"Hitler's SS: Portrait of Evil" (1985) - Complete WW2 TV Movie

- Brothers Helmut (Bill Nighy) and Karl Hoffmann (John Shea) grow apart during World War II. Swept away by the hysteria of the Third Reich, blue-collar Karl becomes a storm trooper, but struggles to advance because of his lack of education. Helmut, a literature student at the University of Munich, disappoints his adviser, Professor Rosenberg (José Ferrer), by dropping out to join the SS. Both brothers fall for torch singer Mitzi (Lucy Gutteridge) -- though only one will live to regret his actions.
As the film takes place over a span of thirteen years (1932-1945), the main characters of Helmut and Karl are shown to join the SA, SS, and the army with various career paths. This film first aired on NBC on February 17, 1985.

I didn’t see the original film when it came out. But looking at this I think it is very well done . Noticed several faces who appeared in later films or TV shows.
From Nazi soldier to playing guitar naked in Love Actually, didn't see that coming.

Germans and Russians always have British accents for some reason.
It's the bablefish and Universal Translator settings. Hollywood loves to use that setting for so many of these types of movies and oh do they crank it up on Bible movies. Who knew ancient Hebrews sounded like they were born in the UK in the 20th century? Bablefish and Universal Translator did. LOL!

This is so good and what it does best is show how fast things can't get out of hand and it's too late to stop it, while everyone looks around and shakes their head and wonders, wtf just happened, how did we get in such a mess so fast?

Fascinating to see Jose Ferrer playing Professor Rosenberg when he's best remembered for playing a gay Ottoman pasha who would probably have gotten along just fine with Ernst Rohm.
On the other hand, nobody can claim that Warren Clarke -- formerly Dim from A Clockwork Orange, now playing an SS officer -- has been cast against type.

I think, someone not familiar with the german history, especially with the third reich, will not be able to understand the movie - therfore, this movie ist not made verry well. But to someone knowing the background of that part of german history it is verry interessting. Thanks for uploading.
A movie i've never seen with a mix of movie and tv actors all portraying their roles really well with some poignant moments and a real sense of menace.

I fear we are heading towards a similar event over the mass economic migration and false refugee claims of people that no country in Europe can absorb, hence the rise of right-hand politicians ascending nationally and in the EU. This is not me supporting any migration or refugees. We in the UK aren’t facing the same numbers as in the EU, but we don’t have the services, housing or wish to welcome those boating illegally from France and arriving illegally through other routes.

Such a great film. But it didn't really capture all the evil of these evil people or show them being punished enough for their evil. Nobody should have gotten away at the end.

In the beer hall fight scene, the Nazi (a National Socialist) uses “socialist & communist” as an insult against his opponents.
Makes me wonder if the writers were taking liberties with the dialogue.
They called it national socialism due to socialism being popular at the time. But the NSDAP was not by any means a socialist party.

How can any self-respecting media company expect to produce an accurate and unbiased account of a subject that they are very prejudiced against.
It used to be done all the time when people were committed to overcoming those things for their jobs. Nowadays not as common.
Right off the bat, the writers make an error. Nasties were pulled from both communist and socialist ranks to form a new party, sort of like the Green Party difference from the Democrat Party. These kinds of splinters shared much in common, and differed on one or two particulars.

This movie makes your heart sincerely race for the lives of the characters who are part of the worst system of people ever to live.
The best system ever. The only country that was out of the great depression, thanks to Hitler's economic policies. All German's were one. Untited behind the furher. He gave them back their pride. He gave them a sense of purpose. He gave them a higher standard of living. For the first 3 year's of the war the German's were the masters of most of Europe and half of Russia and part's of Africa and Greece, and the British isles. Amazing achievements from a WW 1 soldier, who was homeless and living in homeless shelters in his twenty's. Who's rise to power was extrodinary!

The problem is though what if you don't speak German? The potential audience become Germans or German speakers. Subtitles are pointless these days as reading is too much like hard work for most people. So what does that leave.... English speakers putting on German accents? Even sillier i personally think. Or Germans with American or Australian accents even? I don't think that would seem very convincing. Leaving English actors dressed as Germans speaking English aimed at an English speaking audience....🤔 Seems about the best most logical solution as any other that i can think of. Whilst were on this subject...what about that Obi wan kenobi and his English accent? There seems to be a lot of English accents of Tatooine... Bloody Ancient Eygptians ,Greeks, Romans sll speaking with English accents whilst speaking in English instead of speaking in their own extinct ancient languages so the authenticity is retained... 🤔 just a thought.
