Turning left out of the roundabout isn’t the issue, it’s turning right when you have to change indicators while the wheel is upside down. Stupid. Go to Randwick where there is a multi-junction roundabout that requires you to keep watching traffic and imaging trying to do that hand-swap look at the wheel manoeuvre. Tesla are being idiotic with this and it’s currently making me look at other cars to replace my wife’s car. Meanwhile I’m keeping my old model S which has proper controls.

Since my previous post, after the indicator buttons on the new steering wheel replacement exhibited multiple times when the buttons failed to work upon first press, sometimes needing 3 tries or not activating at all, they suddenly started working first time every time the day after, midway through the day and after an 80km trip. I waited this long to get any further information from Tesla about how this could be so, such as remote calibration etc.. Therefore, nothing to report, although I did put forward some variables beyond what they might have done or my use of them (that's been consistent). Since then, the indicator buttons have functioned reliably upon first press. If you think your buttons behave poorly, then your steering wheel could well be faulty too.
After allowing reasonable time to observe the new steering wheel's sudden change, Tesla attended our home yesterday with a test M3 and we performed a follow-up button comparison. Both worked the same and both seemed to have broader sweet spots than those in the faulty factory fitted steering wheel manufactured 12/2023. Whether these buttons remain reliable, that's a totally different situation.
In summary, and given my decades long background in Special Education (cognitive and physical abilities), I can confidently and firmly say the turn signal buttons in their current state are a flawed, potentially unsafe and very poorly thought-out design. Without instant, unmistakable and reliable sight-unseen tactile clues for employing immediate reactionary response, along with developing muscle memory regardless of steering orientation, the current design over function is a complete and utter failure that needs remedy ASAP. It beggars belief how this ever passed muster.

No more Tesla now. Now more difficult without stalks. Play on the screen or upward multiple times if you need to reverse multiple times in a tight space. You don’t need to reinvent the wheels. I feel that they are trying to reinvent the wheels.

    @smithd1322 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

Great video Tom!, how cool to have a new model to drive around for a week!.
Can confirm the wipers have been fixed now with autopilot btw, still a bit laggy with speed changes when it rains on auto, but generally i have not ever had them come on using autopilot in the month since owning the car.
No USS is really the biggest problem for me, How did they think judging real distance from objects was gonna be fine with just a high mounted windscreen camera is a bit odd.
I love USS when im backing out of my driveway, carparks etc etc, i use the distance measurement all the time, trust it and i have measured it to be very accurate.
But now that's completely out the window, and could lead to more accidents, scraps and dents etc, specially for people who just trust this system and don't know any better specially if its their first tesla.
But what's worse, is that there is also no front bumper camera to help mitigate this change, this is a huge miss, how can a camera mounted in the high part of the front windscreen ever see what's right in front of the bumper and also judge distance from a low to ground object?. It just does not seem like it would ever work in this configuration and really makes me question Tesla's direction on this one, and makes me want to wait till its refined further.
You can really only trust that tesla vision will get better over the next year or so, Its like you can almost see Tesla having to re add some sort of distance measuring device down the track, specially as the competition ramps up and keeps these types of safety features and only improves on them more themselves, Tesla might have no choice but to add them back in to keep up with the competition.
No stalks is a big change that people just arn't used to, I don't see an issue with this and everything you did was fine with the turns, auto cancel turn signals work great also.
I think i'm fine with this as my current m3 works beautifully with this feature and i love it, so would not have an issue changing to a new steering wheel.
Loving the new seats also, these are gonna be awesome for summer and hopefully more comfortable also.
Everything else is amazing tho and adds great improvements / ride quality, I'll be looking forward to giving it a test drive myself, but i think I'll be keeping my 2023 m3 long term till tesla vision can get a bit better and they refine the highland model even more, you can only imagine the highland will be even more amazing 2 to 3 years from now with hopefully even more refinement and added features.

interesting, guess one will have to not use them on exits, like a lot of lazy people do now, including me...opps, but true. Usually the lane indicates the direction, and also I found that other drivers like indicators on cars as it gives them confidence that they know what that driver is going to do, so they dont have to do the more difficult thing, and look at the inclination of the car and the way the wheels are pointing. A thing I find difficult is fully blackened windows, where one cant see the driver or what they are doing. Used to be illegal here in SA, but the rule most have been relaxed....

