    Thanks for the videos and tips on this subject. Changed mine today 'on the driveway' using 'Borg & Beck' parts. Drilled the old drop out as the shallow allen holes rounded! Mines 20 Years old now and I've recently completely replaced the inner and outer sills both sides. Thanks again.

    Thank you sir for taking the time to make this video (and your other X Type videos as well)! They are very informative and well made.

    Yes brilliant videos covering rear suspension problems Having these issues at the moment and will be booking it in for repairs Already had the control arms replaced at a " specialist Jaguar repairer" which got shot of the knocking but had the same result that you had in that I now have the sound of distant thunder. My xtype is a 53 plate with less than 80k on it Had it for 12years now not to many probs great car.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guessing the thunder will be the shock bushes failing.

    I've just watched all of your x type videos and must thank you for all of the information that you have given to me. I too have an x type that has 'thunder' from the rear suspension aea and have suspected that the arb to be the reason for while now. I plan to replace the bushes and drop links as soon as possible. Great videos and thanks again.
    regards, Jim

      +JimmyJagg Good luck. Remember to check the bushes on the shock absorbers - after replacing everything else the bushes went and made a terrible racket.

    • @JimmyJagg
      @JimmyJagg 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Concept Symetry Guitars I think that maybe after high mileage replacing just one bush on both sides may have put extra stress on the remaining bushes. I've already replaced the rear lower front arms, but my handling is still a little 'twitchy' when I push it around tight corners. When I bought the car (new) It felt like it was running on rails! Beautiful handling. Now it's showing it's age a little. lol
      Take care, Jim

      Putting new shocks on transformed my car. £150 from Europarts.

    • @JimmyJagg
      @JimmyJagg 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Concept Symetry Guitars Mine is the 2.0L Sport version (2002) with just front wheel drive. Suspension has been very firm from new and the shocks are still performing well. I think the state of the roads that we drive on today puts added strain on the suspension components throught. Maybe a complete replacement of all the bushes is what would be preferable, but money and health issues hold me back for now. Maybe a project when better weather is here.

    Just changed my ARB and drop links following MOT failure. Not bad for a complete novice. Thanks very much for the great videos, keep them coming. I need to change my water pump next on my 2006 Diesel X Type

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. These videos are aimed at people who can work on their front drive. In regards to the water pump mine leaked from the cover and I was able to reseal it without taking it off the car. You do have to take the battery out though.

    I had the same noise, before viewing this video, I took the car to a jaguar garage, they gave the car a good look over and gave me a list of problems (the bumping was only at the rear of the car)
    They said I needed rear shock absorbers, the off side brake disc and pads were needing replacement, front and rear,drop links need changing, front shock absorber top bushes, and the exhause hanger rubbers were worn. They wanted just over £1,000 to do the job. (the car drove lovely except for bumping noise at rear)
    The car was not worth spending a grand on so I changed the rear antiroll rubbers and drop links,,,, took off the rear shock absorbers,,, found that they were perfect, I couldn't find a fault at the front antiroll bar, it was tight, I did change the discs and pads as they were well worn,,, job done no noise and still driving like new.
    So watch out, even a Jaguar garage will bump the price, and faults up because they don't want to work on an older car.
    I'm not a mechanic, but I managed to do the job in a day.
    I had the same rust problem on the drop links, The new ones come with new bolts, so I just cut them off with a cutting disc.
    So thanks for this video, it gave me the incentive to attemp the repair myself.
    Just for my piece of mind, I had a mobile mechanic have a look at the other Jaguar garage faults, he said he couldn't find anything wrong with the front suspension, he inspected the parts I changed and said the bumping was definitely the rubber antiroll bar bushes, the brakes and discs still had a few hundred miles on them,,,
    So Jaguar was Bulls****ing me, just to make the job larger than needed,
    The car only needed the rear rubber bushes,,,,, bought the links and rubbers for £30, Discs and pads for £125, plus a days work,, big difference from the £1,000 Jaguar wanted.

    Not once did you think of using heat on stubburn nuts and bolts?

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have learnt the lesson with this car to use heat whenever I can. I usually use a kitchen carameliser because it has a very hot small flame. I could have melted the nyloc out of the nuts but it did not occur to me at the time. This was one of the first jobs I did on the X Type. Now I know better.

    The one thing i needed to know you did off camera.
    Those bolts and nuts are rusted solid on the anti rollbar bushes and we cant get them off.
    How did you replace those nuts and bolts?

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heat them up with a flame - I used a kitchen carameliser - and pour some oil in and then they should undo.

      Ever try and use a grinder or sawzall to remove the old ones ?
      A lot of the time, energy & effort is usually wasted on the removal of the old dilapidated old parts.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RJ-lk5pj It is rather near the fuel tank for a grinder. If you have the right shape power saw it might be easier. These videos are for people with minimal tools who work on the drive not in a workshop.

    You said you had problems getting the bolts out from the bush clamps originally, mine too are super rusty, what strategy did you use to get them out in the end, just wondering if you have any tips lol, thanks in advance, I know you don't still have the car ;-)

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My Dad has the car now and I still work on it. The Jag suffers from rusty fixings and if soaking them with penetrating oil, WD40 or 3in1 oil does not work I use a kitchen carameliser and heat them up really hot before trying to undo them. I did a video on it. th-cam.com/video/bCUIwDfrIeo/w-d-xo.html

    A Common fault, I've changed loads & loads of these arms and bushes and shocks when working for a Jag dealership, use an air gun on nuts never used an allen key, 'Terrible car so many faults.' use an hot air gun on arb ball joints to undo.
