  • This video shows the method I use to jump start my old tractor that has a 6 volt starting system, using a 12 volt battery. Since I recorded this I have figured out that the generator is not working, at least not well enough to keep the engine running. I guess I will be doing the 12 volt conversion for sure now.

    Hi Thx for posting this. I just got a 52 Studebaker with a 6 v system. I think the + on the battery goes to the generator, what I think is the ground (- negative) now a days on 12v cars. I need help to learn how to jumpstart it with my Toyota Camry. Can you guide me please?
    Camry: keep the motor turned off. Step 1. Put red cable on +, black on - or ?
    On Studebaker … Step 1. What do I keep connected to the 6 v battery? Step 2. do I Connect red jumper cable to starter? Or to where? Step 3. Where do I connect black jumper cable? Step 4. Turn key on Studebaker and press floor button to start it. Step 5. Disconnect which cable first from Studebaker ? Step 6. Re connect which cables to battery on Studebaker? Step 7. Disconnect cables from Camry and start it to let it regenerate. Please help. Thx aly

    Whoa... Did I catch that correctly? Is yours negative ground? Mine is positive ground.

      Yes, negative ground. I was surprised to see that when I got it.

    Hopefully the 12 volts didn't get into the 6 volt battery..

      It can’t. The positive wire goes to a push button on the dash. The circuit isn’t made through the battery in this setup.

    mine Is positive ground also. will polarity matter?

      @davidjfiedler  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it does. Both ways work but everything needs to be same, whichever you have.

      +David Fiedler for positive ground you should be able to reverse the jumpers on the tractor side.

      kewl, i just got a hell of a deal on a non running cockshutt. (first tractor ever owned) got points cleaned, new plugs in it and drained fuel last night. Plugs spark now! Cleaning carb out tonight. Just need a better better 6v battery. the one I have is weak & barley turns it over. No money for new one yet. I'm glad I learnt about the positive ground thing cuz I would have bet money if someone told me about this before.. I would have said yur cray cray man! lol

      Glad I could help. Once you learn more about these old tractors you might want to convert to 12 volt. I have a few videos up about converting this one to 12v.

      yea i'm planning on it down the road. I want to get a 12v deep cycle in it so I can slave it to my solar system in my pole barn for extra battery reserve through the night. I think that would be kewl! help run my lights, electric fencing & keep the battery tip top. Peace out
