Death Magnetic is an Underrated Album imo, the problem is the production of the Album that it is so loud but in the vinyl version this album is a Banger.
Indeed :-) For reference, Guitar Hero 3 tracks of the album have little to no compression. There's a comment by @Wagoo that has TH-cam comparison of waveforms / compression for GH3 vs retail.
Death Magnetic is right up there with the 4 80s albums imo, I'd probably even put it ahead of Kill Em All since James's vocal delivery has gotten better over time imo. Once I saw the notification for this reaction I immediately started humming the intro to myself at work. I hope you had a great experience last night and again TO-NIGHT😉 at the Mayday tour! I'm sure you'll agree with Kirk Hammett's statement bout Pau after seeing them live cuz she does kick maximum butt in person lol!
Fixxxer is a great song from Reload. Super underrated. I really liked Death Magnetic, Unforgiven 3 has one of the best kirk hammett solo in my opinion. Broken beat and scarred is an amazing tune too, day that never comes is a banger and this song is absolute fire so I'm glad you are coming back to Metallica. My favourite album is AJFA. Song's like Blackened, Eye of the Beholder, Dyer's Eve, Frayed ends of Sanity, Harvester of Sorrow and of course One are all amazing tunes from AJFA and I wish they would play all these songs live more 🤘
Load and ReLoad have plenty of good songs on them. They just aren’t good songs if you’re hoping for an 80s Metallica record. It’s a completely different mindset, a focus on more than anything else (a weird thing for a metal band to do, admittedly). While I could probably ditch half the songs on each record and maaaaaaaybe squeeze it below 80 minutes, there’s definitely an albums worth of excellent songs there.
I've gone through the same ride with Metallica that you did, and I haven't heard these newer songs either. I get to listen for the first time too when the requests come up!
Saw this tour in Cleveland at the “Q”. My ears are still recovering. It was quite a show! Love the reaction and analysis as always. Check out Kirk’s new solo EP when you can. I’m going to start giving my own score. lol. Jk. Ok. Just this once. 9.1.
After listening to your Judas Priest story. Funny thing is Painkiller is right after Ram it Down where they learned from their mistakes and corrected. It's literally my favorite album of their's believe it or not. Hopefully someone will request songs off of it. Also, their most recent album Fire Power is amazing.

I just listened to the album the other night watching another reaction channel listen to the whole album for the first time and re thought my comment here that hey maybe Dave would enjoy it. I totally get why people don't like load and reload. They aren't good Metallica albums, because they aren't metal. But as hard rock albums... they're really good. It's always been my thought if they released those albums under a different name or wrote the songs for another band to perform, it might not have been panned so hard by fans.

I'm a huge Priest fan and the song "Painkiller" gets all the hype but the whole album is great.....you gotta do it man.
It makes me so happy seeing someone who essentially banished Metallica during the 90’s like many others go back to the newer stuff and be surprised at how good it is, death magnetic is such an amazing album equally on par with the first 4. I’d recommend either The Judas Kiss or My Apocalypse next from this album, they’re time machines straight back to the 80’s
Another waited reaction from you, because as you hate the load era which I love a lot, I’m always wanted old heads that were Metallica fan till 89, I still feel like they are family behind of the ones that kept listening to them. I really love that you liked it, you need to react the whole album, and hardwired too!. Peace to you my friend, till next Metallica reaction.
Good evening from New England..This entire album is a return to form for the mighty METALLICA...Cyanide is another banger that Harkins back to ..And Justice...maybe do some more songs from this album...Actually I'm one of the very few pll that liked the compressed sound of Justice...Peace from the Northeast..
He’s done The Day That Never Comes and All Nightmare Long. I agree with you though…Cyanide for sure, Suicide & Redemption, Broken Beat and Scarred…album was full of great riffs. I also like Unforgiven III but I’m not sure Dave would care for it.
Cool that you have liked All Nightmare Long and TWJYL. The whole album is full of great songs. The End Of The Line is my personal favourite Metallica song actually and it would be the next song after what you just reacted to.
