Join me for a mushroom hunting adventure in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Black trumpets, hedgehogs, lobster and the unusual Russell’s bolete are discussed. See the Northwoods mushroom habitat and what flowers are blooming to help with the timing of wild edible mushroom fruiting. Explore the different ecosystems with me…bogs, fens, pine and oak forests to find fungi treasures. Watch my Rhodotus palmatus quest.
How can I tell if the buttons I am finding are going to keep growing or if I should pick them now? Tonight was epic even after leaving a lot of small buttons in the woods!!!!!! Also what fruits right before chants?
Watch the precipitation forecasts. If rain is predicted buttons will keep growing. The only edible species that pops up before chanterelles in summer is the chicken of the woods. Russulas typically pop a week before chants start in my experience but be careful…there is one of those called “the sickener” for good reason. They are an indicator species though not really thought of as edible with a few exceptions by most people. If rain has been plentiful chants come up about the same time, same trees every year.
Thank you so much! Just trying to learn the indicators of different habitats. Red Russula were just starting in Columbia co, last weekend, but did find cinnabar. The coral was still White, and ghost pipes just starting . around the chants I'm finding here, the coral is turning tan, ghost pipes are old. All high in the hills!!!
I have hunted the area you are talking about. I find hedgehogs and black trumpets first week of Sept along with the start of hen of the woods (around oak).
Just like everyone has their favorite baseball player.. Tattooed Granny is my favorite shroomer! Thank you for being my secret mentor this season, and last!!!!!🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄
I appreciate the content I've learned so much from you. Any luck on the chants lately? It was madness for a bit, now I could barely find enough to feed the addiction. I'm still green so not sure if I'm looking in the wrong spot, or is it just because it's drier than a popcorn fart in The kettle moraine.
The chants had only a brief season this year due to the drought. The last two weeks in July are typically their peak season. In the lower half of the state they associate with oak. Cinnabars should still be around.

WMS is having all their big forrays up there right now! Sad I am missing out!
I usually attend at least one but went up early this year instead. They are marvelous.
