I love how David was the man. Quarterback, great with the ladies, good dancer, good grades, confident, mature. That's what makes the bullying all that much worse. He was better than all of them put together.

I admire the way David handled his prejudiced peers; he would have literally destroyed them if anyone came out in the rain. He came across very strong and believed in himself! I loved when he yelled "Cowards" That was one of my favorite parts in the movie.

Yes, they all really went too far, by making that swastika sign, ordering him home. Totally crossed the line. Ten to one, if any of them had the courage to go out and meet him behind that one dorm(where he said to meet him), they all would have been “the sorriest people on this planet, by far.” He truly had had quite enough of this uncalled for, unfair Antisemitism.

I know it's just a movie but what got me the most was the swastika. The movie's setting was too close to World War 2 for that kind of shit. If I was a 50's teen I most certainly would have known relatives and friends of relatives that fought and died in WW2, seeing a swastika would have pissed me off and I'm not even Jewish. That's me bitching about the movies writing, not the characters.

Poor David. You can tell just what his “friends-turned-enemies” are thinking right after he posts the note on the wall: “What did he just write?” Then, when they look out their dorm windows and see that he really means business-“Do you suppose he really means this?” “Looks like it, but he can stand out there in the pouring rain until kingdom come until he’s drenched and get DOUBLE PNEUMONIA, for all I care!” “Yes, he REALLY had a lot of nerve, lying to us!”(as he never told them that he was Jewish.) And Chris:”Look, will you kindly cut him some slack, for Pete’s sake? It’s not as if he ASKED to be Jewish, much less! He deserves to be treated as an equal just as much as the rest of us! And furthermore, above all, I’m SURE he’s proud as can be about his faith, deep down where it really counts!”

David is great @ :30, all like, “You want faster? I’LL give you FASTER, McGoo!” and with that strides up to him and assaults him. At least Rip is kind enough to trade tables with him, as he can see how upset and fired up David is at Collins”McGoo’s” and Dillon’s cracks about his faith. Hey, we all have that breaking or snapping point, when we’re pushed too far and can’t take it anymore and we really need to get away from the source of our grief(which it’s plain is just what David is doing, avoiding Collins and Charlie as best he can while serving at the table.)

I can’t help but wonder if it was by choice that Brendan Fraser didn’t become a big star soon after this film (I mean like Affleck or DiCaprio); his acting talent and physicality were stellar in the early 1990s. Remember Encino Man? Same timeframe as School Ties, a silly film which was hardly as critically-acclaimed, but Fraser’s comedic character was nothing whatsoever like his portrayal in School Ties - the hallmark of a great actor. Some of his roles upwards of a decade later were not in wide-releasing films or even that good (bad scripts?). Something just didn’t work which really should have.
