      I think that's because, obviously, the writer of the movie didn't know that JD would be so loved and people would seek deeper. However the musical had the advantage of knowing the audience and what they wanted to happen, so they did. They made JD die with integrity, he was insane, yes, but he made up for it and stopped the deaths, the only way he knew how, by taking himself out of the equation

      in the musical she literally said 'say hi to god' and 'my date for the pep rally kinda blew... me off' so like?? she did NOT say she loved him and would miss him. stop hating on the musical for literally no reason at all. both movie and musical veronica were badass and winona ryder and the director of the movie LOVE the musical

    I honestly love both the movie version and the musical version of Heathers, but for different reasons. The movie shows how truly fucked up everything was and really hit home on the abusive relationship Veronica and JD had. JD turned out to be crazy and she ignored all of the warning signs he gave off throughout the movie. However, the musical showed that JD wasn't a complete psychopath and that he was redeemable in some ways. Veronica truly cared about him, maybe even go as far as to say she loved him. I really enjoy both versions, and the musical has some really catchy ass songs if you haven't checked it out yet.

    • @emi6082
      @emi6082 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Yes I agree I too enjoy the musical and the movie for different reasons. Like you said the Movie really shows just how toxic (and straight up abusive-) their relationship was. And the way the movie is makes it seem like JD was just ALWAYS crazy. And ugh this is gonna sound super fucked up but..I kinda liked the crazy side. Idk that’s just my opinion I’ve always liked crazy characters (Like Monica from “Market of Monsters.” It’s a good series you should check it out if you like thriller books.)
      As for the musical they make JD a bit more...sympathetic the audience immediately feels for him but at the same time it doesn’t excuse his actions which is why I liked it so much. And I agree the songs are so damn catchy! But the sad part is I have “Dead Girl Walking” stuck in my head and if I sing that out loud...😬
      Oh and also 60th like 😆

    I honestly believe that JD was a hostage to his own greed and dark view on life and apparently became a victim of his own ways as he no longer had Veronica in his life as well as his mother. It's rather saddening if you think about it that there are people out there who feel unloved and that when they do find a source of happiness it's gone because they had as JD put it, "gross and icky feelings unable to face"

      That's the thing. 1980 - 1990's comedy came from pain and misery, but the deaths are either random, or not taken as seriously. The musical portrays him as a less of a psychopath and seems to treat her like the light if a dark tunnel. In the original he didn't care. Humor back then included a girl having feelings for another while the other clearly doesn't care about her. In this case, Jason Dean was using Veronica to satisfy his hopes on committing a mass genocide. It's called a dark comedy show for a reason

    I prefer the movie version. I like the coldness and the complete lack of emotion. It shows that Veronica was fed up with JD and him dying is the only solution and in JD shows his complete insanity and god complex he had. The musical tried to make him and their relationship way too romantic and powerful while that was not the point. (I still like a lot of songs from the musical though)

      I feel like although both are amazing in their own right, the way the musical portrays Veronica's reactions and JD's obsessive love for her is more realistic. JD, is INSANE and some of the musicals attempts to make him more likable kinda failed. But his obsessive behavior over Veronica makes sense for his insanity and Veronica, is so much more empathetic and remorseful than JD so her wanting him to live makes total sense. She felt bad about Heather Chandler and the jocks too and she really did have romantic feelings for him, so that state of panic thinking that she can turn things around is completely human and real unlike how the movie plays it up to Veronica pleased at the death to her first love and first heartbreak.

    • @hahaohno329
      @hahaohno329 7 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      Grace Lenore It kinda pisses me off that people like JD because he's hot, like really now. And, in my opinion they were able to make him a more likable character because he seemed more human, thus making him more relatable. And plus, how can you not like him? If you don't then...cool, but I personally felt sorry for him, seeing as he'd been through a lot and actually had feelings and suddenly just...died. But I don't know, that's your opinion.

    If not for the fact that he blows himself up, the way he was speaking implied that he planned on doing the same or worse to another school. Kinda like an evil version of the 70s Bruce Banner, instead of walking around to help people, he walks town to town to cause trouble.

      Rowan Jin it was easier to see why Veronica actually loved him ya know. They made him less of a psychopath originally and more of one for her. They made him more of a misguided teenager who just wanted to make thingsbetter, while in the movie he's just batshit nope. Like the Joker but a teen almost? Guess that's why I love the character so much.

    • @urmominc904
      @urmominc904 7 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      JD in this movie is more realistic. The JD in the musical, while sharing his charm, is less of a sociopath and more ... romanticized? I like the musical, I like the movie, but what the musical forgets is that JD isn't some angsty teenager that has a kink for bombs; he's a deranged sociopath that genuinely takes pleasure out of violence and death. This scene just goes to show that Veronica and JD were less in love and more out of it, you know? Like they were showing their true colors. JD made Veronica a better person because she realized how horrible of one he really was and how her angst teenage problems ceased to exist in comparison (wishing the Heathers died, etc., etc. then seeing it actually happen).

