i just got it in the mail I'm blown away at the build and overall feel of it. I've had very expensive equipment as well as very cheap over the years. This is solid and I don't see me running out of ideas anytime soon. Wonderful.

I'm absolutely excited about the combination of the chord mode and scale quantizer. That way one can sketch chord progressions really easily. Like, play D, G, C and you instantly have a 2-5-1 progression with the correct modes (D = dorian, G = mixolydian, C = inonian). I don't know any other keyboard (especially in that price range) which offer this functionality and I think it is highly underrated, so just wanted to spread the word! I was pondering back and forth whether the Keystep 37 has enough additional functionalities to justify the higher price, but _that_ feature alone makes it a no-brainer (for me at least).
Thanks for the review and introduction!

Bo, I know the studio set up is new and not complete, but the main camera shot with the mic blasting through the field of view is something you don’t want to repeat, as your face get lost in the frame. And what a nice face it is to not get blotted out by a mic.

I just got one of these (factory refurbished on ebay for $150!) and wanted to add one of my favorite functions, the user button for scales and the user mode for chords so you can input your own scales and chords. I'm not a keyboard player by training, but I do play the flute and do know maybe too much music theory for my own good. The user modes allow me to use the instant quantization features while still using things like whole tone scales and other stuff.

I really wish Arturia could make something like the Korg Nanokey Studio. I love the bluetooth/features and small form factor. The Nanokey has build quality issues and a poorly designed interface. Really frustrating changing stuff on the fly. The Keystep 32/37 is so smooth.
    Basically a Nano Keystep 25,
    - Small form factor maybe little wider than the Nanokey, but about the same height/thickness.
    - Keep the 8 Knobs, 8 pads and 25 square flat keys. 8 Smaller feature buttons and 2 smaller Knobs or Slider switches for the Seq/Arp settings. Map the parameters to the keybed like the 32 and 37
    - X-Y pad, with a dedicated Zones on each side for Pitch/Mod. Really tight if it had OLED tactile touchscreen. I could see that driving up the cost and losing some battery life.
    - RGB lighting so you know what modes your in. I like how the Nanokey lights up the keys for scales and stuff. I know Arturia could do it better.
    - All the features of the keystep 37 or least the best ones. Just switch to a mode that repurposes 4 knobs/4 pads
    - Connectivity Bluetooth, USB and CV/Sync
    - USB rechargeable with a decent battery
    - Of course the Arturia software.
    Keep the price under $200.

  • @Bone1996

Looks really neat! I bought my first controller keys (M49 MK3 and GX61) back when I was only using software synths and in the mindset that "Oh I want lotsa keys like the professionals!!!", and they're ok I guess. But I'm dying for something much more economical in size, and now that I'm starting to invest in the Korg Volca line of synths (Drums and FM), I also need a controller with actual MIDI cable functionality. And for it's price point/sequencer & arp/aesthetics/inputs and outputs, I think I'll definitely look into trading my other controllers in for this.

Yeah Behringer shamelessly copied almost everything from the Arturia Keystep. There are rumors that the Behringer clone was even too similar, so they swapped the arrangement of some buttons, but at the end, they did a 1:1 copy... I still would trust Arturia more and spend the extra bucks. Also because I think the Behringer move was too shameless. Wonder whether they might get a copyright infringement claim from Arturia...

The original Keystep also got an upgrade some time ago that let you easily set the sequencer length in that way. But it was the one feature that most video's didn't mention or only barely. There was much more focus on the Arp Octave feature and the Brownian mode for the Arp.
My main question though... Does it actually have a good clock now? A lot of OG keysteps have fluctuations in sequencer speed. Makes it useless as a master clock in super small setups (like Keystep + groovebox and you want to use the Arp/Seq.)

@BoBeats, I’ve been planning on getting a Keystep Pro because I don’t like blind sequencing, but this looks really good. What do you think would be a better buy for all around DAW/DAWLess jamming? Can’t find any proper comparisons yet

Is it possible to somehow connect a Keystep 32 with a Keystep 37 physically or somehow in the computer via channels? Beeing new to music prod. would it be better to get a KS 37 with my KS 32 or should I go for a Keylab Essential (49 or61)? My aim is to have 5 octaves that would control some VST (Instachord and Virtual Guitarist Carbon). Thanks!

  • @SyntheticFuture

I guess "affordable" is a pretty flexible word. It's twice the price of the MPK Mini I have right now. It does come with a bunch of cool features though like the chords and sequencer. For 30 bucks more you can get the Keylab Essential 49 though. And although that lacks the sequencer (I think?) that does have more overall controls. Less portable ofc...
I sort of wish they would merge the Keylab and Keystep as I just can't decide between the two. I like the Keystep Pro for it's multiple sequencers but at the same time I like how they intergrated AnalogLab control into the Keylab series. I want both of those =\

    • @BoBeats

Yesh so Keylab and Keystep are very different. Same as MPK mini which is more similar to the Keylab range

Does anyone know if I can use the chord mode and arpeggiator to 'save' that information into another sequencer, like a MPC? Basically what I want to know is if the MPC can sense that data and save it as a part of a sequence?

@@VincentsVideoVisions It outputs all notes as MIDI notes/events, and the MPC can record MIDI events from external gear. So the answer is YES.
I don't know though whether there might be any sync issues like... the MPC record mode has to start exactly at the same time as the Keystep starts to play a sequence (if it's a sequence you want to record). But basically, MIDI works with almost anything else which receives MIDI...

Is there a way to change the key of the sequence simply by making chords by hand? (even minor to major, like JDXi and similar do) Could this also apply to Keystep Pro? Maybe on all 3 tracks. It would be very useful for live improvisation

you can use the keyboard, arp & sequencer with the Volcas and Moog Subharmonicon. I dont remember if volcas knobs can take midi CC, if they do you can use knobs. Chord mode with Volca keys and FM since they can play chords. Not ideal for subharmonicon I think

@@BoBeats awesome, can wait to hook it up this weekend, and as for the sub harminicon, i can see why its not ideal, as its producing more somber tempo ply rhythmic and ambient noises, Maybe i can try it out on the Mother 32. When it comes to the dynamic chord mode (i.e. manipulating your created chord to maj/min/blues/etc), does this automatically manipulate all chords in the sequence, or can you manipulate individual chords in the sequence (i.e. add 11th to my 2nd chord in sequence, add 9th to the 3rd, minor to 4th, etc)
