  • In this video we explore Mount Pleasant and Rock Creel Park In Washington DC.
Mount Pleasant offers an eclectic mix of homes from Row Houses to apartment blocks. It’s also contrasted by leafy quiet streets and busy main roads with high traffic.
There’s even a historical walk marked by sidewalk posters that explain the origins and milestones of the area.
In the late 1800’s Mount Pleasant was considered a rural area as it was separated from the city by lots of open land, but due to a regular horse-drawn street car travelling between 14th street and downtown DC, it soon merged within the boundaries of the city.
By the 1920’s many houses, apartments and the library had popped up and the neighbourhood attracted middle- to upper middle class people.
However, there’s a dark side to the neighbourhood’s history - by 1927 all homeowners had signed a restrictive covenant forbidding the sale of houses to African Americans.
In 1948 this rule was abolished and the neighbourhood became more diverse and cosmopolitan in it’s residents.
From the 1970s to 1990’s parts of the neighbourhood were overrun by drugs, crime and other shady activities.
In the early 1990’s a 2 day race-fueled fight caused much damage in the area, but in the early 2000’s the neighbourhood starting seeing a reduction of incidents and improvements in the area.
Today Mount Pleasant is a multi-cultural desirable neighbourhood with ample eateries, grocery stories, cafes and bars, plenty of options for our vegan friends and a great mix of city life with nature access.

Nice video,I lived in Mt Pleasant for 10 years, now in Frankfurt but man do I miss Rock Creek Park. The way the FREE incredible National Zoo is nestled in the park and if you know how to navigate the trails you can pop in and out of Georgetown and other spots in NW without ever leaving the Park Nothing like it in any other American city.Central Park in NYC has nothing on Rock Creek Park. Thanks for making me homesick!

I have to agree with you! We're so fortunate to get to escape to Rock Creek Park! It feels more wild and natural than Central Park. Hope you're enjoying life in Frankfurt - it's an amazing city! Thanks for stopping by!
