I was watching this video this morning with my 6 year old granddaughter. As we were watching it, I decided to explain who you were and what you were doing. We live around the corner on the same street as Aaron, so we are now on the hunt to find a video that shows him helping. So when I explained that you had a you tube channel , she says “ so he’s real?” Yep he’s real. Still enjoying your adventures and it’s nice to see after all that work you can finally enjoy life. The last scene about the carving on the signs brought me back to a year ago when I went to Italy and the Colosseum, sad to say people carved their names on all the bricks even there. Enjoy your time traveling! PS. The neighborhood is very quiet, you need to come back and build another boat! ❤
That so so very sweet to hear… hope you find a good Aaron video soon! If you pop an address to me through our email address, I’d love to send your granddaughter a post card from us. And on your carving note, maybe it’s interesting: Not all of those engravings in Rome were likely all that new. Romans during the empire were well known for their sometimes mundane, explicit, or shocking graffiti. It’s all over the place, and we consider now that it is a bit of an interesting time capsule/ documentation of it. -Anne, a humanities minor who is a nerd for the classics
Skylark is a beautiful boat built in a beautiful workshop. The oars are wonderful, such attention to detail. It was an honor to meet Bob at the launch. Good to see you both back on Arabella.
Truer words never spoken; "...it builds up and then you can't find anything"---Bob Emser. I don't have volunteers but I do have family and friends messing up my limited ability to keep things organized.
It's so great to have a tour of Bob's shop! I'm always amazed when I watch his videos at the immaculate space and perfectly organized tools and space. Not to mention the wonderful vessels he creates. Thanks, Bob! I can confirm from not so great experience the fact that varnish is conducive to blisters if applied to an oar handle. It took me forever to sand it all off! You guys really hit all my favorite occupations: Boating and boatbuilding, Rock climbing and hiking, NM (I'm a UNM grad and cherished my time there ). Please keep on being true to yourselves.
👍👌👏 Oh WOW, what a wonderful birthday surprise = a bath in a hot spring! By the way: Hshrmph mimimimimi 🎼🎶 Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday to Robin, happy birthday to youuuuu! 🎵🎶 2) Of course I'm now eagerly looking forward to see Victoria sailing. Additionally I'm curious how it is to row the tender with those unique and beautiful masterpieces. I simply love to row. As always: Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and especially health to all involved life forms (humans, animals and plants).
Happy Birthday Robin. It was nice to see you stopped by Bob's shop I enjoy watching his channel. Good to see that you made it home safe from an amazing trip that you will remember for a lifetime.
Happy Birthday, Robin, and welcome back home to Arabella. It was nice to see that you stopped by to see Bob, and allow us to become more familiar with his background. In all of the video, my most pleasant moment was witnessing Akiva's acknowledgement that he was back in a familiar place .
I recognize Steve appreciates Robin as she him. This warms my heart. I enjoy all the videos they share with us as well as those involving Arabella. I also enjoy how they appreciate Akiva as they seem to. Now get back to that boat.
Glad that you were able to visit NM it would have been cool had I could have said hello in person. There is a lot to do here but looking forward to more adventures with Arabella. Happy Birthday Robin.
Happy Birthday Robin from Boulder, sorry we missed a chance to buy you a great cup of “Korean” coffee here in Boulder (Colo)… I’ve loved following you Steve & Alix since the lead melt and Keel pour! Looking forward to seeing what comes next!
Happy Birthday Robyn. Thank you both for bringing along with your journeys now the build is done. Loved seeing the SKYLARK, she's a beautiful little boat
I've always enjoyed Bob's channel which I started watching about the same time as your channel, Steve. Bob is such a fine, kind and generous craftsman. You were lucky to get his help with Victoria. And I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the trip and climbing that you and Robin did, and of course the proposal!! Made this old geezer tear up. Happy Birthday, Robin!!
Bob is a real gentleman. FYI ....although you probably know it already ..... lignum vitae was used for making crown green bowling balls in Britain for many years... a relatively cheap source of base material for Bob's projects 🌝 🇻🇨
Good morning Arabella family. That was one whirlwind of a vacation. I bet it feels fantastic being home. Steve, how is your mom doing. I continue to pray for you all.
Hi Kathy! Happy Friday! Alyson is doing well, thanks for asking. They have her chemotherapy dialed in better now so it’s not as disruptive to her blood chemistry. Thank you so much! -Anne
I grew up and went to school in Las Cruces. Spent many hours wandering the hills around and up into the Organs, many trips to Gila and lots of the places you've shown. Brings back lots of good memories. So glad that ya'll have shown the rest of the world what a special place the high Sonorran desert can be. Glad you had a good trip - thanks for sharing it.
thank you once again for a beautiful video. people both on camera and behind it make this content so compelling. please accept my gratitude sent with every best wish.
Awesome trip guys! Happy birthday Robyn ( I hope I've spelled that correctly ) Bobs new boat is spectacularly beautiful. He is a true artist. The Black Walnut looks truly stunning especially the transom!
Happy b-day, Robin! Another great video. Thanks for the visit to Art of Boatbuiding - what a great shop - makes me embarrassed about how un-neat mine is!!
Traditionally, the whole pulley thing was a "block". The sheave, pronounced "shiv", was the wheel part (the piece which can be produced entirely on a lathe). Interestingly, the first mass production facility in history was set up by the British Royal Navy to make wooden blocks, which during the Napoleonic Wars were in unprecedented demand for "ships of the line", to the tune of 100,000 blocks per year, which was quite challenging given that they had been individually hand-made. The production facility went by the name of Portsmouth Block Mills, and everything was drived by two stationary steam engines via overhead shafts and leather belt drives with dog clutch engagement. Once it was bedded in, ten men could produce what had previously required 110.
I noticed your crossing the creek with packs fully strapped on. I was taught, many years ago while hiking in the sierra Mountains , to unhook all straps and carry the pack on one shoulder as a safety precaution. If you fall in the fast moving water your pack fills with water and becomes a lead weight, and almost impossible to escape from. Congratulations and many Happy Birthdays ahead !
Happy Friday everyone, Happy Birthday belated Robin. ( Hi viewers Please don't forget to like and subscribe and drop a comment for the Algorithm your support is greatly appreciated)
Yup! Many end up equipped with rowlocks in case the wind dies. Not easy to row if the centerboard trunk is uncomfortable, but rows fairly well. Dreamy lil boats. I love sailing them. -Anne
Lignum vitae is a fascinating wood to work with, very dense and consistent, and yes, it is self lubricating. Back in the day, we used it to line stern tubes in quite large ships. These days I use it to make nuts and saddles and the occasional bridge for stringed instruments.
Happy birthday Robin, have a great party. 🎉🥂 Good to see you there home safe. 😀👍 And why has Akiva got to be so cute? He's a big softie and I'd love to give him a hug. 🥴👍
When you said Happy Birthday I knew you didn't mean me. But, since this is airing on November 10th... which IS my birthday, thank you. If you're wondering, I am 66 today.
Well I guess that explains why Bob's work is art! But as for the Haven not being known for being fast, it sure doesn't look slow to me, and I've sailed small boats for 45 years
@AcornToArabella The small keelboat is going to have an entirely different kind of pace - and in certain sea states might really surprise you. The new scow-bows not withstanding, fast boats just look good, and that shapely little boat is gorgeous. And the FJ & 4twinkie? Please. How 'bout something cool and fast like a Taser?
Beware all friends of arabella's Channel for the third time in a month the TH-cam algorithm has unsubscribed me from both Acorn to Arabella and the Art of boat building along with Sampson boat company! I wish there was a customer service hotline for TH-cam cuz I would love to throw a fit I have missed out on so many videos
Too bad you didn't have time to get to the pueblas in the Gila National forest area. They are amazing too. Beautiful area with a small trek up into the pueblo.
Quite a long time ago I had posted a suggestion that Bob build a tender for Arabella. I sure wonder if you guys were thinking the same (before my comment) or if there were others suggesting that this collaboration should be a reality. How did this come about?
Sweeps are a nickname for oars, so someone might call them sweeps, but sometimes when people use that word they’re specifically thinking about very long oars for racing shells that have a kind of hatchet-shaped blade. -Anne
Now I understand why Bob builds boats like an artist - he IS an artist!