David, you have no idea how happy ‘tallica fans like me were to hear this back in 2008. It had been EIGHT years since Metallica had recorded any songs with solos. EIGHT! When you tried to predict where the solo was going I laughed to myself. A little advice: if you react to any St. Anger song, don’t try to predict where the solo goes…they have none. 😢 You and I must have discovered Metallica about the same time, because I had listened to every album from Kill… to Justice by the time the black album came out. RTL is your favorite, but Justice is mine. That being said, “Fight Fire with Fire” was their first song I ever heard. My brother recorded it for me and said, “Listen to this”. Mind blown. I went to get RTL so I could hear the rest, but it wasn’t at my local Walmart. I saw Justice was there and decided to get that instead since it was the newest release and see how they evolved. Good lord, I love that album to this day. Finally got Lightning, then Puppets, heard Garage Days and bought Kill… just before their new album dropped. The new album was the Black Album. I’m with you, it’s a good album, but not what I wanted from them. Load and Reload are OK, but again, not worth listening to over and over. I rarely listen to their nineties stuff, but everything else I listen to from time to time. I even liked St Anger because I was sick of the polished sound of the nineties albums, it was a relief to hear Metallica heavy, angry and aggressive again. Sorry for the length, but one question: what’s your opinion of the black album’s mix? IMO, it’s the best sounding album they ever recorded. I would like to hear all their albums with a similar sound to it. The guitars are heavy, the drums are very clear and punchy and the bass is actually audible!
It's extremely red label ready as far as the mix goes, no tweeking needed. No need to adjust anything on the EQ of whatever you are using to listen to the album.
Painkiller is easily the GOAT heavy metal album in my humble opinion, there's just not bad songs on that record. And I was so surprised hearing you didn't like Ram it Down, I would love to see your re-reaction to Blood Red Skies, it's been a while, maybe you'd enjoy it 30 years later, it's an absolute banger!
Couple things to keep in mind: All songs from Load & Reload were written around the same time, and recorded during the same sessions. Even Though reload was released a few years later, it was all recorded and in the can in 1994/95. So its natural that if you don't like one, you wont like the other much more. The other thing is that bands that play with this type of intensity MUST make a few records here n there which allow them to have spots in their shows where they can relax a bit. To play at break neck speed for 2 1/2 hrs, especially into old age, isnt feasible. Thats why Slayers retired and Megadeth gets newer and younger members every other fucking tour. Changing the pace isnt always done to keep current.
I'm a big Metallica fan. one of my favorite bands all time. In my top 5 for sure. But yeah I was disappointed Load and even more with Reload. Load I liked some songs, but they were just not the same. But I loved what they did with the Death Magnetic and Hardwired to Self Destruct Albums. I've been listening to both albums alot lately when I get ready for work every morning. It wakes me up! 🤘
To be fair 'Reload' wasn't really a continuation down a certain direction. It was the remaining songs from the 'Load' recording sessions where they were recording 27 songs but decided to split them so they could put something out and tour in the summer. In that way, it can be seen as Load leftovers, although it does feature the 2 songs of the 27 that they play most often live; Fuel and The Memory Remains. I personally think there's a great 12-song, 70-min album hiding in there, just not one that 'sounds like Metallica'.
I am pretty sure that if the expectation on Load and ReLoad wasn't that you are receiving more of the same like Ride The Lightning or Master of Puppets and if these albums were released from a different band you would bang to these till that day. How can you not like "Fuel" for example? ReLoad was the first cassette I received as gift to my birthday when I was a kid. The album was just released and I really liked it. There are quite many other songs that deserve credits aside of the popular "Mama Said", "Unforgiven 2", "Until It Sleeps" and "King Nothing". I really like "Fixxxer", "Devil's Dance" and "Bleeding me" for example. What about the Garage Inc. album? The covers are really good "Turn the Page" is fantastic, there are also many good songs like "It's Electric", "Die, Die my darling", "Whiskey in the Jar". To me only from the St. Anger album all songs sound the same. This is why I don't really like that too. But as an individual song (and if you haven't heard the rest) St. Anger is great. I don't understand that diss to Metallica after the Ride the Lightning. Metallica is legendary with and without Cliff Burton.
Dude I am glad you like this song. Love this album. I am one of those metallica fans that likes all the albums. Give this one a listen. Some killer riffs on this album
I became a fan in 85 and saw them twice on the Justice tour. Justice is my favorite album but any of their first 4 are Fire. I remember hearing enter Sandman for the first time and thought what the hell is this. Like you I stopped listening after Load and Reload but did like some of the covers on Garage Inc. and I even gave St Anger a try, I hated the drum tone but there are some decent songs on the album. Death Magnetic was there return to that old Metallica sound and they just built from there with Hardwired. Great reaction like always Dave 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Maybe you can listen songs from this Death Magnetic album too ; they are so OLD Metallica style with songs like : JUDAS' KISS (very 'brutal' & unieq) and MY APOCALYPSE (very thrash & fast) , etc .
