  • @bahutu802
    @bahutu802 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I'm absolutely excited about the combination of the chord mode and scale quantizer. That way one can sketch chord progressions really easily. Like, play D, G, C and you instantly have a 2-5-1 progression with the correct modes (D = dorian, G = mixolydian, C = inonian). I don't know any other keyboard (especially in that price range) which offer this functionality and I think it is highly underrated, so just wanted to spread the word! I was pondering back and forth whether the Keystep 37 has enough additional functionalities to justify the higher price, but _that_ feature alone makes it a no-brainer (for me at least).
    Thanks for the review and introduction!

      Yeah Behringer shamelessly copied almost everything from the Arturia Keystep. There are rumors that the Behringer clone was even too similar, so they swapped the arrangement of some buttons, but at the end, they did a 1:1 copy... I still would trust Arturia more and spend the extra bucks. Also because I think the Behringer move was too shameless. Wonder whether they might get a copyright infringement claim from Arturia...

    I just got one of these (factory refurbished on ebay for $150!) and wanted to add one of my favorite functions, the user button for scales and the user mode for chords so you can input your own scales and chords. I'm not a keyboard player by training, but I do play the flute and do know maybe too much music theory for my own good. The user modes allow me to use the instant quantization features while still using things like whole tone scales and other stuff.

    I really wish Arturia could make something like the Korg Nanokey Studio. I love the bluetooth/features and small form factor. The Nanokey has build quality issues and a poorly designed interface. Really frustrating changing stuff on the fly. The Keystep 32/37 is so smooth.
    Basically a Nano Keystep 25,
    - Small form factor maybe little wider than the Nanokey, but about the same height/thickness.
    - Keep the 8 Knobs, 8 pads and 25 square flat keys. 8 Smaller feature buttons and 2 smaller Knobs or Slider switches for the Seq/Arp settings. Map the parameters to the keybed like the 32 and 37
    - X-Y pad, with a dedicated Zones on each side for Pitch/Mod. Really tight if it had OLED tactile touchscreen. I could see that driving up the cost and losing some battery life.
    - RGB lighting so you know what modes your in. I like how the Nanokey lights up the keys for scales and stuff. I know Arturia could do it better.
    - All the features of the keystep 37 or least the best ones. Just switch to a mode that repurposes 4 knobs/4 pads
    - Connectivity Bluetooth, USB and CV/Sync
    - USB rechargeable with a decent battery
    - Of course the Arturia software.
    Keep the price under $200.

    Maybe the next release from Arturia will be a 37 or 49 full size key with a sequencer that allows quantize off, OR, the level of quantize locked to the beat to be adjustable from 1-100. A controller such as this would open a whole new market to keyboard performers.

    Looks really neat! I bought my first controller keys (M49 MK3 and GX61) back when I was only using software synths and in the mindset that "Oh I want lotsa keys like the professionals!!!", and they're ok I guess. But I'm dying for something much more economical in size, and now that I'm starting to invest in the Korg Volca line of synths (Drums and FM), I also need a controller with actual MIDI cable functionality. And for it's price point/sequencer & arp/aesthetics/inputs and outputs, I think I'll definitely look into trading my other controllers in for this.

    The original Keystep also got an upgrade some time ago that let you easily set the sequencer length in that way. But it was the one feature that most video's didn't mention or only barely. There was much more focus on the Arp Octave feature and the Brownian mode for the Arp.
    My main question though... Does it actually have a good clock now? A lot of OG keysteps have fluctuations in sequencer speed. Makes it useless as a master clock in super small setups (like Keystep + groovebox and you want to use the Arp/Seq.)

    I guess "affordable" is a pretty flexible word. It's twice the price of the MPK Mini I have right now. It does come with a bunch of cool features though like the chords and sequencer. For 30 bucks more you can get the Keylab Essential 49 though. And although that lacks the sequencer (I think?) that does have more overall controls. Less portable ofc...
    I sort of wish they would merge the Keylab and Keystep as I just can't decide between the two. I like the Keystep Pro for it's multiple sequencers but at the same time I like how they intergrated AnalogLab control into the Keylab series. I want both of those =\

I want one purely based on the fact that it has 5 extra keys making the playing with both hands more accessable ( also I have a Beatstep Pro so not sure yet if I wanna shell out loads more for a Keystep Pro as well yet )

    I use my Keystep all the time, the only pain in the arse is no BPM. I have to hook up my Novation Mininova via midi to set BPM.
    Some people have previously asked me why it's so important to know the BPM, i find i need to know it, as i send audio into Ableton to record, so i like to know the correct measure so that Ableton is spot on from the off.

    • @Tony2dH
      @Tony2dH 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not 100% sure but I think you can sync bpm between Ableton and the Keystep over midi

    • @TLGElectro
      @TLGElectro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tony2dH you're probably right... I just couldn't be arsed researching it when i first needed to do it, so worked around it with another instrument. I'm not one for reading instructions or tutorials. If the Keystep would have had showed the BPM from the off it would have been almost perfect for me.

    • @Tony2dH
      @Tony2dH 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TLGElectro When you connect the Keystep to Ableton, you can go to the midi settings, and find the row with Keystep midi in and turn on the sync with the button in the middle. After leaving the settings, you need to click on the EXT button next to Ableton's BPM counter to have Ableton be a slave to external bpm. Then Ableton should follow the Keystep's bpm. To have the Keystep follow Ableton's bpm, turn on sync for Keystep midi out in the settings instead.
      (I haven't actually tried this as I don't have a Keystep, but I'm quite confident this should work.)

    I really enjoy the convenience of having a mini keyboard built into my synths, it has made modules almost obsolete. For programming sound design the mini keys are great, I can take the synth anywhere or have it located anywhere in the studio and easily sound design on it.....BUT!...........I never perform on mini keys. For 50 years I have honed my skills at first as an organist, then a pianist and then added synths in the 80s.....And so would NEVER buy a keyboard controller with mini keys. So I am outside this market, me and many others were all hoping the pro model, or new model would be full sized synth action.
