whirl. She gave me a nice bonus for the 3 hours of work we did. So when I had the camera and lights all set up I snapped a photo of our "studio setup" on Instagram and now ANOTHER friend asked me to take product shots for her new line she's starting. And so now I'm like... I guess this is becoming a thing, and I might as well just go with it. So I'm looking for advice on product shots and found your channel and I really appreciate what you shared here. And I love your hair. So, thanks so much!
I am watching this video intently as I am preparing for my first (Sorta paid) gig this Sunday. I am shooting a volleyball game and selling the bulk images to the players. Im not sure how I would sort all the pictures quickly enough so I could just sell the pictures to the players directly and not just give the bulk bunch, so if you have any theories I would LOVE to know. I am actually a videographer by trade. So working with cameras is a usual thing for me. But I have not done much photography, and honestly, no action at all. I have a few lenses I can use... 16mm 1.4 sigma 50mm 1.7 (Old manual pentax lens) and a 135mm Kaliman 2.8 (old manual lens). Those unfortunately are my fastest lenses I have... I am using a Sony A6000, and a Sony A6300. Slower lenses I have are of course the kit lense 18-55 3.5-5.6 both in sony and Canon, and a zoom lens 70-300 Canon lens. So as you can see my selection kinda stinks for volleyball and action in a low light gymnasium. If you have any advice I would love your opinion! Its my big step into marketing my video/photography business (I love doing dramatic headshots and portraiture) and I'm praying that being there will get my name out there a bit more. I'll take any advice you got THANKS!
Very candid, honest, and encouraging content! Wonderful tips... Truly appreciate your channel and thanks so much for all of the helpful links, I'm diving in right now. Be well, stay encouraged, and an Encourager!
I'm a wedding and portrait photographer and would love more info on how to get into food and product photography and the business side behind it. Loved this video!
Love that you showed this and even more impressed that you talked about how and what you've done to get better. We seem to be so into point and shoot and click a preset these days that to see someone actually make the effort to become better technically is fantastic!
Thank You So Much for makong this video @TheBiteShot, but my concern is i shot with my phone is there any hope or way i can get paid for projects ! plz poure some light in this ! ❣🌝
The majority of my clients are using my images online so I deliver in sRGB. But, as a part of the survey process beforehand I find out where the images are going so for the ones going into magazines, they've all been good with AdobeRGB. So far, no CMYK requests, but I'm sure at some point...
I hope you know that videos you posted 3 years ago are still helping people. This video is amazing. I can't tell you how many times I have said "Nah, I can't do a paid gig. I'm too new, too inexperienced, too whatever...". You're so right. You have to just go for it. Thank you Joanie!

Thank you for being kind.
I'm astounded with the progress you've made in three years. Dang! You give me hope.
Hustle 📸

My first wedding photo gig I used the kit lens on my SL2. Don't despise your small beginnings :-)

HI, Your videos are so much fun to watch and learn. They are so so crisp, coming straight from the heart.
Simple awesome and full of Life.
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've been battling with the "voices" in my head about my first paid gig and You've just helped me shut them down!
I came for the tips, I stayed for the incredible host. Your personality is fan-tas-tic on camera. An absolute delight to listen to. Awesome!
I remember my first photoshoot one year ago,I was sweating. Lol
you are so real and rare. Thank you ♥️

