    Why is no one discussing the unnecessary switch from decima, a highly acclaimed, still supported and updated Sony engine, to UE5, an engine that is too demanding and unoptimised for this console generation? What is the reason for this?

    • @ramonosuke
      @ramonosuke 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      UE5, is from Epic Games, a company, last I checked, is 31% owned by Tencent. So my tinfoil hat theory is that these devs are getting crazy "kickbacks" from Tencent to utilize this engine, by all means possible. It's easy to implement the work to temporary, little experience interns, however you need actual programmers to actually optimize the damn thing.

    • @NeovanGoth
      @NeovanGoth 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      DF has already explained that in multiple episodes of DF Direct.
      There are multiple reasons, with one of them simply being that it is relatively easy to find staff who's already experienced with UE, whereas to learn how to work properly with a custom engine can take up a lot of time. So even if a studio's main team keeps working with the in-house engine, it can make sense to use UE for projects done by less experienced teams or the help of other studios.

    I replayed the classic Until Dawn before the remake and collected everything to have a direct comparison with the remake. I played both on the PS5. So, about the remake:
    * No controller speaker support! This was in the original. Completely incomprehensible why this is missing!
    * The PS buttons X, Circle, Triangle, and Square are all white! In the original, they were colored according to the controller. It was easier to read and much nicer visually - aesthetics matter too!
    * The title music is worlds worse than the original, especially the main theme.
    * The first driving scene in the intro stutters badly, and there are occasional stutters later on (not in the original!).
    * The font used to display which character plays where and when is much plainer (worse) than in the original.
    * Chapter 1 has an orange color scheme during sunset instead of blue. It doesn’t really fit. But later on, everything is back to blue anyway.
    * Jessica’s face is noticeably chubbier.
    * The other characters look okay. Emily, Mike, and Chris look great.
    * Matt looks quite different.
    * There’s no sound anymore when the shooting cursor appears, unlike in the original, where the sound even got louder towards the end. The crosshair also looks worse.
    * You can’t run faster with L1 anymore! WHY???
    * The new totem turning mechanic is more tedious. You have to find a specific spot instead of just turning it like in the original. A pain for speedrunners.
    * There’s no brightness setting anymore!!! WHY???
    Apart from the overall better graphics, the game is darker since you can’t adjust the brightness. Sure, there are new starvation totems and a few small additional scenes. But that’s it. My conclusion is clear: the remake is far worse than the original. It’s completely unnecessary, you can save your money and stick with the cheaper and better original. You won’t miss anything.

It is winter, where in the world is the sun still up at 9pm in winter? I live in Central Europe and in winter the sun is down at 5pm, so at 9pm it is long complete dark. I'd love for DF to add a segment in all reviews targeted specifically on looking at the impact of downsides of ray-tracing. There's always a lot of positive coverage on RT features...but in realtime gameplay, RT blur and "fuzz" in lighting, especially in dim scenes is a serious concern. By itself, DLSS generally resolves to a solid image at 1440p and 4K, but when you mix in RT lighting's grainy nature it can begin to seriously detract from the image. A TON of sharpness gets lost in the ray-tracing's inaccurate reconstruction from the bounce data.

      @JohnDoe11VII 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ImGonnaFudgeThatFish Nah, really has nothing to do with lighting artists. Unreal's raytracing (I guess all raytracing?) is customizable for per pixel count and some other settings I cannot recall. Lumen lighting gets all funky and looks like static unless you crank the values up, but even if you set the values to something shy of nearly eliminating the visual static in the lighting and shadows, it's a massive hit to performance not reasonable to run on modern hardware. All the Lumen stuff for real-time rendering is just a bunch of low performance accurate but blurred shadows. It never produces clear and clean images in motion like games used to look in Unreal3 and 4.

Outdoors with visible snow fall with imitated moon lighting and dynamic flash light gets you 2x FPS. It's more complex than that, but Unreal5 is such a hog with default settings that barely affect the image but will tank performance like crazy is the modern standard.

    For everyone who might want to know what the heck VSMs are, here's a not so short summary which will help you understand what the heck are you seeing.
    VSM stands for "virtual shadow map", they are an extension of "virtual textures", more specifically "runtime virtual textures".
    Virtual textures is a technique where instead of loading the whole texture when you need it, you divide it into smaller portions, you try to figure out which of those portions are visible in the models in your frame, and you load only those portions. What the "runtime" variant of the virtual texture means is that instead of loading the portions of the texture from disk you actually generate those portions at "runtime".
    You might ask yourself, "when would that apply? why would I want to generate texture in runtime?". This is useful when you have some expensive shader calculation that is dynamic but at the same time mostly static, meaning, it changes during the game execution, but the results are mostly static throughout the game. For example, blending a bunch of texture together, you might need to do it at runtime because you want to change those individual textures for the blend, but maybe after you blend them you rarely change them so the result is always the same. By making these runtime textures "virtual" you only need to do it for the portions you see in a frame and not the whole texture and only when necessary.
    Finally, VSMs are simply runtime virtual textures but for shadows, if you assume your shadows don't change much you "bake" or "cache" the result of normal shadow computation into a virtual texture so that you only ever bake the portions that you actually changed. This way you don't need to keep calculating the shadows every frame for everything in the level, and instead you only calculate it if the shadows changes and only for those portions visible to the screen.
    If for whatever reason shadows do change or some dynamic element in the game makes them change, those "portions" are considered "invalid" and need to be recalculated. What you see in this footage with the "black squared shapes" glitch, are those exact "portions" (technically called "tiles") not being invalidated properly or not being recalculated properly. So the previous result of the "tile" stays for too long and there's a mismatch between the shadow and the objects around it.

    this remake though, is far from perfect. There were a couple of visual glitches and one softlock mechanic which annoyed me a bit, but other than that there are 2 major flaws for me personally:
    1)The new OST cannot be put on the same level as the original one, it's not even close. Should've had an option to choose whichever one to use.
    2)I much prefer the fixed camera angles in this title, I felt like it was part of the game's art, it was used sooo well and its usage was always smart