Happy Birthday Robin! Hope you had a great trip 🙂 We'll now return to our regularly-scheduled adventure!
Just fell in love with Bob all over again.
Happy birthday Robin hope you had a great day from Illinois
Happy Birthday Robin! Letting us tag along on this outdoor adventure has been a pleasant surprise for all.
Skylark is a beautiful boat built in a beautiful workshop. The oars are wonderful, such attention to detail. It was an honor to meet Bob at the launch. Good to see you both back on Arabella.
Now it all makes sense. I didn't know about Bob's past, so as others have said, his crafts are pieces of functional art.
Really sweet seeing you two coming "home! home! home!" as an engaged couple.
I scraped the varnish off my oar handles: much more comfortable to use and no blisters, or hot spots. Also non slip.
Any place on my boat that I’ll handle, every grab rail or handle, gets oiled. My oars are unoiled and unvarnished, too! -Anne
Welcome home folks. I remember my first hot spring Takhini Hot springs. Nice trip.
Awesome that you visited Bob Emser's shop. I love that guy, and his channel is one of my favorites.
Thank for watching!
Truer words never spoken; "...it builds up and then you can't find anything"---Bob Emser. I don't have volunteers but I do have family and friends messing up my limited ability to keep things organized.
There's always a "bit of driving" once you get back to Maine! Getting to the border is only half the trip. Happy Friday, 'bella fam! ☕
I don’t know how many pictures of the Piscataqua bridge I have, but I felt the same feelings I always do seeing it in this video. Happy Friday! -Anne
Another great A2A video update. Thanks for sharing
And thanks for watching!
Great!
Thank you
I use plenty of walnut in my small boats, above and below the WL. It is actually fairly rot resistant and quite suitable for boat building.
Great craftsmanship on the oars. Happy you are back on board.
It's so great to have a tour of Bob's shop! I'm always amazed when I watch his videos at the immaculate space and perfectly organized tools and space. Not to mention the wonderful vessels he creates. Thanks, Bob!

