Man this video really resonated with me! I myself started my cybersecurity journey the same way I got an industry certification reversed engineered specific roles and I got to work. Months later I was offered a Senior Info Security Analyst position with a sign on bonus. Sharing your journey truly helps others it is the lords work. In the midst of transitioning into tech I also started to study the Bible with my wife. That is when it all became clear as I got closer to God everything I did became prosperous.
That's an incredible journey! Congratulations on your achievements and the positive changes in your life. The combination of tech skills and spiritual growth is powerful.
Seeing each other in these spaces is so important. I had an interview for a technical role. The head of their IT department is a black woman. I was so happy and relieved to see that. Even if I don't get the role, I am so grateful. Just to see someone like me in these positions makes me feel like I belong in these spaces. It really broke down some mental barriers for me. I say that to say thank you to you too, Cyrus. Wishing you peace and continued success.
Representation matters! It's incredible how seeing someone like you in a position can inspire and uplift. Keep breaking down those barriers, and best of luck on your journey!
I feel the same about this podcast...a single mom from South Africa. Its such a great platform as a support and motivation to be what I want to be. Thank you.
This is a great candidate for an interview, great choice on putting him on the show. He seems extremely intelligent and like he had a lot to offer, I wish he spoke more during the interview.
First saw my Naija 🇳🇬🇳🇬 bro on Beez’s channel so I’m happy to see him interviewed here again. Beautiful faith, tenacity, and grit intertwined into the nuances of tech, specifically the field I’m interested in (GRC/Cybersecurity). Great interview as usual, Cyrus & team! 🔥
Excellent interview, I learned so much. I lost faith with being black in tech. I’ve only made $40,000 a year even being the primary lead desktop support tech for 20 yrs. Myself and other blacks were pushed to do the work while others (primarily white males) were encouraged to take promotions over us. Your interviews are giving me hope that I & others can get beyond that threshold to a respectful salary in IT 😊.
You've been doing this for 20yrs and only made 40k/yr? What made you stay in help desk support or the same company so long? I think the key is once you get that initial experience, is after a year or so, get another cert and apply for another job, up your income 20-35%, rinse and repeat. Thats what worked for me anyways.
I'm glad the interview brought you hope! Your skills and experience are valuable, and I hope you achieve the recognition and compensation you deserve in IT.
@@DistrictGentleman good question and good advise. The first 10 years was a corporate job right after getting a CIS degree. I remember everything being great at least for about 5 yrs. Then management started putting people that needed to be managed in managing positions. I should have left then, but feeling over worked and overwhelmed with life I stayed and battled the drama until being laid-off. The next 10 years was working for the government, similar things happening. Things start out great, but then eventually you see the writing on the wall. Long story short even with evidence of what was happening to some many. The union would not help, so I left the state.
Man listen! One of the best interviews I've watched hands down. I might be a little boased, because I studying to get into Cyber securiry too haha. But I wrote down so many gems!I worm as a help desk tech apprentice basically, but there are aspects of my job that are part of cyber secruity. One thing I am doing is doubling down on becoming really profecient in those areas and how we can better protect our clients. Ill present questions and ask questions to be answered by my team and other department. And keep. Alog of the results to put on my resume! #trustgodanddoyourbest!
Love the enthusiasm! It's fantastic that you're actively incorporating cybersecurity aspects into your help desk role. Keep asking those insightful questions and showcasing your contributions. Trust in the process, and best of luck on your journey!
Cyrus, I think (we've) always been interested in tech but always misinformed with the requirements, a platform to learn and not many places for us to gain particular experiences. To see people like us breaking tech tradition on a high level is inspiring and motivating. I'm 51 and retired, and I'm eager to start.
That's fantastic! Age is just a number, and it's never too late to dive into tech. Embrace the journey and enjoy the learning process. Your eagerness is inspiring!
This was such a great interview. I recently started a cybersecurity training course(not sure how I stumbled upon it, but hey!!😂) I'm so excited to see how far I can go! Also, I don't blame anyone from withholding their careers. I'm a nurse; my career isn't fancy(no one cares)😂😂
That's awesome! Best of luck with your cybersecurity training course. And hey, being a nurse is incredibly important and impactful, so props to you for that!
Hi Cyrus! I have a question for you (sorry if you answered it in the video, I haven't finished it yet but wanted to ask you personally :) I watched a Course Careers testimonial you uploaded a year ago, and in that you mentioned that you always recommend the Technology Sales course over the IT course but may make an exception for someone wanting to go the Cybersecurity route. Well that's exactly what I'm planning to pursue! I'm all set to be enrolled into WGU for their Bachelors in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, but want to take the Course Careers IT program first and land an entry-level position before starting my degree program. My plan is to get all of my certifications the WGU program offers in the first six months of the program and add them to my resume along with my IT experience from my entry-level job and hopefully land a 6-figure Cybersecurity position by the end of the year! My question is have you done more research into the IT program course careers offers, and would you recommend that be the one I take over the Technology Sales and Data Analytics course that they now offer as well?
Hey! I would recommend CourseCareers IT course for someone who has no experience or skill set at all in cybersecurity. But if you have a skill set and maybe certifications, then I would suggest Leveled Careers. Here's the discount code for the 2 boot camp so you can choose which suits you better. CourseCareers is self-paced. Most finish it in 1 month. They offer tech sales, UX/UI, tech recruiting, and customer success roles with an average entry salary of $65k-$95k. They are partnered with tech companies, so they can help you get interviews with companies looking to hire their graduates. They also have paid internships while you wait to get hired. They only offer courses for people in Canada and the USA. They’re just $449 WITH MY DISCOUNT LINK: coursecareers.com/cyrusharbin For those who want a career as a sales engineer or in cybersecurity, but at a more affordable price, I recommend Leveled Careers bootcamp. Great question! Adding knowledge of networking, basic security concepts, and perhaps certifications like CompTIA Security+ could be beneficial for a BDR looking to transition into cybersecurity. Best of luck on your journey!
Hey! Here are my recommendations for getting a 6 figure AI tech career! Both are in high demand. Option 1: The first option is AI Tech Sales (this is what I’ve done most of my career in tech). This is in high demand, pays the highest salaries overtime! bit.ly/TechIsTheNewBlackIna Option 2: If you don’t want to do tech sales, check out the AI Manual QA bootcamp! This is for those who want a 6 figure career that has the best work life balance. You also can do “job stacking” which allows you to make much more money sooner! bit.ly/TechIsTheNewBlackIna
Regarding the dating question: I totally understand not feeling comfortable mentioning your job at early stages for privacy/personal reasons. You can describe what you do on a high level (without giving an actual title, get creative). And if they ask how much you make don't give a specific number. And if they press for more just say you can't really go into detail for privacy reasons. Or just get really good at changing the subject lol. But if you LIE about your job and say one thing and I find out down the line it's something completely different... I'd assume you're trying to hide something for nefarious reasons like you're a con man, married, etc. And I'd just block you altogether without a second thought.
That's a significant journey. Remember, each step contributes to your growth and resilience. Keep pushing forward, and opportunities aligned with your goals will come your way!
We’ve helped over a thousand people get 6 figure tech careers. I stream twice a week with people who say that the bootcamps I recommend to them changed their life…and you’re focused on the fact that I fund the platform and pay my team to make all of this possible with the referral kickback I get from the bootcamps?? You do realize I pay my videographers, production manager, production assistant, graphic designer, and 5 virtual assistants with the money? You would not be learning from this guest without it. But you want me to ask people to work for free??
