  • It's a truck! it's in 28mm (1:56) scale and it's awesome. I had a lot of fun putting this Rubicon kit together and I give it six thumbs up. I'm going to need to borrow some additional thumbs.

That would be a Vickers K machine gun, not a BREN gun.
Good job building this Truck, Herpy!

I believe its a vickers k gun that you have fitted not a bren

The Vickers K guns were normally mounted on aircraft. The LRDG and the SAS chose them because of their high rate of fire and their design made them resistant to jamming in sandy conditions. Often mounted in pairs.

Dude, love your vids but you can't build a LRDG truck and not smother it in machine guns... that's what it's for. it's a gun bus! It's like building an ice cream van and leaving out the soft scoop machine?

  • @semperatis

It's not an air filter,it's a condensor that's added to the radiator to aid in cutting down overheating. Normally it was a Lewis gun that was mounted on the rear pintle mount, with the Vickers 'K' gun mounted, singly or as a twin mount on the front left mount.

This type of lorry was used by the Long Range Desert Group for reconnaissance behind enemy lines in North Africa. The LRDG also got involved in sabotaging Italian and German supply lines etc. and provided transport for one or two early raids by the SAS on Axis airfields. The lorry was a modified version of a standard commercial Chevrolet truck, hence the streamlined headlights etc.
What you thought was an air filter on the right running board was actually a drum for condensing steam escaping from the cooling system, to conserve water. The “ramps” were sand channels for putting under the driving wheels when the lorry got bogged down in soft sand or similar. The gun was a Vickers K machine gun, not a Bren.
(I’m just reading a book about the LRDG...)
BTW, a cwt is 8 stone or 112 lbs, and there are 20 cwt in a ton (at least that’s true in the UK imperial system of units, our American cousins seem to have somewhat mangled the system we bequeathed to them).

Jerry, is the 30 hundredweight its carrying capacity or its own TARE?

    • @markfergerson2145
      @markfergerson2145 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@nbell63 Trucks are typically described by their cargo capacity. The 30 cwt equates to one and a half tons which is kinda light for that size of truck's tare weight. I owned a somewhat later model of Chevy truck (1970) that was listed as a "half-ton" but it weighed the better part of two tons.

      Nigel Bell
It will be the carrying capacity. The British army also used 15 cwt lorries, and I’m sure they had a tare considerably more than 0.75 ton!

Hi there - what is the book on the LRDG you are reading and would you recommend it? I had a look on Amazon for something a few months ago but drew a bit of a blank. I would be really interested to learn more about their opeations outside of the role they played supporting the SAS.

It's by Gavin Mortimer, "The Long Range Desert Group in World War II", published by Osprey, ISBN: 978 1 4728 1933 8, also available as an ebook (or PDF from the Osprey webshop). It's not bad, it's got quite a lot of detail about history and operations, and quite a few photos. I've read the same author's book about the SAS in WWII.

The 'Rampy' bits are Sand Tracks. If the vehicle bogs down, particularly in sand and the like they are wedged under the wheels to provide traction. May have to get Rubicon model just to say I have built one :).
