    Undoubtely, his technical skills are superb; nevertheless, playing the surbahar like a "low-tuned" sitar just doesn't cut it for me. The instrument is intended to sing more in a dhrupad anga...
    The rendition of the rag is fantastic until the ego kicks in and Steve Vai takes over the playing.
    Still, to each their own, right?

      I agree. Surbahar is an instrument that is well-suited to elaboration of the raga, and that is why the alap part is great. However, no instrument is more suited to dhrupad ang than the rudra veena, and it is best seen when one listens to Ustad Asad Ali Khan. There is a recording on TH-cam of him performing Raga Chandrakauns.

      There is an hour long recording of Ustad Imrat Khan performing raag Miyan Malhar on the Surbahar. After listening to it, one realizes that although an excellent player himself, Irshad Khan has much to learn from his father.

    • @PeterDad60

      I play Sitar and also Saraswati Veena (not Rudra Veena). The Rudra Veena has that soulful low tones that few instruments can reach. The Sitar can't touch the low tones. Sadly for me, neither can my Sarod. My Saraswati Veena can get me some low tones as can my Guqin. The Surbahar is getting some good low tones and can go higher and faster as well so it is more than a low tuned sitar as you think. Some day you may learn that! BTW I used to think as you do Diego, but my ears have been opened.

      I think it's pretty standard for surbahar performances to end in a drut gat (aka "Steve Vai" playing)... most compositions start with a slow alap then build into successively faster portions til you finish off with a jhala tehai, which is the fast explosive fireworks grand finale. But in the old days dhrupad did not do this, so I hear what you are saying in that you prefer the old way. But including the faster drut gats at the end of surbahar compositions has been happening for several generations now :)

    Is it the only bass instrument in shastriya sangeet??

    • @udoyhasan3928
      @udoyhasan3928 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rudra-veena is the major bass instrument in Shastriya Sangeet. Surbahar was very lately created to resemble Rudra-veena as the masters of Rudra-veena didn't want to teach Rudra-veena anyone else except their children. So students from outside the family were taught the Baaj (technique of strings) of Rudra-veena on Surbahar. But later people started to apply non-Dhrupad sitar elements on Surbahar too. Surbahar is now mostly player in a light classical manner.

    Surbahar played like a sitar. Virtuosic but I am sure you would balk if cello was played like a violin! I feel there is an acute lack of healthy criticism in Indian classical music.

      Uhhhhh, isn't that physically impossible? 😶 Unless you meant by playing cello like a violin in a way that the cellist is playing in the instrument's highest range, and perhaps quickly too, so that it sounds much like its smaller brother. Either way, I personally don't have a problem with people playing bass instruments in a similar manner to their higher pitched brothers.

    • @abhijitbaner
      @abhijitbaner 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Guuzaka - actually no; there is a reason why the instruments are different (sitar vs surbahar), one is supposed to be played with short murkis, the other deergha mends & gammakas; the resonance plays a big factor with the bass instruments; that is missing in this short presentation; hear some alaps of great beenkars & you can feel the difference