Hi Joanie! Have you shared a video on file naming and organizing? I'd LOVE to see it. thanks for sharing!!
Awesome! Loved it! It has given me some more confidence. Thank you so much and lots of love 💛
Loved hearing your insight. Thanks for taking the time to make the video!
I love this! I'm just starting on my for-pay gigs, and I feel like you are speaking to where I am at curently. thank you so much, subscribed!
Man you're awesome
What a video! Thank for honesty, thanks for pushing forward. Big thumbs up for what you’re doing!👍👍👍🙏
I’m actually starting to build a portfolio with my own cocktails, and your videos have opened my eyes so much!
Tomorrow is my first Paid work, and I can't sleep. This comforts me so much. Thank you Joanie!
Alejandra García (
I needed to hear those kind words about not beating myself up and valuing my work, thank you so MUCH for this video
So many great points - especially about taking assignments when you aren't 100% sure of your skills - which is still my #1 obstacle!
My first paid GIG: Nikon D3200, 18-55mm kit lens and 50mm lens. Thank you a lot for sharing your experience.
This is something that I have wanted to do for some time now. Hopefully, I will make it come to pass. Thanks for the inspiration.
I like how she makes her points focus on ALL TYPES of photographers. Clever!
Your videos are spectacular, along with your portfolio. Thank you for sharing your experiences for free. Very helpful.
Congrats!! I am so excited for you 🤗🤗🤗 keep rocking it ❤️
Thank you so much for sharing this video! You have inspired me to start exploring food photography! My first shoot is this week and I'll certainly be keeping your learning experiences in mind. Your channel is amazing! Thank you thank you for producing this content!
The folder "raw", that was cute.
Oh my! I love you! So much honesty and passion!
Thank you for this video. This is the stage that I’m at right now in my photography. This weekend I will be taking photos this weekend for a friends event and i am super nervous! But your words have encouraged me to not be scared and just stay focused on what I’m set out to do. Thanks again!😊
You got this! Go get 'em and have fun!
The most useful and motivationel video about photography that I've ever seen on youtube! Keep up the good work! Thank you!
Rock it out!
If you wait until you’re ready, it will never happen ❤️ full speed ahead!!!
You've got this!!! Go get 'em!!
Cheers for the inspiration 💯
I am starting and using an A6000 with a 35mm and had to smile when you said that. I just did my first paid shoot today. I appreciate your videos. Thank you for your encouragement and honest tips. We ALL always have something to learn!
Congrats to you!!!
thank you so much for making this video and sharing what you didn't know when you first started.
Go get em!! 🤗🤗
Wow. What a fascinating insight on how you got started. Thank you for the inspiration to just go and do it.
You've got this! Rock it out
The Bite Shot
Thank you so much Joanie! You're such an inspiration! I quit my corporate job in October, moved to a new city and jumped both feet into photography full time. It's scary and exciting and I believe in myself and my work. Videos like this just further that feeling.
So awesome!! Go get 'em!!!!
Sending you loads of love from India ❤️
me too
You are amazing, I LOVE ALL YOUR TIPS, but mostly, YOUR GREAT ENERGY! Keep it up! I'm starting my new journey, I have decided to transition from a graphic designer to a Food Photographer and you (with maybe 2-3 other) TH-camrs, are my "Jedis". MUCHAS GRACIAS AMIGA!
sorry I posted this 3-4 times, hoping you would read it
The experience you shared in the first few minutes are very precious, thanks
Thank you so much. Love your enthusiasm and energy. You motivated me to get into my hobby
It’s great 👍🏼
OMG! Watching this was so motivating because I'm exactly in that beginning phase. And I also just bought a second hand Sony a6000!!!
It's amazing to hear u started with Sony a6000 kit lens!thats what I work with too! Only upgraded to a 50mm lens recently
I feel like you are my eldest photo-sister that teaches me how to do things right! Warm hugs and Good Luck to you and your channel!!!!
Thank you so much for this video! Seriously so helpful. I'm currently in that stage you described as having those voices in my head that are keeping me on the fence about valuing my work more and starting to charge for my photography. This video definitely gave me a push in the right direction and I greatly appreciate it! :)
Jump in!! You got this!
I cannot thank you enough for sharing your newbie experiences. It makes me feel better!
You are so great!! 😂👌🙏 Thanks so much for the motivation and for all the tips!! Awesome 😘💕
Thank you so much for your videos they're very educational and inspiring at the same time. You're a godsend.
So awesome! Rock it out!
You inspire me so much! Keep em' videos coming. I love the entire work and the whole you.
So have you run into the "I need photos with a CMYK profile and not RGB" issue yet? And what profile do you normally deliver in, RGB or CMYK?
The majority of my clients are using my images online so I deliver in sRGB. But, as a part of the survey process beforehand I find out where the images are going so for the ones going into magazines, they've all been good with AdobeRGB. So far, no CMYK requests, but I'm sure at some point...