Daylight saving now sone in UK & US so back to noon here for new video. Happy Friday everybody from Plymouth UK
Happy Friday, Phil!
Happy Birthday, Robin, and welcome back home to Arabella.
It was nice to see that you stopped by to see Bob, and allow us to become more familiar with his background.
In all of the video, my most pleasant moment was witnessing Akiva's acknowledgement that he was back in a familiar place .
That was a sweeeeet moment. Thank you!
Happy birthday Robin

Good morning Akiva 🐺 and Crew , Happy Birthday Robyn 🎂🎉🎆😸😺
The background music is always so good, you guys! It's done perfectly, and is not overused. Great video!
We’ve got a link to Ben’s music in the description!
I think we can all relate to Bob at 9:10: "I thought, 'I might as well cast it myself.' Because A) It''s an enjoyable process. And, uh... yeah." 🤣
Happy Birthday Robin! Great tour of Bob's shop, fascinating to learn that he has made sculptures. Now I have to find them 🙂
Love the copy of Breezing Up in Bob's shop. Happy birthday Robin
Glad that you were able to visit NM it would have been cool had I could have said hello in person. There is a lot to do here but looking forward to more adventures with Arabella. Happy Birthday Robin.

Happy Birthday!
No doubt you made Bob's day, coming by to visit his shop.
And he made ours!
Rockin Robin is 30🎉❤! Cheers and hoping that all your adventures lead you in the direction you never expected!
Happy birthday Robin. You both are so fortunate to have each other. Such a beautiful couple. God bless your union.
Happy Birthday Robyn. Thank you both for bringing along with your journeys now the build is done. Loved seeing the SKYLARK, she's a beautiful little boat
We love Bob and his channel!! Don't worry Bob; if it's a Herreshoff Design, it will "always be" plenty fast!!! DD
I've always enjoyed Bob's channel which I started watching about the same time as your channel, Steve. Bob is such a fine, kind and generous craftsman. You were lucky to get his help with Victoria. We are so very grateful for Bob’s friendship and generosity! -Anne
Home Sweet Home indeed!
How nice that you have become a sailing channel now that some other sailors I follow have become boat builder channels!
Fair winds
Happy Friday and Happy Birthday Robin....cheers...rr Normandy, Fra
Happy Friday, Richard!
I see there is a print of Winslow Homer's "Breezing up" on the wall. I have the same print in my Family room. Great choice for a boat shop.
Bob is a real gentleman. FYI ....although you probably know it already ..... lignum vitae was used for making crown green bowling balls in Britain for many years... a relatively cheap source of base material for Bob's projects 🌝
🇻🇨
Wow! I’d love to have one of those! -Anne
The skylark looks luxuriously nice 👍
And with the masttip bronze birdy it seems the artist 👩🎨 never left the artworld🤫😜
Hear hear! Still making art.
-Anne
BEAUTIFUL BOAT BOB !
Thank You!

Akiva knows what's coming, what a happy dog!
Bob also makes fine tools.
He certainly does! Those are some of my favorite videos of his. -Anne
I love so much of this video!
Thank you! That’s so kind.
Love a good shop tour! 😁 -Anne
Another beautifully constructed video. Thank you.
Cheers, that’s very kind!
When you walk into Bob's shop; I want to see the video of the fabrication construction of that massive wood work bench!
I built that bench at least a decade before TH-cam was created. So Unfortunately, no documentation of its build.
Thanks for your interest!
🩷 Great Birthday surprise! 🎉 ❤️
Thank you this was a very enjoyable and relaxing video. Welcome back to Arabella. ⛵🇺🇸
Thank you for watching!
Love the Gila!!!

