I've been doing DBT for 12 years. It is so effective. At present I have a great DBT therapist. The woman who is explaining Distress Tolerance in this video is doing an excellent job of explaining this. It was very helpful. Thank you so much!
Do you do it in person? I live in rural Canada and I cannot even seem to be able to find a DBT certified therapist within my province (state equivalent).
I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude (I've been in therapy for over 6 years), I'm just wondering... 12 years of doing it and you still have to attend therapy? It's so discouraging to me, because I've been on this journey for 6 years already (with different approaches of therapy) and the thought of having to do this for the rest of my life is disheartening... I'm tired.
@@katarzynaskrzypek3731 Yeah, it sucks. I don't think you're rude. I hope you will feel enough better soon that you feel confident in your abilities that you can go it alone.
Thanks for this. I definitely will share with my patients. If it is of help to anyone reading this, my channel has 37 videos of ALL the DBT skills, reviewing each one in detail. Please feel free to use it as a resource in your treatment!

Self soothing needs to be cautioned and clarified, as things that are self soothing are often harmful. Example, Self cutting, pulling out hair (Trichotillomania), sexual, alcohol.
@@Mockduck2020 agreed, grief counseling could be something that is more helpful to you. DBT is helpful as a bandaid to reduce symptoms in crisis, but it doesn’t address the deeper issues causing your symptoms. In order to make lasting change, I think addressing deeper causes for the pain you experience can be helpful
Very informative and clear 👌 thanks a lot! I have a question though, I'm ashamed to ask it to my therapist: as for the TIP skill, should we do the 3 steps corresponding to the letters in the very T-I-P order, or should we use only one of these three tool depending on the circumstances? Because after the cold water dive in, I find it hard to exercise 20min right after. Thanks a lot, sorry if I didn't get it! 😅
12 years.. you are probably more skilled at this than your therapist, you don't have to ever feel ashamed to ask your therapist a question like that.. that's what they are there for ❤️
If I can get some very great music going it helps me. I look for the silliest songs ever made. I actually spend a lot if time searching for music. The emergency list that's insane amounts of say "Korn* ect. like the big growl songs make those noises from deep in the diaphragm. Those for anger and heart fluttery life ending songs. Get that feeling out. Then to the crazy disco songs one hit wonders song. That make you laugh. If you tv it's about the same rule. But don't watch any jail and oppressive type crimes. No horror or thrills just comedy not mix with stand up..
I am interested in your input on something- lets say someone has just been informed a loved one has died. Would it be better to apply these immediately, or give themselves a minute to break down and sob before applying these skills?
Applying these skills doesn't mean they'll not breakdown, they'll still be sobbing their hearts out and that's pretty much normal, the difference is that they're at the same time grieving their loved one at the same time which regardless if they do or don't apply those skills would have to face the reality of it eventually, both live and faced the result of reality
Exercise harder but do it on psychedelics, and pray. You will be given a get-out of-distress free card by a divine source….the human mind. Or maybe the mid of God. Pray.
I screenshot some of the skills and have them on a folder on my phone. I also have the skills book on kindle on my phone and reference it. It really helps!
thought i'd hear something new/useful, but it's the same stuff. The most useless and even absurd is the whole 'radical acceptance.' -- sure, "Acceptance is the key" but if it were so easy, people wouldn't need these videos. But no one, not one person I've met in my life, including professionals, can explain just HOW do you accept an intolerable and/or unacceptable situation? ... They don't have the answer, neither does this video. They just keep telling you to accept the problem, but that's the whole pt: people cannot accept intolerable situations. And as usual, they give stupid examples like 'locking oneself" out of a car or dropping an egg: seriously. Those wouldn't even be on a list of "problems" for people for which they'd need therapy. Of course, if an egg is dropped on the floor, no one will stand there in need of "TIP" and "STOP" and "radical acceptance." All these 'therapists' like to use such simplistic and hence meaningless examples. But when someone faces a serious, grave situation they struggle with, all these therapists do is recite these "techniques' but never reveal the secret of "HOW" to accept 'radically."
i think you might be misunderstanding the situations in which one would use those skills. also, DBT is basically designed for people with overwhelming emotions, so getting locked out of a car could very much trigger something that would need a radical acceptance response!
I on the other hand don't care about the tone of your voice. I was too busy being grateful for the mass of information shared in a 10-minute video for free on the internet. There are actual coping skills listed here. Like, actionable items. With enough information to help understand the why behind the guidance. Basically, thank you. That is all.
Debora Gyllien I hate ignorant pricks like yourself. Be ACTUALLY grateful or gtfo her video if you don’t like her voice to the point of needing to point it out. Clearly you need these lessons more than most. POS.
I kind of agree, it's not just the content that matters but how it's delivered, I didn't like the tone either personally BUT there may have been a more tactful way to bring it up.

This is very well done. Perfect pace, nice to listen to, clear and good use of visuals.
Good pace. It's much faster than the other, slow, informational videos.
If you’re anxious and can’t handle how slow the speaker speaks, put it on 1.5 speed! Helped me tremendously

When you have the skills and know what you need to do, even in a hashtag, yet you won’t do it. It has to do with you, not DBT therapy.

This is what’s supposed to be helpful? Are there literally any types of therapy other than “stop feeling this way, but like this”?
At 1:05 you mention a crisis is 'short term'. Is that a book/DBT definition or yours, and what is that based on?