    • @kaitlynthompson5609
      @kaitlynthompson5609 7 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      econaur I totally agree with what you say, but I also find, personally, that the romanticism of JD's character placed emphasis on how crazy he is. The way Veronica responds when ever he "serenades" her shows just how manipulative and mind controlling he is. The attachment that the audience has makes them question their moral code by sympathizing with a psychopath responsible for the death of multiple people; it makes the audience ponder if the character is so manipulative that you empathize with his "self-sacrifice". That's my personal opinion...I truly see it both ways though.

    Personally I think that the ending is a masterpiece and not as cold and heartless as everyone thinks. JD has a choice at the end to carry out his plans of blowing up the school or killing himself, and he kills himself, I think because he realizes that ending all the lives in that school won’t take away his deep rooted childhood trauma that’s making him be this way. When he shows Veronica I think perhaps there could be hesitance in her, but not sympathy. She knows he has to die for all the pain he caused her, and all the lives he took. But I think they really connect in those last few scenes and I don’t think it’s cold at all. I think JD cared about her. I mean, after all, he went to say his final goodbyes to her. I think he does realize the pain he caused her. Why else would he show her that he was about to kill himself? Not sure how to explain it. Anyone else feel this way?

    I love both the movie and the musical, but they really feel like completely different stories. I love how the movie portrays them as two strong personalities locked in a power struggle. Veronica doesn't have any strong values at first, she's disgusted by the bullying and fakes but still joins in. It's only when fighting other strong personalities like Heather Chandler and JD that she finds her own strength. JD is both attracted to and jealous of Veronica's own power, and tries to dominate her whenever she gets out from under his thumb. This ending is him finally admitting that she beat him at his own game.

      i actually really like the idea of the lines "our love is god" and "say hi to god" in the movie. maybe not in the same context as they were in the musical, but it could had been a good tool to show jd being manipulative. they could have had veronica and jd repeating "our love is god" back and forth to each other throughout the movie (usually after they do some bad shit like kill someone, jd always saying it first, lowkey pressuring veronica into saying it too so she thinks she loves him back). then at the end, his last words are "our love is god", but she replies, "say hi to god," in the most dry, sarcastic manner so it represents that their love is dead.

    Calm down about that movie and the musical, I think they both made different points. Musical JD is more likable as a character so more people sympathize with him. I don't think he was necessarily in love with Veronica, but wanted the idea. The idea of everything being beautiful, and a place to live in. Somebody who genuinely cared for other people, and didn't ridicule him. Movie JD is much more manipulative and not made out to be as much of a likable character. I think both of them have a charm though. A clever wit and words that make you go along with the plan. That's the point. JD is the antihero, he can't win. It's a moral compass. But that small part of you wishes it was different. In the end no other ending would be justified. JD is a killer. But he is a complex character. That's what makes him interesting. The way he was presented in the musical is very different than the movie. The ending is still essentially the same, he *CAN'T* be with Veronica. He got what he deserved. I don't think it's as much the musicals fault of romanticizing JD as it is the fandom's fault.
    And it could be fair to say that he didn't love Veronica and Veronica didn't love him. It's just they wanted something.
    JD is still manipulative, and a psycho.

It doesn't have the ending, "we can be beautiful" moral. It's more of a,"we're fucked up. society is fuck up moral." Therefore it is less emotional because the characters don't necessarily believe in a better reality waiting to be discovered. They're more in the now.

It was more romantic, yes, but I do not believe that they made everyone “sweet angelic babies who are just misunderstood and damaged uwu”. They probably even made H. Chandler more horrible and less humane by not having her raped by college boys and gave her self confidence that when the movie made her have very, very little self confidence. H. Duke still had bulimia but it is less pronounced in the musical.

    Though I love the musical, I definitely think the film portrayed the characters in a more corrupted and interesting light. JD always thought he was doing everything right, he believed that society was so much better with him killing away anyone who lay a hand on him, Veronica and anyone else. He knew exactly how to control and manipulate Veronica even till the end. The musical portrays a more romantic and funny side to JD and while I love that, I think he much suits an antagonist who prides himself with the death of others who wrong him. I love both the musical and the movie but the movie definitely portrays the characters better.

