    This song's an example of why Soul Asylum's such a great band. First, the harmonies are beautiful. Second, Danny Murphy's lyrics are interesting without being inaccessible. It's true that Dave Pirner writes the lion's share of their lyrics, but Dan's his equal in all respects.

    I remember the night I heard Cartoon on mtv’s 120 minutes. I had to have that tape!
    The next afternoon, I picked it up at Kahala mall…(played hooky)
    Still love it today.

    Soul Asylum is one of those bands that have been around forever, but despite a short time in the spotlight during the early 90's, they never reached super-stardom status like bands such as REM did. I've always wondered why, given Soul Asylum's musical creativity and clever song writing, but to me its just as well, since they have never had to compromise. I appreciate an act like them that can continue to just be themselves no matter what their status.

      I think most would agree, and even the band themselves, that the success of Runaway Train was an anomaly. They were a college cult/bar band that desperately needed a hit, and theyt landed a massive one. So much so, it bacame a double edged sword. They were not able to replicate its success, and they quickly faded from the spotlight.

      Not sure either, they first came to my awareness as a Guns N Roses warm up act in the early 90's and fell in love with them there and then, better live too :).

      @DecemberGuy77 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Pirner was too shy and didn't have the "star power" it would have taken for the band to stick around. I remember interviews with the band where Dave wouldn't even speak.

    • @flip65515
      @flip65515 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because the first successful record they had SUCKED. This seemed to be a phenomenon with indie bands from the late 80s and early 90s. Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP...Even Metallica never quite became successful on such a large scale until their first bad album. It's not their fault. They probably got sick of starving to death. I blame it on the poor taste of their adoring public. But seriously dude, "never had to compromise"? If "Runaway Train" was on this record, it would have stuck out like a herpe sore. But sometimes cashing in backfires. For example, Bob Dylan's "Empire Burlesque"( Dylan's idea of becoming more appealing to a larger audience) turned out to be one of his poorest selling records.

    My god, this takes me back. Still one of the best alternative songs ever after nearly 40 years. I remember buying Hang Time on cassette. Popped it in the stereo on the way home from the record store. This song came on after a few and I was floored. Dave sure could write a hit song. The world just needed time to catch up to them. Fucking great stuff. So many great memories.

      Was this really their first video? They had multiple albums released before this, although I can believe it because they never really got noticed until Runaway Train. Great memories of them live, opening for Husker Du in 1986 (Made to be Broken has always been my favorite record) and at one of the skankiest pub venues in London, the (now sadly demolished) George Robey in Finsbury Park in probably 1988. Good times.

    I would never say they suck because I think they are one of the best bands ever
    I went to college at NDSU in Fargo and saw them play at Kirbys in Morehead,MN
    in 1989 and it was the BEST live show i have ever seen and it was in a bar and
    they hung out and actually drank and yes talked to the fans....Will never forget
    and can remember it like it was yesterday.

      I was @ that Kirbys show in 89. Underage MSU student at the time, but managed to get in and get blind drunk. Soul Asylum were deafening loud but powerful. I ended up meeting and taking home an insanely gorgeous blonde from.NDSU that became my girl for roughly two years. We made out in an unlocked postal truck across from the bar, and somehow stumble back to my dorm.

    THERE'S A RINGIN IN MY EAR IT'S HEAVEN SENT! Dave Pirner = King of the Corny One-liners. I heard that he wanted to have a biography of his life written, but since Winston Churchill is dead, so lie that dream. All joking aside, I've been to hundreds of shows, and SA is at the top. Fantastic live band!

      I remember a reviewer once wrote something along the lines of "Soul Asylum has more musical ideas per song than just about any band in history." That's about right. As a songwriter's band, they're right there with Lowell George-era Little Feat.

  • @skrap5461
    @skrap5461 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Now everybody's looking after me,
    If I'm dragging by some coat tail,
    I can't see it's too dark,
    But I've got to know what's got the best of me.
    When the circus that you left goes on parade,
    And those things you see seem so far in your charade,
    Too far,
    But I'm feeling like I don't dare look away,
    Don't look away.
    Did it almost make you feel,
    That something's got to happen soon,
    When you wake up feeling lost in your own room.
    If you're crying and you fear you're gonna drown,
    If you think we'll rise above,
    You'd better look around,
    You'll see.
    It's a mountain made of sand crumbling under me.
    Maybe I'm chasing shadows on your wall,
    They loom so large,
    But make me feel so small somehow,
    When you're chasing your own tail spinning your own wheels.
    And a time to leave,
    And a time to stay,
    I guess the things I look away.
    Did it almost make you feel that somethings gotta happen soon.
    You're in the movies now that I'm in your cartoon.
    There's a ringing in my ears that's heaven sent.
    There's a beast out on the ruins,
    Some broken down lover's lament.
    It goes on and on but it won't go away.

      It's called a play on words. There is an actual phrase "crying in your beer". It refers to drowning in your sorrows at a bar due to loss love or feeling sorry for yourself. Treating sorrow with alcohol will kill you. He wants his friend to buck up. Google the meaning of "crying in your beer." You'll see.

Trip Shakespear ( one of the brothers went onto Semisonic?), Martin Zellar/Gear Daddies, Soul Asylum, Replacements, Bob Mould/Husker Du, Kristin Pfaff (sp?)/Janitor Joe, Prince, Babes in Toyland, Mock Duck ( not well known), Sura Hoolies ( who I saw quite a bit, mainly in St. Cloud), Marlee McCleod ( who stopped doing music as far as I know quite some time ago,) and Information Society ( sadly overlooked by most people.) Hi. Saw this video when it came out and loved it and it's stayed in my mind ever since and finally saw it again recently. Great song. But does anyone know which actual cartoons were used in this video. I woukd kind of love to see the original cartoons. They look VERY early to me. Anyway if anyone can help then thank you. :)

    and babe im chasing shadows on your wall
    they look so alive but make me feel so small (so small)
    when your chasing your own dust in your own wheels

      Those lyrics are wrong. It's "loom so large but make me feel so small""chasing your own tail, spinning your own wheels"

      @heatherveronica75 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct lyrics: “Maybe I'm chasing shadows on your wall
They loom so large but make me feel so small somehow
When you're chasing your own tail, spinning your own wheels”

    Dave...why don't you play this anymore? It's usually just Grave Dancer's Union and Let Your Dim Light Shine On, both great albums...but man, Hang Time and And the Horse They Rode In On are both incredible.

    Funny how this music wasn't popular in the 80s to explode in the early 90s, killing most of the bands from the 80s :)

      I like every Soul Asylum album I have, and I probably have quite a few? Reminds me of Goo Goo Dolls, who I liked years before their big breakthrough hit. It's kind of nice to like a band before they are big stars, because I think you focus on the music more then? Not sure, just a thought.

      Fired or left the band, not sure. Dan Murphy left for sure, Karl Mueller died of cancer (that dude could chain smoke cigarettes at an impossible to compete level). I kind of knew Dan and Karl through the musician community, but didn't know Grant or Dave at all really. Dave actually knew other musician friends of mine (mostly female, probably slept with him).