Been to the Gila. Great place for a birthday! Happy Day, Robin! Next time hit up the Weminuche, Very cool also! Windom Peak! Durango area.
ahhh.. bringing back new to me boat memories.
by spring, you will navigate that DC panel blind. just like the bathroom light switch at home.
😁
"All aboard the Skylark"
Happy Friday everyone, Happy Birthday belated Robin. ( Hi viewers Please don't forget to like and subscribe and drop a comment for the Algorithm your support is greatly appreciated)
Happy Friday, Aynsley!
Happy Birthday, Robin!
Great video
Happy Birthday 🎂🎂🎂
I've seen people row an H12 1/2 when I was a kid in Marion MA.
Yup! Many end up equipped with rowlocks in case the wind dies. Not easy to row if the centerboard trunk is uncomfortable, but rows fairly well. Dreamy lil boats. I love sailing them. -Anne
@@AcornToArabella yeah, I would see people standing while rowing 12-1/2 in the few times we have light breeze in Buzzards Bay!
Lignum vitae is a fascinating wood to work with, very dense and consistent, and yes, it is self lubricating. Back in the day, we used it to line stern tubes in quite large ships. These days I use it to make nuts and saddles and the occasional bridge for stringed instruments.

Good to see you there home safe. 😀👍
And why has Akiva got to be so cute? He's a big softie and I'd love to give him a hug. 🥴👍
great video
The eye shine at beginning of the video was clearly Sasquatch
😳😁
Happy birthday Robin. 🎉❤
28:08 for a couple of seconds I was mortified thinking you were going to show y’all’s initials in that board. 😅
I started the video, there was 144 likes on it and 315 at the end... I added like number 316!
🏆🎉🙌thank you!
When you said Happy Birthday I knew you didn't mean me. But, since this is airing on November 10th... which IS my birthday, thank you. If you're wondering, I am 66 today.
Haaaaaappy birthday! 🎉🎉🎉 And yes you take those well wishes and run with em. I say so. -Anne
The overall item is called a "block" and the middle that turns is a "sheave".
Thanks!
Moving right along at 81 mph!!😉
Ha! Reminds me tangentially of something a dear sailing friend used to say, “Nothing goes to wind like a 747.” Heheh -Anne
So good to see Akiva being a dog!
Well I guess that explains why Bob's work is art! But as for the Haven not being known for being fast, it sure doesn't look slow to me, and I've sailed small boats for 45 years
No, it’s not necessarily very slow, but it isn’t a 420 or an FJ! 😁 -Anne
Excellent stuff bro
Kittery Navy Yard, my kid is stationed there right now. USS Greenville.
You didn't stop sculpture when you started boat building!
Well said.
We’re feeling the hits! Thanks for the heads up. TH-cam officially says that’s not happening but we are hearing about it anecdotally for sure.
Hey, Bob, I wanted to say I really like your sculpture at City Hall in Chicago. Epic. Whose idea was the rustable steel? 🙂
Bob's workshop has 1/2 scale Spitfire wings on the walls. Notable. !
What a beautiful video. What camera are you using? Thank so much.
Thank you, that’s so kind! We film exclusively on iPhones. Presently an iPhone 13.
Too bad you didn't have time to get to the pueblas in the Gila National forest area. They are amazing too. Beautiful area with a small trek up into the pueblo.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Quite a long time ago I had posted a suggestion that Bob build a tender for Arabella. I sure wonder if you guys were thinking the same (before my comment) or if there were others suggesting that this collaboration should be a reality. How did this come about?
@17:57 Will the oar leathers get some sort of treatment (e.g. snow seal, boot wax), or do you just let them weather au natural?
I like to use tallow on mine to keep them moisturized. -Anne
There's one possibility to make oars fit your hands. Take a 10mm thick sheet of neoprene and sculp it to fit.
24:26 ❤awww!
Oars with varnished handles tend to slip in your hands when wet. Unfinished handles don't do this so much.
Indeed!
Kinda funny you pronounce Herreshoff as [Hrr-shoff], while it is actually more like [Harris-hoff] (German for Lord's hope or lord's court) 😅
👍
🙌
15:12 A little tension here about the way the timing worked out. Bob thinks quick and shifts the focus.
(And again at 22:10)
Put some Obenauf’s on that leather?
Is anyone familiar with Cliff Stoll of Numberphile fame? Bob Emser reminds me of him. Perhaps they are cousins. :-)
Not for the first time, it becomes clear that Steve doesn't actually watch Bob's channel.
Are those oars, or would those be sweeps?
Sweeps are a nickname for oars, so someone might call them sweeps, but sometimes when people use that word they’re specifically thinking about very long oars for racing shells that have a kind of hatchet-shaped blade. -Anne
