  • Andrew Johnson was the only southern U.S. senator to remain loyal to the Union during the Civil War, the first U.S. president to be impeached, and upon his return to the Senate became the only person ever to serve in that body after their presidency. Born in North Carolina, Johnson later moved to Greeneville, Tennessee, where the life he built with his wife, Eliza McCardle, is interpreted by the National Park Service.
