    This is a very poor solution considering they were approached by a private rail company to build a cog-rail from the FrontRunner station in South Jordan all the way up to Alta for a billion dollars. Additionally, the company said they were going to cost share with UDOT. Its a failure on UDOT and needs to be looked at.
    Hopefully they dont make the same mistake downtown and get working on the Rio Grande Plan!

    I'm a 20+ year resident of Salt Lake City, currently serve on Salt Lake City's Planning Commission, and former member of the Central Wasatch Commission's Stakeholder Advisory Council. Thanks so much for doing this video. One thing that was missed was the fact that some very influential people own the land where the gondola's base station and park and ride would be located and have heavily lobbied the Utah Legislature to support the gondola. Additionally, the ski resorts have exercised an inordinate amount of influence and are blocking efforts to implement vehicle tolling in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons.

    Great episode. I'm a Utah local, and I used to be pro-gondola. I ski and rock climb in the different canyons here, and I got stuck in a 4 hour traffic jam during a blizzard trying to get out of little cottonwood last year. I think that's when I became pro-gondola. I've never heard the stop the gondola argument put together so well, I'm convinced. I would love to take a bus up to the different resorts, the service is just so unreliable...

    I don't understand why they can't just build a train up the canyon and close the roads to anything other than bus/emergency vehicle traffic.

      @spencerimre Thanks for watching! I think a train may check a lot of the same boxes as the gondola does in this conversation. Julia makes the argument in this interview that the carrying capacities of the destinations at the top of the road (the ski resorts), have essentially been met. I find it hard to disagree with her there.
      Don't get me wrong, I love gondolas. I love trains, etc, etc... But I think when it comes to areas that are essentially park lands, (think our national parks, popular state parks, other recreation areas), it is entirely possible to allow so many people in that we can "love a place to death".
      Solutions we discussed such as timed entry, requiring vehicle reservations (resorts sort of do this already, but it could be improved), variable tolling, and increased bus service (potentially with priority lanes) are all solutions that would disrupt the landscape in the canyon the least. It just so happens that they are pretty cost effective to test out as well.

      @@TransitTangents have you considered the effect of huge sales of mega passes? I think a much simpler way to solve this overcrowding problem at large is to simply limit how many season passes and day passes can be bought. The fewer people have access to the mountain, the less crowding.

      @@TransitTangents The mountains are no where near capacity when it comes to the number of people who can ski. A gondola is a dumb solution, but allowing traffic to only flow in one direction at a time with a dedicated bus lane would actually work.

    DOT's responsibility is to all movement of people not just roads. And it's a bunch of towers. Visually no different from windmills. So i don't really buy that argument. Now I do agree that we should impose limits on the resorts who lease federal lands to cap the uphill capacity so it's less dangerous to be on the hill.

      Thanks for watching! The visual argument you bring up is totally fair to see either way. I can understand both viewpoints there. But it seems like you and Julia both agree that limiting the amount of people headed up to the resorts should be considered, and timing when those trips can happen (timed entry similar to what many National Parks now use, etc...) That with improved bus service could solve the problem on it's own essentially eliminating the need for the gondola. A win win.

      There are other places to climb in salt lake, there aren't really other places to ski in salt lake. The resorts are no where near capacity, and although a gondola is a silly solution, a train or dedicated bus lanes would actually work. If you limit the amount of people who can go up the mountains, you will effectively ban locals from being able to use the resorts because tourists are much more willing to spend a lot of money than locals are.
      Also if you have dedicated bus lanes or a train, it can have many more stops than a gondola can.

    There is such a thing as a Bag Gondola. It's called the IFS Cloud Cable Car (Formerly called the Emirates Air Line, London Cable Car, and Pokémon Cable Car)

    I don’t know tbh. In the meantime, it’s probably more efficient for folks to ski north. The park and ride to snow basin and powder mtn leaves straight from the Ogden station and yes they can get busy, but nothing like cottonwood.

    Im not a local what a lot of the opposition doesn't consider is the road only goes to the resorts. Udot already subsidizes the ski resorts. And every trucking company that doesnt pay its fair share. I think running a toll to reduce the road traffic and help fund alternate modes. But allowing more buses and reducing the car traffic is a better solution imo

      Thanks for watching! Good point. Vast majority of trips go to the resorts. There is also access to many trailheads accessed by others going hiking, rock climbing, xc skiing, etc... But your point still stands!

    Build a train on that road with an emergency vehicle only lane next to it and close it to all other traffic. And have the resort owners pay for half of it, and have them lease the ROW from the public. They can operate the train and make money from it, too. The public owns the ROW, and the resort owns and operates the train.
