    The Marseillaise was composed during the French Revolution, which was very bloody. It was a song for the French people, to be strong and to rise for their liberty, against all the threats inside and outside the country. It's really patriotic, maybe violent, but for French people, it's a way to remember what was the price of the democracy and to live in freedom and solidarity. And I think it's really more interesting than an anthem to the glory of a queen...

    • @bios171
      @bios171 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      +barnakle6331 actually it wasn't composed for the revolution (in some way during it, but THE ffrench revolution doesn't exist it last almost a century of troubled political situation, ocsilating between a republic and an empire) but it is a song that soldier sang while walking to the front, when french declare the war to austrich (I dont know if It is the rigth way to spell the name of that country), and if I listen well to my history class, the french army was a rvolutionaire, and austrich didnt want france to became a republic. Anyway I am on of those who think that it should be replaced by "le chant des partisants" composed during WW2 to symbolise the resistance.

    • @Tdm9du63
      @Tdm9du63 9 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes, I agree with all of that (even le chant des partisants, a beautiful and also violent song ;) ) but for me, the war against Austria (and not austrich :P ) is a part of the Revolution, even if it's not a conflict inside the country, but because it was about defending ideals of the revolution against the threat of the european monarchies.

    And La Marseillaise was written to motivate the french troops to protect their land.

    I will explain why the French national anthem is so violent. It was written during the French Revolution for the army of the Rhine. The French Revolution was the bloodiest episode in the history of France. The King of France, Louis XVI, helped the Americans during the Independance War. (he did just to annoy the English, by the way). But later, because of that, a crisis set in France: No more money! The French people was hungry. In July 1789, the people of Paris went to the Bastille for having weapons, but the prison director refused. So the Parisians cut off his head (trolololo). The French revolted against the King. Finally, a constitutional monarchy was established. But later, the King ran away but was captured. In 1792 the king was guillotined. The war stopped in 1815 after the fall of Napoleon. It was very bloody, thousands of people were guillotined. On each square of every French town, there was a guillotine. The National Anthem comes from that time, that's why it is so violent. By the way, the French do not wear berets since 150 years.

      when the Marseillaise called the People to arms, it was for a higher purpose.
      The Marseillaise also recognizes that the fight to secure our rights as citizens, is an ongoing process. Gainsbourg recited less well known verses, and identified this /again as a multi-generational struggle
      Serge kicked off a controversy. "Aux armes... et cetera" Citizens can grasp the prize and speed off to honorable service;

      +icepops25 Yup. And Mexico's is pretty brutal, too. Less brutal than France, but still a song to get the people riled up. It goes a little something like "Mexicans, do you hear the cry of war..." and then something about the sound of a cannon. La Marseillaise is pretty hardcore.

    2. England : France trusted you and you exterminated us
    Just that you know, French is spoken in ALL Africa, in North America, was spoken in Vietam and that the English learns it in school
    Our national anthem is absolutely beautiful and harmonious. And just because we went through a lot more does not mean you should criticise every single thing about us including our anthem who is something else than just saving the queen or beautiful things.

      yes. And this part is also a 2nd way to read the text. apart from the tumult of ther period, those who went to war were mostly peasants anxious of what would happen to their fields (ie their mean of living and also their family). The impure blood is the one of the lower society class dying for the game of the powerful one... Hasn't change a bit since then.

    The Mexican National Anthem is quite violent as well, especially the second and third verse.
    "War, war without truce against who would attempt
    to blemish the honor of the fatherland!
    War, war! The patriotic banners
    saturate in waves of blood.
    War, war! On the mount, in the vale
    The terrifying cannon thunder
    and the echoes nobly resound
    to the cries of union! liberty!
    Fatherland, before your children become unarmed
    Beneath the yoke their necks in sway,
    May your countryside be watered with blood,
    On blood their feet trample.
    And may your temples, palaces and towers
    crumble in horrid crash,
    and their ruins exist saying:
    The fatherland was made of one thousand heroes here."

    Oh but I see you haven't seen the Mexican one either, which I'm not sure if it is as bad, but still. This is the chorus "Mexicans on a war cry, ready the iron and the mounts, and may the innards of the earth tremble, at the resonant bellow of the cannon", then I wasn't sure what the worst verse was but I chose " Before, mother land, that your children submit under the yoke, may your countrysides be showered with blood, over blood may their feet be stamped. And your temples, palaces and towers be demolished with a horrid racket, and your ruins remain, saying: Of a thousand heroes this mother land was". Tho' it is said that we took a few tips from the French when the Independence movement was made so, maybe this was another example ;)

    Because I am a nerd, I have to interrupt with the reason for this song! The anthem was written during the French Revolution, the most violent and most iconic uprising probably in all of European history. The three colors of the French flag have to do with the colors the revolutionaries wore in protest of the monarchy, and the lyrics themselves were meant to inspire the common people to fight.