If you really want to hear an old MetallicA track from the same album. Listen to My Apocalypse! There is even a riff in that song written by Kirk, that he wrote a long time ago for Exodus but never used it until 2008!
The Ride the lightning is your favorite then you need to react to The Day That Never Ends it of the Deat Megnetic it's basically the same as Fade To Black I love to see your reaction to it
I’m curious to know what you thought about some of the better songs off load/reload (King Nothing, Fuel, The Memory Remains, and some others I can’t think of) did you at least like a few? Or did you hate them all.
It's been so long I honestly do not remember any of the songs off those two albums, especially Reload since I only listened to the whole album once before I smashed the CD.
Your Metallica dropoff sounds like mine, except I prefer Kill em all as my favorite. I consider Master of Puppets their masterpiece, and I think the Justice album is really cool. I got bored with the Black Album after a couple of listens and checked out during the loads. I picked up some of their live stuff, but their newer stuff I listened to didn't hook me. This song was cool, but it is tough to compare to the impact of hearing hit the lights, creeping death, master of puppets, or battery for the 1st time when they were breaking new ground.
The version of this album to listen to was always the rips from Guitar Hero 3. The CD was awful, and the vinyl wasn't great. We are not just talking about compression, we are talking gigantic compression to the point the waveform is just a square brick and in any heavier/louder section everything fizzles away with digital clipping hell. The GH3 rips are perfect. The album got remastered in recent years and is supposed to sound better now (this sounds like the one you're listening to thankfully).. but from what I remember the GH3 rips were still better. There's a great (and ancient) comparison with the original CD and GH3 rip version of "The Day That Never Comes" with the volumes normalised at th-cam.com/video/6Nfqpr3ygSg/w-d-xo.html - if you want to see how truly dreadful the original loudness wars master was :) PS: forget about St. Anger, I only managed to struggle through that album once. Death Magnetic (when not killed by compression) and Hardwired are great albums, though!
I have to be honest St Anger wasn't great, Some kind of monster and sweet Amber were good songs but the rest of the album wasn't great but you can hear then returning to their roots in it. Death Magnetic was superb and I fully recommend you do the whole album for us. Agree with Load and Reload, a couple of songs get in my playlist in isolation but the albums weren't great. Seriously recommend the day that never comes from Death Magnetic. Great review and I was point 3 off guessing your score lol. I'll let you figure out which way lol. Keep it coming brother
For me the best st anger songs were sweet amber, my world and the unnamed feeling. Also the songs from st anger sound waaaay better live than in studio versions
@@chrisblinman9150 That's funny, I have a few songs from St. Anger that I keep coming back to, but Some Kind of Monster is definitely not among them. I can't stand that one. Sweet Amber seems to be the common denominator though. 😅 Apart from that one I also like the title track, Unnamed Feeling, and, oddly enough, All Within My Hands. There is just this raw intensity in these songs that just gets me.
@@simonbrunner3062 hey we all have our own tastes and opinions. As long as we can express ourselves respectfully as we are doing, then happy days. Sweet Amber does seem to go down well with everyone lol. I think we can agree that Metal rules 🤘
Bro, relationship with Metallica was always hate-love thing, but I still have very strong respect for them because they fucking earned it in the past. Too bad they use digital stuff nowdays more than the actual amps - like they did on their hit albums. I think they did lost some of their touch because they went into different venues, but at the end of the day they are still Metallica and their concerts will be based on their first 5 albums and fillers from the other ones. That fact itself speaks volumes. You need to check out "My Apocalypse" from Death Magnetic.
I know you want to find gems, that will rank in the 8s and 9s, but every now and then throw a less than 1 in there. Like Metallica's collaboration with Lou Reed called Lulu. lol
About St. Anger. Well it is much better then Load and Reload, but there is so much on that album that is not Metallica you and i remember. No guitar solo, short lyrics that repeat, no intrumental, sound of drums like you are banging on tin can. Death Magnetic is really turn on point going back, Hardwired great. So basicly we share the same view, but i keep listening.
