I love that these people who aren't "into" bikes have such nice bikes. I wish I could convince my family and friends to let me build them tricked out commuters without hearing "that's too much to spend on a bike!!"

I love watching these bike check videos. Something I noticed is that a lot of people have front baskets but I don't think I have seen anyone with a rear rack. Is front basket really more common than rear rack in Japan? Why is that? I think here in North America, rear racks are more common.

i think about this a lot, i see a lot of people using lowriders in japan over rear panniers too. my completely made up theory based on nothing is that because of the many mountains and lots of climbing, people prefer the front being weighted over the back.
i live somewhere quite hilly in australia and prefer keeping my bags on the front but i feel like i am in the minority, it's mostly us newfangled "alt cycling" surly riding types who keep stuff on the front.
it could also just happen to be normal for no particular reason. why are rear racks more common in america?

@@eggplant9277 Good point that there is probably no reason. It might just be that bicyclists kept following what other bicyclists around them were doing and it just caught on for a specific region. But I think the argument about hilly environments makes sense too. Personally, I think I went with a rear rack because I wanted stuff I was hauling to be out of sight.

People who live in the city run with anything in the basket, such as shopping, so it's safer to have a load in sight. In Japan, it has been established as a style of commuter bicycle for a long time. There are many people who are relatively short in height, so the back loading is also inconvenient when straddling. It's even better if you use it as a commuter with many rides.
