EXO does have actually 9 members, but Lay is currently stuck in China. Lay is chinese and a very popular singer there. That creates a conflict between Lay being a member of EXO, because China and Korea do not get along at ALL. For that reason for almost 2 years now Lay hasn't been promoting with EXO and in those 2 years the only album he is on is the Tempo album and even on that he only sings in the chinese version of Tempo.
And they are originally 12 members but the 3 Chinese left because of health issues, and now they're 9 and only 8 Koreans participating, and the one Chinese was having his solo but he is still a member

They used to be 12 members but in 2014-15, 3 Chinese members left so theyre now 9. The first part harmonization was just spontaneous. EXO does have actually 9 members, but Lay is currently stuck in China. Lay is chinese and a very popular singer there. That creates a conflict between Lay being a member of EXO, because China and Korea do not get along at ALL. For that reason for almost 2 years now Lay hasn't been promoting with EXO and in those 2 years the only album he is on is the Tempo album and even on that he only sings in the chinese version of Tempo.
