It used to be a very underrated album ... I adored this CD more and more over the years. It is now one of my favorites. The only time I had a chance to hear them live was on this tour. I managed to get the Triple LP reissue a few months ago and the Remastering is fabulous. There are even re fresh mixes on some tracks ... for example "blue milk" lasts 17mins 🙃 I hope this album grows on you, it is quite an experience. Also “Sound Dust” and “Margerine Eclipse” are impeccable works, I hope you take the time to enjoy them. I have the last two álbumes too, of which I stand out more for “not music" but maybe they are only widely appreciated by fans. See ya!
One of my top Stereolab albums! I have to disagree with you about Blips Drips and Strips. The one is a particular highlight of the album for me, I think there are other songs on the album that would take the title filler track more so than that one. Happy to see someone taking the time to talk about this beautiful piece of art though :) Cheers
After this reaction of yours, I rate this album much higher than back in the days of its release, when I found it profoundly weaker than "Dots and Loops". I guess in this album, they brought everything together: their experimental, bubbly Kraut-angle from back in the days mixed with the jazzy Lounge Pop vibe, they captured best with the predecessor.
4:29 Yes, its in the context of _their_ retro influences which happened to catch on in the nineties (in some part due to them). You can't just react to stereolab without a lot of context
Greatest Stereolab album EVER. I hadn't heard of them until this album and I worked my way backwards. This and Dots and Loops are my fav, and the other albums have great tracks but not full albums. But in regards to this album, the best tracks are The Free Design and Puncture in the Radox. The horns are strings take me to another planet. Now the album you listened to are teh extended versions and not the OG tracks. So they could get kinda longwinded if you havnet enjoyed the original songs. These track will grow on you and get better and batter. ENJOY!
This album is an absolute masterpiece, which unfortunately took a lot of pig-ignorant flack from the tone deaf gatekeepers of cool who ruled the roost at the time of its release. Shock! Horror! How dare our favourite cute little indie band come up with something so musically sophisticated, etc. The internet has its bad points, but it’s been wonderful at doing away with these musically ignorant little caesars, who basically laid down the law and dictated to people what was good and what was not. And killed many careers in the process. It’s wonderful to hear younger, unprejudiced, and musically literate people revisiting some of these amazing works of art, particularly here on TH-cam, which has become the home of intelligent music appreciation. And I love many of the young bands putting out great music today (Snarky Puppy, King Gizzard and the Wizard Lizard, Black Midi, etc.). A fair first time listen. Cobra… gets better and better with repeat listening. Cheers.
Like the chill nature of your reactions as well as the decision to react to one of my favorite band's discography. So when are we getting hip hop and electronic reactions? 👀
John McEntire of Tortoise produced this record as well. That's why there is that sonic continuity with Dots and Loops that you noted. Jim O'Rourke's presence is noted in the more Beach Boys elements that sneak in.
That’s awesome. In my opinion, after dots and loops is when stereolab really starts picking up in quality and interesting sounds. I would love to hear your opinions on their other albums and maybe see your reactions in the future.
i have to disagree with you on the “two-in-one” thing. i personally think caleidoscopic gaze does sound like the ending is tacked on, but i think the transition is what sells it. love the clavinet sounding instrument at around the 2 minute mark. i think blue milk is the most cohesive long track (seeing as it’s like one note, one chord the entire thing) and the emergency kisses is just so beautiful i don’t even mind. Italian Shoes Continuum was originally two tracks, but tim really wanted Continuum on the album so he frankensteined them together.
@@AlexHaitz hell yeah sound-dust is one of my favs and despite what everyone else says The First Of The Microbe Hunters (2000), Margerine Eclipse, Fab Four Suture, Chemical Chords, and Not Music (Chemical Chords outtakes) are all fantastic. but i’m biased. i have nearly 7,000 scrobbles for them
You haven't mentioned anything about the increasing complexity of the interplay of Laetitia and Mary,s vocals... Getting away from the "la la laa's of the past-- More " syllabic complexity, largely at the behest of Mary Hansen, her contribution..
I've been a fan of Stereolab since like two years ago, yet it wasn't until a week ago that I listened to this extremely underrated masterwork.

A misunderstood masterpiece that takes you on an intricate journey. MASTERPIECE

blue milk is 17 minutes on the remaster, it’s original length that was shortened for releases after the original 1999 lp pressing

The Emergecy kisses is one of their most beautiful songs

I think it was Stereolab's last one with Sean O'Hagan on production, with his High Llamas-esque sound.

We’ve got Boards of Canada and Kraftwerk on the reaction schedule!
@@AlexHaitz
Boards of Canada is in my top 10!
It's like you're catering to me!
I reminded of Nico s evening of light when I hear blue milk.

This is for me one of their greatest albums
Glad you finally mentioned L and M's vocals not incongruous with the music, I M O..
Are you going to check out sound dust anytime in the future?
I’d like to do some more albums in the future. My album list keeps getting longer so it may be a while.

will sound-dust and everything after be something to look out for?
In the future, yea!
