  • The #Suzuki #V-Strom 800 RE takes the proven formula of the 800 DE and dials back the adventure-ness to make something that's aimed at being better on the road.
But is the RE or 'Road Explorer' any good, and how does it compare to its longer-travel 'Dual Explorer' brother? We rode the bike at the international launch in South France to find out!

Great review, based on your experience with both, which one would you choose between the RE and the DE and in term of ergonomics, how was the RE in term of comfort vs the DE?

How does it compare to the Vstrom 650 ? Is it leagues ahead or just incremental? I found my 650 to be a little heavy and boring.

I had the DL650XT 2020. The RE has a shorter wheelbase so does feel smaller to me (6' 1") The DE is fine. The engine is very torquey and smooth with a small amount of vibes at around 5k (like the DL). Unfortunately I noticed the mirrors were affected by the vibes on the RE, unlike the DL. The dash is very good. The finish looks better on the RE/DE. I didnt notice the RE's weight. If you want to ask any more questions please do. I would say that if you are fairly tall the DL650 is a very good bike, I never found it boring. Sold it because of vibes when revs used a lot. The quickshifter on the RE/DE is wonderful and is bi-directional. I have the new Transalp now which is a great bike but I prefer the Suzuki torquey engine. The comfort is not much different on all 3 bikes. Hope that helps. BTW I tend to ride a lot in the countryside where torque is quite important and being able to excel at lower speeds.

The truth is that for day in day out driving,a small trip or a more spirited drive in back roads you don't need any of these, not even the quickshifter. I drive an MT09 and after setting somewhat to my liking the suspension i never touch it,neither the mapping or cruise control, even when it rains(i did a couple of times and it confused me as the bike response was different). And the quickshifter is off permanently.

I've had my V-Strom for around 17 years, over 64k. Do you know how many times I've adjusted the suspension? Around 2. How many times I've missed cruise control? About the same. These are great bikes. Probably will sell my old V and buy one of these.

People who can be honest with themselves don’t buy tall bikes to ride on tarmac. They are ungainly, unstable, shitty with side wind, and considering that most riders are short, they look pathetic at traffic lights, with the rider tiptoeing. And don’t get me started with lugging around three empty cases to prove one is an adventurer. Manufacturers need to stop following the foolish adventure fad and go back to making bikes like the Honda VFR or Suzuki GSX-F. Those were bikes fit for traveling on, not these foolish lowered enduro things.