      La version intégrale dell'hymne italienne: il n'est pas si paisible😂
      Frères d'Italie,
      L'Italie s'est réveillée ;
      Du casque de Scipion,
      Elle s'est ceinte la tête.
      Où est la victoire ?
      Elle porte chevelure
      Parce que Dieu la créa
      Esclave de Rome.
      Rassemblons-nous en une cohorte ;
      Nous sommes prêts à mourir,
      L'Italie nous appelle.
      Nous sommes depuis des siècles
      Piétinés, moqués,
      Parce que nous ne sommes pas un peuple,
      Parce que nous sommes divisés.
      Rallions-nous à un seul
      Drapeau, une seule espérance :
      De nous unir tous ensemble
      Déjà l'heure sonne.
      Rassemblons-nous en une cohorte ;
      Nous sommes prêts à mourir,
      L'Italie nous appelle.
      Unissons-nous, aimons-nous,
      L'union et l'amour
      Révèlent aux peuples
      Les voies du seigneur :
      Jurons de rendre libre
      Le sol natal :
      Unis par Dieu
      Qui pourrait nous vaincre ?
      Rassemblons-nous en une cohorte ;
      Nous sommes prêts à mourir
      L'Italie nous appelle.
      Des Alpes à la Sicile
      N'importe où il est battu
      Chaque homme de fer
      A du cour, a de la poigne ;
      Les enfants d'Italie
      Ainsi clament merci ;
      Le chant de toutes les cloches
      Sonnent les vêpres.
      Rassemblons-nous en une cohorte ;
      Nous sommes prêts à mourir
      L'Italie nous appelle.
      Elles sont de jonc flexible
      Les épées qui se sont vendues :
      L'aigle d'Autriche, déjà,
      A perdu des plumes.
      Il a bu le sang d'Italie
      Le sang polonais
      Et celui du cosaque.
      Mais son coeur lui brûle.
      Rassemblons-nous en une cohorte ;
      Nous sommes prêts à mourir
      L'Italie nous appelle.

    Based on my understanding of world's history, the song was written based on the French Revolution. Which to my knowledge is very violent and bloody, that's why the lyrics is quite gruesome. As a Vietnamese myself, the national anthem of my country was also based on the war, and there's one particular part in the song where it goes : "Đường hành quân xây xác quân thù" which translate LITERALLY into " The road we march BLEND/BUILD the bodies of our enemies" ( The translation might not be correct word by word, but the meaning is still pretty much exactly the same). So the two capitalized words in the lyrics above, even if you choose the former or the later, it's still very similar.... GORY....

      +Meghan Hirsh Those lyrics are from "My Country 'Tis of Thee" which is a different patriotic American song, not the officially designated national anthem. Yes, both songs have the same melody/tune with different lyrics.

      +Leslie Djokovic Actually a German immigrant wrote My country Tis of Thee, also known as America; he was inspired by a German patriotic song that used the same melody as God save the Queen/ King in 1831 while he was attending college in the United States, it took him a half an hour to come up with an English version of the German version of the song and tailor it to be about America. At least that's what I heard. He did it to honor he new homeland because he loved the country so much. My country tis of thee
      Sweet land of liberty
      Of thee I sing
      Land where my fathers died
      Land of the pilgrim's pride
      From every mountain side
      Let freedom ring
      My native country, thee
      Land of the noble free
      Thy name I love
      I love thy rocks and rills
      Thy woods and templed hills
      My heart with rapture fills
      Like that above
      Let music swell the breeze
      And ring from all the trees
      Sweet freedom's song
      Let mortal tongues awake
      Let all that breathe partake
      Let rocks their silence break
      The sound prolong
      Our Father God to, Thee
      Author of liberty
      To Thee I sing
      My country 'tis of Thee
      Sweet land of liberty
      For all eternity
      Let freedom ring

    I know our natinal anthem can seem very violent, but you have to know this has been written during war campaigns to fight an invader and then later has been use for french revolution, knowing the backgrounds of our country i appreciate this anthem : ) Because it means our nation and country is the dearest to our heart and that we will fight for our values. I think it's always relevant now espacially after the attack on Charlie Hebdo.

      luina78 Je ne suis pas d'accord. Les paroles sont datées, elles sont excessives et elles appellent à la discrimination. Qu'est-ce que c'est que cette foutue histoire de sang impur si ce n'est qu'il y a deux catégories de Français? Les bons qui seraient citoyens et les mauvais qui ont le sang impur (on vise ici clairement les nobles et le clergé). Je ne suis ni noble ni membre du clergé et je trouve cela terriblement daté, préjudiciable et, finalement, scandaleux au XXIème siècle. Gardons la mélodie qui est belle mais changeons les paroles. Les Allemands l'ont bien fait et plus rien n'y déclare que l'Allemagne est au-dessus de tout (Deutschland über alles) et aux aussi auraient pu arguer de justifications historiques pour maintenir des paroles dépassées. Pourtant, ils n'en ont rien fait et ont changé les paroles de l'hymne allemand. Nous nous grandirions à les imiter sur ce point. Changeons les paroles de la Marseillaise!!!