And doesent the fact that you need to get used to it tell you it's a bad idea ?
The first time I sat behind a steering wheel it took me about two seconds to operate the indicators correctly without ever having to look at the steeering stalk ever again.
Now you are forced to look away from the road to find the right indicator button in a tight roundabout while the steering wheel is upside down or even more turned.
So how is that better or even safer ?
Of course you can keep your finger on the right button and go through the roundabout with just one hand in order to keep avoiding getting your hands twistet, but is that safer ?
I wouldn't say anything if the buttons, especially Teslas configuration, would really be the better solution, but we all know full well that not the case right !?

Hi Tom, I'm in Adelaide. I always enjoy your videos - always "realistic" and "genuine". I've had on order in for a Highland Model 3 since the initial launch day and I've been stuck on colour choice. After seeing the one and only display car that's come to Adelaide (which is Blue with a White Interior), I've fallen in love with the White Interior and I think that either the new Red, the Blue and the Stealth Grey all look awesome against that White Interior. I'd like to know your thought about the new Red - ie how much "deeper" is it from the old Red, how much does it "Pop" and also whether you think it is pretty darn close to the iconic Mazda Red ? I'd appreciate your thoughts please. Cheers.

First drive ever in a Tesla 22/12, a red 2024 RWD Model 3. Like Tom, 5 mins basic instruction by the Tesla rep before heading off. Thoughts? Love the OPD, the pickup is fabulous, even only using quarter of an inch of accelerator. Cooled seats nice, like how the screen comes on when use the indicators. The gear selection and park on the screen is ok, even the speedo is ok. If I bought one I’d be fitting an aftermarket instrument panel, maybe a HUD later. And probably aftermarket indicator stalks and one of the rotary dials from the same USA company. Ride is firm, a lot like a VW, car is quiet enough, screen in rear looks good, legroom looks tight if you are an adult. Michelin primacy tyres on the 18” wheels, like these tyres have had on other cars (VW Golf’s) and they transformed them with NVH. But in summary what a sporty drive the new model 3 is, a really nice drive, I can see the attraction. Just wish the colour range was wider and the wheel covers were nicer looking.

Great review! Uneditted and through the windscreen gives a real feel for the car. A few random thoughts:
Could you live without the stalks? Me too, it's just muscle memory to reach for the stalks, I'm not sure how I'd go with handing over that responsibility to my left thumb.
If the rear lights go up with the boot, that's something to be aware of if in case that you are stuck on a busy road at night and have to get something out of the boot, because unless there's another tail light then in that case the car becomes invisible to oncoming traffic. I had a friend from Uni who suffered a life-changing accident that way after a car rear-ended him while he was unloading things from the boot, so it's a concern.
Other than that and the lack of indicator stalks, the refresh seems really good. The acoustics of this car from the video are amazing. So peaceful! I think the main competitor will be the base model Seal. I'm thinking people will be tossing between the two, do they want to spend the 10k more on a Tesla for better range and luxury, or are the Seal's very respectable specs even on the base model enough to swing their decision? Interested to hear your thoughts and comparisons whenever you get a chance to drive the BYD Seal.

Not indicating properly could get you into a major accident with oncoming cars. Also, not sure if the govt will fine you for touching the screen too much whilst operating the car. Sorry but the screen based gearshift sucks if you are doing a 3 point turn, or reversing out of a driveway onto a busy road. The indicators on the steering is idiotic. Not interested until that is fixed, and I’m a Tesla owner and enthusiast.

Calibration will not complete without some 80kph plus driving like crossing the bridge so once you pass the bridge it should finish quickly. You can see where I am up to in the video as I write this.

Wow I honestly almost want to sell my Y for the new 3 just to get cooled seats lol. I really hope they come to the model Y in the future. The seats get super hot in the summer when you park outside and is very uncomfortable when getting back into hot seats 😢

Because of the stupid glass roof with no retractable shade !!

Having owned a very late model 3, you are in a good position to compare the new one. It looks like an already good car has been further refined with some changes that lower manufacturing costs. I would be surprised if you see even a 5% improvement in efficiency especially around the city.
