I agree. But it is also a testament to the pain in his voice of the Johnny Cash version that takes it home. Even Trent Reznor has stated that he wrote the song, but hearing Cash sing it, he no longer feels he owns it. That is a powerful statement in itself.
What always makes me cry watching this is the look of absolute sorrow in June's eyes as she stands watching him during this in their home/museum that is crumbling around them. Adding in the fact that she died a month and he died 3 months after filming it just makes this song so much more poetic, and completely changes the meaning from the original 9 Inch Nails version. It's no longer just about hurting your self and those around you with your drug use. But a man who battled that through out his life sitting at the end of it all, as everything he built in his life is literal crumbling into dust and disrepair and wishing he could change all he regrets. His wishes after death also adds to it since he wanted his home and museum bulldozed, so all that was left was a literal "empire of dirt".

It's interesting that you describe this as "the realist form of music," because that was exactly what producer Rick Rubin was going for. Johnny had been fired by RCA records (I know, right? Why?) and Rick Rubin, who produced metal records, wanted to produce this album for him. He took Johnny out of his comfort zone and forced him to make songs with just his voice and his guitar. This is the result.
RCA let Cash go because of his age and health. They didn't think that they could get another album out of him and have any real 'quality' to it. So, Rubin came up with the idea of Cash singing one of Nine Inch Nails songs that could take advantage of the slower pace and 'shaky voice' of Cash at the time because of just the lyrics. Result.... Instant Classic and RCA left with a huge shit-sandwich to eat because of it as the song took off on the charts.
Just a correction: Rubin was primarily a rap & hip hop producer. He came up in the New York hip hop scene, with LL Cool J and Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, and founded Def Jam records. Slayer was his only really big name metal act.
Lead singer for NIN who wrote this song to this day, says Johnnys cover blew his original song out of the water. Doesn’t matter what genre you sing as an artist from Hip Hop to Folk, Rock to New Wave...everyone knew and respected Cash. You gotta really do something special for that to happen. “ Hero’s get remembered, but legends never die”

It was a remake from a NIN song but imo Johnny's just tore at your soul so much more than the original and that was Amazing in its own right but I just liked this version better. An older man, who didn't always make the right choices in life and hurt the ones he loved really taking a look back at his life.

Johnny Cash was the definition of rock'roll and one of the most honorable icons there's ever been to find. At the end of this video, when he close the piano lid and gently strokes his hands over it, is for me one of the sadest and heartbreaking scenes in the history of music. That moment was the end of his career and his life - and he knew it. I cry every time I see it. God I miss him!
Trent Reznor (lead vocalist of NIN) talked about how this cover was really well done. Johnny had his demons and he spent the vast majority of his life battling them, most of the time losing. His addiction to heroin was tearing his life apart and yet his wife stood by him and when she passed I think Johnny was terrified to be alone with his demons and his heart couldn’t take it. I heard both versions of the song when they were released on the air years apart. I am a huge NIN fan and have always respected Johnny Cash. Him doing a cover of this song and putting so much of himself into it was just incredible. He sings it from a different place than Trent does and the fact that this song held so much in common between these two artists that are so different and yet so similar is a credit to both musicians. The JC version of it always gets me misty, and I love both versions.
Every song from his six album release with legendary producer Rick Rubin on American Recordings is a masterpiece. Hurt is just one of many. This video is one of the best music videos I have ever seen.

I heard both versions of the song when they were released on the air years apart. I am a huge NIN fan and have always respected Johnny Cash. Him doing a cover of this song and putting so much of himself into it was just incredible. He sings it from a different place than Trent does and the fact that this song held so much in common between these two artists that are so different and yet so similar is a credit to both musicians. The JC version of it always gets me misty, and I love both versions.