    • @luina78
      @luina78 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jo Ama Mon Nom tout dépend dans quel conteste l'on prend l'hymne étant d'abord été écrite pour la guerre contre l'autriche je pense que le sang impur représente l'ennemi plus qu'une certaine catégorie de français vu que l'on y parle de je cite "cohortes étrangères. Mais la marseillaise est un chant qui a été crée pour soulever le peuple contre un envahisseur, non pas discriminer.Oui la France a changé, mais pourquoi changer aussi les paroles? Cela nous rappelle comment la France s'est construite, ses défauts et ses valeurs, qu'elle a pu nous transmettre ( les bonnes comme les mauvaises). elle représente un volet capitale de notre société, la changer serait l'oublier, oublier les bases sur lesquelles a été fondé notre société et les sacrifices et crimes qui ont été commis pour permettre à notre pays d'exister. Les paroles de l'hymne sont désuets mais pas leur message, de plus uniquement garder l'instru n'auraient pas vraiment de sens. Si tu veux te faire une vraie idée sur message et du sens va jeter un coup d'oeil au paroles en entier ça aide ; ) www.marseillaise.org/english/francais.html
      Après c'est un texte très controversé et il y a beaucoup d'opinions divergentes on ne peut ajmais être sur à 100% malheureusement
      J'ai également trouvé une petite analyse qui explique bien ^^ www.etaletaculture.fr/culture-generale/les-paroles-de-la-marseillaise-a-la-loupe/

      luina78 Je suis allé voir ces analyses. Cela ne me convainc guère. Les Autrichiens ne sont pas plus impurs que la paysannerie française ou la noblesse angevine.
      S'il fallait ne rien changer à cette Marseillaise mal foutue que l'on voudrait préserver de toute évolution comme le Graal de notre histoire bancale, je militerais alors pour que les Allemands récupèrent, pour les mêmes raisons absurdes, leur "DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES" et envoient foutre les autres Européens qui s'insurgeraient au prétexte que "Vous savez, c'est notre histoire bancale à nous. Nous devons l'accepter et faire comme nos voisins Français qui ont fait du conservatisme de leur histoire l'alpha et l'omega du cocardisme. Alors, oui, chers Européens, l'ALLEMAGNE EST AU-DESSUS DE TOUT"
      Cela ne vous ferait-il pas réagir que les Allemands aient une telle attitude? Cela me gênerait tout comme me gêne le sang impur des paroles de la Marseillaise.

    • @luina78
      @luina78 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jo Ama Mon Nom Je ne vois pas le message de la Marseillaise de cette façon pour moi elle reste un vestige du passé et est un peu comme la Shoa, un acte horrible qui a gravé l'histoire et qu'on ne doit jamais oublier... je ne pense pas que beaucoup de français soit d'accord avec cette idée de sang impur non plus moi la première, je voulais juste replacer la chanson dans son contexte d'origine mais évidement l'idéologie de s'applique plus aujourd'hui, je ne connais pas l'hymne allemande j'irais voir^^
      Ce pays est sans doute celui qui a eu le plus de pression pour redorer son image, bien que la France a trempé dans la collaboration aussi l'image de notre peuple a été moins terni en 45. Après je suis d'accord qui si les pays étrangers considèrent l'idéologie selon son hymne comme on pouvait faire avec l'ancienne hymne allemand il est vrai que ça ne reflète pas notre société maintenant et qu'il faudrait songer à une hymne plus adapté...
      je crains que la changer nous fasse oublier l'importance de la période ou elle a été écrite, c'est comme un monument on a pu guillotiner des gens sur certaines place publique c'était des actes de barbaries mais ça ne me gênerait pas de voir une place nommé "place de la guillotine" ça nous obligerait à nous souvenir de notre passé, je ne sais pas si j'exprime bien mon idée mais voila >.<
      c'est un sujet qui devrait être discuté à on n'est pas couché ou dans ce genre d'émissions ça serait très intéressant de voir plusieurs spécialistes en débattre !