  • @alexisinman5328

    I prefer the movie WAY more than the musical... Maybe because i saw the movie fist idk... But the musical romanticises their relationship too much, like in the movie JD had an infatuation with Veronica, but he didn't show as much emotion towards her as he did in the musical, the musical makes it out to seem as if they were in love or "could've been" in love but in all reality JD is a sociopath who most definitely cannot feel love like the rest of us. The relationship was doomed from the start, there was no hope. JD never actually loved Veronica, did Veronica love him? Maybe? But in the musical she also had wayyy too many feelings towards him, in the movie she was smarter and seemed to be able to grasp that everything in her teenage years was just hormone fueled angst, and that their thing wasn't love, They were just teenagers messing around, but then it got serious as people started dying, and she felt trapped. In the musical it seems as if she's fine with this situation in 'Our love is God' but really she was never fine with it. Shes glad that he dies because she is then freed from him and the troubles that he caused her. It was not a romance as the musical made it seem. The movie was more realistic.

    I think in the end, JD did love veronica in his own way. Maybe not really since he was a psychopath, but I think he "fell in love" with the idea that veronica understands him so much and that they're so alike and that no one else understands. Since he doesn't exactly have a real discerning for right and wrong, it would be extremely difficult to say that JD loved veronica because it'd be hard to figure out his exact definition of love. But he seemed to love his mother very much, which could show he had feelings?
    Anyways, I like this scene for the sole reason of veronica's reaction: she doesn't have one. She couldn't care less. Which means, if you think about it, did the murders, that she and JD commited, get to her head? Because regardless of how awful Kurt, Ram, and Heather C were, a life is still a life, and a human who understood that concept would have some sort of regret or feel remorse in some form for a life that's gone. But she didn't. And I love that concept. The musical was very emotional with the death, which was the way that a normal veronica would have reacted, but the movie just further shines light on the fact that veronica is not normal at all. I love both though. Musical and Movie. It's nice to see different interpretations of these characters.

    I love the movie and the musical for different reasons, the musical is (to me at least) more relatable and explains how Veronica ended up a heather and explains her more as a victim then a villain it also makes jd seem like less of a prick the movie however makes jd crazy and makes it seem like Veronica knows what she is doing, it is more about wanting love but also vengeance movie Veronica was smart and wanted to live in the edge she saw the worst in most things musical Veronica cared deeply about everyone at her school and wasn't as strong she was motivated by love and friendship. These two characters are the same person but I don't find them comparable

    To me, this one makes me more sad than the musical death. Mostly because of Veronica’s emotionless reaction. JD loved her, but she realized he was a monster, not loving him back, even in his death.

    It’s sad that he dies (because he’s hot) but I think this movie has a really nice ending. Most stories, you assume the main character won’t die. They’ll all live happily ever after. It’s nice to see a change where the person who should die, does actually die

    People really romanticize this situation way more than they need too. We need to remember this was NOT a healthy, loving relationship. It was pure manipulation, lies, and business I would say on JD's part.
    I'd say the movie represents that it's not really about their relationship well.

    • @androdeiculus9712
      @androdeiculus9712 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the only reason people "romanticize" this is because of the musical. The musical made you sympathise and/or relate to JD, especially in the song "Freeze Your Brain".

      I get what you're saying; if he's a sociopath, it's not necessarily entirely his fault that he's like that, because his brain cannot process the difference between right and wrong. And yeah, he killed people but it's because there's something wrong with his brain and he couldn't stop himself if he tried.

    I personally feel like the movie version is more emotional than the musical. They’re two different types of emotions, that’s all. The way veronica pulls out a cigarette for JD to light by blowing himself up, and her not saying a word throughout it, makes it so emotionally intense in my opinion.

    • @andresnavarro5978
      @andresnavarro5978 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me its the premise or theme of a movie that should dictate what the charecters will or will not do, in this case the ending make sense for this particular premise, you can still see veronica crying in the film but shes still holding her tears because she wants to be strong, that's emotional to me just as the musical is but it's just different kind of emotional and I personally think the movie is better structured and sticks to its premise way better, some subtle scenes like facial expressions fly over people's heads, this scene gives you more hints of what they feel instead of just having a manipulative scene, that's more interesting to me

    Not gonna lie, I kinda feel bad for JD. He might be the antagonist and crazy psychotic, but he's basically also the definition of a scary childhood, let me go down my list: He was neglected by his father, he witnessed his mother dying, and he before coming to sherwood Ohio, who knows how many times JD has had to move, plus at Westerberg, he gets bullied and there's always a part of saying "Well, he's not wrong." JD might be the antagonist but I don't think he deserved to suffer through his childhood, if anything his dad is the real antagonist, if he didn't neglect his own son, JD wouldn't be a murderer. JD has gone through a lot of scary, devastating, and sad times, if you ask me he didn't deserve suffering when he was a child besides look what happened to his hand, and in the end, he basically sacrifices himself so the school wouldn't blow up. He may be a murderer but its actually theoried that he had schizophrenia ao i dont blame him. Anyone else agree?
