The sellingpoint of the ps2 fat version was that it combined new dvd technology with a gamingconsole and still being cheaper than a stand alone dvd player in its early states. Later dvd systems were cheaper than a ps2 system but thats beyond the sellingpoint. Its so legendary because for its small size it was able to do so much, even being put together as a supercomputer or being customized to run with linux. Its production ended far into the runtime of the ps4, thats why you still could possibly get some new ps2 systems nowadays. If you treat it well, it lasts you an eternity
In 2024, own ps5, ps4, Xbox series X, PC, Switch, and I still think about the ps2….. just bought one and it got here yesterday. Best console ever lol. Definitely my whole childhood
I remember like it was yesterday.. I went to a local toy store, on my 50cc bike, with my second paycheck (first one, was to buy a small tube tv), and bought my PlayStation 2. Went home with the console on a giant plastic bag, holding it with one hand, and keeping it on top of the gas tank... praying that nothing would hapen!! And it didn't.. and it was one of the happiest days of my life!!.. 😎
True Crime: New York City. Man that game brings back memories. I remember my dad bought it for me as a Christmas/B-Day present since my B-Day is at 24th of December and I played the living hell out of this game on PS2. Unfortenatly my old copy stopped working properly, but I remeber playing this game twice and getting both bad & good endings. My best friend also loved this game to the point he bought the PC version for it and to my shock it had 6 discs and all of them were required to download the game on PC. It was basically Gran Theft Auto, just you playing as a detective/police officer instead.
I got my PS2 in 2002, which was about the same time as when you got yours since it released in 2000. The internet at the time wasn't very good, so I was never caught up on local gaming news. I got it for my 8th birthday. I remember walking into my local Wal-Mart with my dad and getting this. Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus was the first game I ever played on it, which is a cool thing to mention because the game itself had also released in 2002. So, I essentially got this on... not necessarily day one, but year one.
Ah...I still have my early PS2 (PAL, being in UK) in it's box. Love pulling it out froim time to time for nostaligia. Good video man, thanks for those memories. Also that "USB-like" port is an i-Link, it got removed from later FAT PS2 models (and all slims), but was essentially used as an early network port for 2P in games like Time Crisis 2.
You should maybe replace the cmosbattery in your system (check, if its a regular cr2032 or a special one with a connector, they are the same but still slightly different)
PS2 and PS3 are my favourite consoles of all time. Even when I play my PS4, I am usually playing an older game ported to the PS4. The reason the PS2 got so many sales was the DVD player. It drove early sales, which attracted 3rd parties to develop games for it. This, in turn, led to better sales as the system had more and better games than the competition. I was 24 when it came out, and I remember that the price point, the DVD player, and the games made this console way better than the GameCube or XBox.
This is definitely a trip to memory lane I remember getting a ps2 fat system for Christmas as a kid and getting final fantasy. Best memories ever I just wish I kept the box.
The playstation 2 is m favourite console of all time, I own two phat models, there's a reason why it's the best selling console of all time, No modern console doesn't even come close to huge game libarary of different genres this has.
I have one of these. Bought a PS2 when it was on store shelves and never opened it, or I did open it, but didn't take it out of the box. I can't remember.
Technically a frankenRSX hardware emulation phat ps3 with TOKINs replaced is the greatest system ever. You have the PSX, PS2 AND PS3 libraries. Thats well over 18,000 games across three generations at your disposal AND the system is almost completely reliable as the main two reliability problems are solved.
i bought a playstation 2 in the box for 100 bucks. unfortunately he lost the original power brick and was using a sega genesis brick. i love the ps2 for one massive reason. if you can think of something, there is probably a ps2 game about it.
Never owned a ps2 either. I was an Xbox kid. My cousin however had a ps2 so I did get to play god of war and killzone and other games. My house was strictly for halo.
We had everything in my household. N64, PS2, OG Xbox, and GameCube. I played all of them fairly indiscriminately, so they all got a lot of mileage. If I was in the mood for Halo, I was on Xbox, if I wanted to play some Zelda or Mario, it was either the N64 or the GameCube. If I wanted to play Sly Cooper, I was on PS2. I had other games, of course, but I'm just giving you an example to demonstrate the different use cases.
Wow u get the rare one 10 screw ps2 scph30001 v1 i have one still working until now never replacing the lens.. still playing bully😂 but slow when pickup up the disk game..

The fact that there’s only 7 consoles in existence that have surpassed 100 million units is insane
I cant believe the Switch is #3 it hasnt even been out that long comparitively.

Its a great console but the failure rate of the dvd drive on the phat PS2 was way too high. They fixed it with the slim tho.
Is it safe buying one still ?
I know folks that bought the PS2 not for games just for the fact they was cheaper then a DVD player. Think about how far we've came lol.
