One of the best of the Bond movie themes. Clearly inspired by the Goldfinger theme, it’s a great song on its own and Gladys sings it brilliantly.
It's right up there with Goldfinger and If anyone could match Shirley Bassey's version of Goldfinger I think it would be Gladys Knight.
This lady can sing! She is IMO one of the all time best female singers in all forms of music, hands down.
I totally agree. I have loved her from the late 60's. I was a 7 yr old kid when I first heard her and the Pips. Been in love with her voice, music every since. She's the #1 in my book.

Absolutely outstanding song by an absolutely outstanding vocal artist. Gladys Knight in my opinion has not been credited enough in her career so far as one of the best female artists in the music world. She should be up there with Aretha Franklin, Billie Halliday, just to name a couple of the many.

Wow I can hardly believe she stood there and sang that as amazing as she did, sounds exactly like the recording, I love the soul in her expressions too.........this is awesome!!
Actually, the reason she sounds exactly like the recording is that Gladys was lip-synching. But the fact that it's so convincing is testament to her remarkable talent and professionalism. Other singers couldn't be bothered to study their own recorded performances and sync them so perfectly. Gladys is the total package: great artist and consummate pro.

@@hbnederland123UandMe Yes, she may have been lip-syncing here but let me tell you that I saw a live video from where she was much older, and that one wasn't lip-synced. It was just as good as the recorded version. I think, we can cut the singers that can actually back it up with a good live version some slack when they can sound like the recording if they do it themselves. There are others who can't.

This is superb. Spine-tingling, in fact. And although Goldfinger is my favourite Bond theme, this is a VERY close second. AND, Timothy Dalton is severely underrated as Bond.
same #1 and #2 -- the main horn riff in these songs exemplifies the flavor of bond perfectly. and both have incredibly bombastic female vocals to go with them. goldfinger is the classic/original example, of course, but i honestly have more fun belting along to knight's tune, myself~

Yes, Gladys is all of that. She is the only top artist who always went to the trouble to memorize her phrasing from the recording and lip synch perfectly to it. Total pro, as well as a great artist. And, from all accounts, a great person too.

Yeah, I was blown away by this. From the first notes, it’s very clear this is NOT the studio recording but it’s EXTREMELY clear this is also not live - and she almost completely nails it. Even got folks like Gerald Albright in the horn section doing their HARDEST miming lol. I am utterly floored by her acting commitment to this. It’s so quality.

She's lip syncing here, though its hard to tell, partly because she's so good at it (I think she was actually singing, just the mic wasn't switched on) and her actual live vocals are so good! In any case, live or not, she was/is a pro and a real class act.

Yes, I normally don't record--let alone post--lip synching performances. But Gladys Knight is and always has been a pro's pro, and she fooled me! I'd forgotten what an expert lip syncher she was. Of course, unlike many stars, she has no need to lip synch. But as Mr. Swanley points out, that's what many people--especially the producers of t.v. shows--wanted back in the day. Kudos to Knight for having the professionalism and talent to pull it off.

I'm agree: it isn't live. It's too perfect, too close to the official recording, including the "license to kilt" caused by the drum beat of a particular drum causing a false t sound. This is lipsynched, but it should be said that that's what everyone wanted at the time (see the star on tv but hear the perfect studio mix). It wasn't until later that abuses (Milli Vanilli!) made people suspicious of lip sync.
No, the 'kilt' is caused by the backing singers saying TO KILL at the same time, so we actually hear their T.

Yes, as San47di says, in the case of Gladys Knight, the lip synching doesn't matter. On the contrary, it's impressive how good she is at it. Most singers can't be bothered going back to a recording they've made and memorizing the exact phrasing they used. But Knight is a pro in every sense of the word: able to sing live--with perfect intonation--or to pull off lip synching so perfectly that it's hard to detect. Whatever a gig demands, she delivers. Plus, by all accounts she's a sweetheart.

Easy to tell,Narada m Walden had Gladys sing in a higher key than her norm.Having seen Gladys perform this in concert several times (1992 being the first ) she tends to ease 'off on the 'top' but fully lets loose on the mid to lower range, her (natural) vibrato ,controlled, gives a more passionate reading when she takes the note 'runs' .Her Artistry is impeccable.
