Why I Stopped Trying to "Science" My Way to Success in Fitness

  • I used to get caught up in trying to “optimize“ things like my rate of burning fat, hormones, muscle, protein, synthesis, and a whole host of other characteristics that I tried to hack through overcomplicated diet exercise strategies.
I thought these strategies were worthwhile at the time, but looking back at recognize they were tedious and held very little influence over my success. Yes, they were scientifically legitimate, and did have some effect, but it wasn’t worthwhile and I no longer seek out ways to try to hack Mother Nature.
Reclaiming my attention away from the trivial strategies and so-called hacks that give birth to fat diets and workout programs has not only allowed me to focus on what most important, to get better results, it has also significantly reduced the amount of stress on my mind, body, and lifestyle.

It's about being reasonable and consistent and not dogmatic. Good video.

Nurse here. I've been able to maintain a healthy body weight for the past 40 years through a balanced diet and lifting. I kinda sorta got caught up in the carnivore diet this year. Let me tell you my results! I successfully gained 20 lbs of body fat and gave myself high cholesterol! I'm back to what works for me ( lean proteins and low fat dairy, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans). I've lost 15 lbs in 3 months. I have no idea what I was thinking other than I got caught up in the carnivore "science". Also, every time I eat a bowl of oatmeal, my bank account cries happy tears. Carnivore is expensive.

Clean and sensibile guidance, thank you. There was a business book called, "Dont sweat the small stuff." This video reminds me of that.

Just yesterday had long chat _(veered _*_away_*_ from discussion)_ with a fellow who was what I call absolutist.
Potatoes are poison, sweet potatoes are near magical, dairy is terrible and on and on.
What I've lived by? scientifically? junk food is junk, convenience food is usually junk, too much of anything is just wrong-headed, eat plenty of the good stuff 🙂
Ultimately, *_don't let perfection become an obstacle to the good!_*
    cheers
p.s. I'm pains-takingly precise when it comes to radio communications and recording equipment!

You can't take the I out of fitness.
People lose sight of key drivers of success - do you enjoy it? does it fit your routine etc.
Start there and the purpose of the science is to optimize.

Sprinting(SIT) is even better than HIT for burning fat in a timely manner. Adding one or two sprints to your workout, whether on a treadmill or a stationary bike/elliptical, could be all you need to burn off a few extra calories. It amounts to results over time. You just gotta stay consistent. There is also evidence it helps to build muscle systemically, meaning you get bigger biceps(to an extent) from sprinting alone.
So there is value to "hacks" but you still gotta be consistent and put in the effort, as with anything else. I think that's the most important point to preach - consistency. Also safety and doing things that you enjoy so that you can stay consistent.

Sprinting is HIIT. it’s jut a different level on the same sort of training.

@@RedDeltaProject It's different due to the _intensity,_ and that's why the results are _significantly_ different. 'Runrepeat' has got a terrific article on it that goes through much scientific research, called: _"Sprint Interval Training: Burn 40% More Fat Than HIIT in 60% Less Time"_
And that's a good hack. It's not for everyone, but it's a good hack for some.

I think there are built in assumptions every time you do an experiment, especially in physiology and exercise science. These assumptions are there because humans have limited perception of reality. We cannot know the one, perfect way to do anything. So our assumptions keep us from going crazy.

20 or 30 calories a day adds up.
In a hundred days that's 2-3000 calories. A days worth. In a year it's a calorie deficit that equals 2 or 3 pounds. Or like fasting for three days. In ten years it's 20-30lbs. Like fasting for a full month. This could be all the weight loss one requires. Granted you probably wish to lose weight faster then this.
Point being that small changes lead to good results over time, and you don't have to do more than that. You don't have to do very much at all. Cut out all processed junk food. Also cut out carbs in general and prioritize protein and you got your diet covered. Do a full body workout once a week - a single set per exercise to failure should be enough - and you will pretty much transform your body in two years.

Telling people that want to lose weight that they should avoid carbs is bad advice. Processed carbs, yes, but potatoes, whole grains, Sweet potatoes, Legumes and fruit has been proven to help with weightloss, increasing performance in the gym, keeping muscle mass and decreasing chance of cardiovascular disease.

@@jonatanolsen37 No, that's really bad science. But whatever, you do you. It's not like an apple is likely to kill you.
Reducing carbs obviously helps with weight loss since carbs is a macro nutrient that provides the body with energy/calories, and yet they are without any nutritional value.
They are inessential and at odds with our very tightly regulated blood sugar levels, meaning that if you eat a bunch of sugar the body has to squeeze out insulin to force glucose into the cell so that you don't die. You can only have like a tea spoon of sugar in your blood stream at any time. A few grams. Any more or less than that and you die on the spot, and you will never have less because a(healthy) liver is excellent at providing you with the glucose that you need. Your body won't let levels drop too low.
Unlike fats which are essential to us, and there's practically no roof for how much lipids you can hold in your blood stream at any time. Proteins are also essential and also have a thermic effect meaning they're great for weight loss.
There is also research showing that it's easier to lose weight cutting sugar and carbs then if you cut fat. But whatever works for you, if you require carbs on a daily basis then go for it. I'd avoid the fruits though, and most grains, and keep to rice, roots or tubers.

Sure it add up but slowly. The problem is when we put too much attention or value on such small influences. I can collect cans on the side of the road because “it all adds up” but Im certain all not going to do that because I’ve got far more effective ways to influence my weight that im going to put my attention on as you mentioned in the later part of your comment.