      You won WW1 because you had Britain, Italy, and Russia (and America who joined extremely late) fighting along with you, France itself didn't last much longer after Germany entered your soil.

      +Some Edgy Sniper Main We lost 33% of the country's population. 33% of the population died. And 4 millions people were wounded, sole were so disfigured they were called "Gueules cassées" ("broken faces"). Look it up, open an history book. You'll see how many cities were destroyed. Entire villages were wiped out the map. Most of the war took place on our soils.
      Today, nearly everyone has a grand-parent that fought during WW1 and maybe even died here.
      So yeah, please educate yourself before spreading lies.

      HiImKirrian it kinda is in fact, it's like a motivation song for people to free themselve from tyranny, so of course it's violent but it's also full of hope !

      HiImKirrian It's about rising against tyranny, they didn't put the last part with the true message, saying that the people should rise against tyranny, so it is filled with hope and joyful after all !

    • @Hodoss
      @Hodoss 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HiImKirrian It's both violent and peaceful, sad and happy. It's the roaring voice of the French people after years of being crushed down by the fucking monarchy and religion. It's the Soul of the Revolution. We are going to suffer and die again, but this time, for a good reason.
      As +liankyquette said, you have to listen to the whole song:
      Arise children of the fatherland
      The day of glory has arrived
      Against us tyranny's
      Bloody standard is raised
      Listen to the sound in the fields
      The howling of these fearsome soldiers
      They are coming into our midst
      To cut the throats of your sons and consorts
      To arms citizens Form your battalions
      March, march
      Let impure blood
      Water our furrows
      What do they want this horde of slaves
      Of traitors and conspiratorial kings?
      For whom these vile chains
      These long-prepared irons?
      Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
      What methods must be taken?
      It is us they dare plan
      To return to the old slavery!
      What! These foreign cohorts!
      They would make laws in our courts!
      What! These mercenary phalanxes
      Would cut down our warrior sons
      Good Lord! By chained hands
      Our brow would yield under the yoke
      The vile despots would have themselves be
      The masters of destiny
      Tremble, tyrants and traitors
      The shame of all good men
      Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
      Will receive their just reward
      Against you we are all soldiers
      If they fall, our young heros
      France will bear new ones
      Ready to join the fight against you
      Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors
      Bear or hold back your blows
      Spare these sad victims
      That they regret taking up arms against us
      But not these bloody despots
      These accomplices of Bouillé
      All these tigers who pitilessly
      Ripped out their mothers' wombs
      We too shall enlist
      When our elders' time has come
      To add to the list of deeds
      Inscribed upon their tombs
      We are much less jealous of surviving them
      Than of sharing their coffins
      We shall have the sublime pride
      Of avenging or joining them
      Drive on sacred patriotism
      Support our avenging arms
      Liberty, cherished liberty
      Join the struggle with your defenders
      Under our flags, let victory
      Hurry to your manly tone
      So that in death your enemies
      See your triumph and our glory!

      There were 53 major conflicts in Europe. France has been a belligerent in 49 of them, and the United Kingdom in 43. Among the 185 battles that France has delivered over the last 800 years, her armies will have won 132 of them, and will have lost 43, leaving only 10 undecided battles, giving the French military the record of victories in Europe.
      The white flag is far away for the French :)

      C'est vrai que si on regarde notre histoire militaire on se rend compte que les Etats-unis sont vraiment mais loooooooooooooin d'être les plus grand guerriers du monde. En fait la France à toujours été complètement craqués niveaux guerres.
      *(après des recherche plus précise, je préviens il y a beaucoup de chiffres)*
      Il y a eut 53 conflits majeurs en Europe. La France aura été un belligérant dans 49 d'entre eux, et le Royaume-Uni dans 43.
      Parmi les 185 batailles que la France a livré au cours des 800 dernières années, ses armées auront gagné 132 d'entre elles, et en auront perdu 43, ne laissant que 10 batailles indécises
      Donnant ainsi aux militaires français le record de victoires en Europe et donc dans le monde. La France est la nation qui a participé au plus grand nombre de guerre et de bataille dans toute l'Histoire de l'Humanité.
      - Sur les 800 dernières années la France c'est battu environ plus de 200 ans contre l'Angleterre, plus de 150 ans contre les nations germaniques, plus de 190 ans contre les Espagnols/portugais, et face a de nombreux autres nations encore.
      Bien Souvent ces guerres était mené contre la France en infériorité numérique face a des coalitions de plusieurs nations visant a la détruire.
      La France, nation guerrière par excellence, les stratégie déployé par ces généraux sont encore étudier de nos jours, notamment les campagnes de Napoléon Bonaparte.
      Sur tout les Terrains et continents la France a su montrer au monde ce qu'elle valait au combat.