Metallica occupies a separate shelf in the music library of a true rocker, because their melodies cut into the soul very much. Every fan has their favorite albums from them, and they weigh a lot, because they have an incredible amount of energy and aggression, or musicality and deep feelings.
Metallica are my favourite band, and will be until the day I die….. the holy trilogy will never be bettered by anybody at any time, but it’s a sad thing to say but the real Metallica died with Cliff..justice was only ok, the black album was what they needed at the time, radio friendly stuff and a massive success then they tried to change direction but load, reload, St anger…bad, death magnetic was when I think they found themselves again, and may it last forever!
Compression helps eliminate bleed over from subharmonics and undertones, it's very important to the recording process. The trick is to not use too much, because when you do the sound quality becomes effected, usually resulting in a thin, tinny sounding mix.
My dude, Painkiller, especially the title track will give you serious case of the Holy Shits. Musically is pure awesome but they did crank the cheese to 11 on the lyrics. But hey, they wouldn't be JP without cheesy ass lyrics.
Robert Trujillo really helped bring back that Metallica energy. 🔥🤘🏽
Rick Rubin actually pushed them to play in Standard tuning and go full 80s
Death Magnetic is an Underrated Album imo, the problem is the production of the Album that it is so loud but in the vinyl version this album is a Banger.
Like DH said, it’s not as bad as AJFA, but given how much recording has changed since the late 80s it’s almost less forgivable.

For reference, Guitar Hero 3 tracks of the album have little to no compression.

No need to adjust anything on the EQ of whatever you are using to listen to the album.
gotta try to listen to My Apocalypse from Death Magnetic it is similar to Dyers Eve 👍
You should look up the Guitar Hero versions of Death Magnetic. They got the uncompressed tracks and they are considered the definitive versions.
Oh my God I can't wait to see your reaction to Painkiller 😁
Fantastic reaction, please react to My Apocalypse off Death Magnetic!
Starts out very Korn-like. I do love it when you hear Metallica and the boys manage to get you so hyped.
It's a great album for sure. You gotta check out their new song that just came out
From Death Magnetic you should check My Apocalypse, it's by far the best song!
Great album amazing tour songs from this album are amazing live very under rated. Gotta check out all nightmare long one hell of a song
Dave, you’re in the industry. Would love you to do a top 10 metal guitarists, drummers, etc.
I've done a couple of those in the Q&A videos.
If you really want to hear an old MetallicA track from the same album. Listen to My Apocalypse! There is even a riff in that song written by Kirk, that he wrote a long time ago for Exodus but never used it until 2008!
I actually like this album better than Hardwired to Self Destruct but the snare drum on this album drives me crazy.
The Ride the lightning is your favorite then you need to react to The Day That Never Ends it of the Deat Megnetic it's basically the same as Fade To Black I love to see your reaction to it
Would like to hear a review of the new album 72 seasons.
This album is very much Justice meets Black Album imo. It’s a GREAT cd. Enjoy.
great song 🤟
Death Magnetic is a 21st century Master Of Puppets. Fact.
And this tour is one of the best in their career. Was lucky enough to see them twice then.
Long live Metallica!!!!
Oh and Painkiller is a fucking beast
Pretty sure they won alot of awards for this album. I remember the hype about this album when it came out.
Bro you GOT to listen to Suicide and Redemption from their death magnetic album. Its an instrumental and in my opinion their best!
try the album PAINKILLER to me there best album easily.
and david lovebites does of a cover of painkiller by judas priest and they nail it
Your Metallica dropoff sounds like mine, except I prefer Kill em all as my favorite.
There's a great (and ancient) comparison with the original CD and GH3 rip version of "The Day That Never Comes" with the volumes normalised at th-cam.com/video/6Nfqpr3ygSg/w-d-xo.html - if you want to see how truly dreadful the original loudness wars master was :)
PS: forget about St. Anger, I only managed to struggle through that album once. Death Magnetic (when not killed by compression) and Hardwired are great albums, though!
Absolutely, the best version of Death Magnetic from a compression standpoint is the Guitar Hero 3 rip.
I'll never understand why they don't play this song more often, is an absolute masterpiece
You should check out songs on Beyond Magnetic
Thats great brother, unfortunately I couldn't stomach most of them. At least we agree on sweet Amber lol 🙂
@@chrisblinman9150 That's funny, I have a few songs from St. Anger that I keep coming back to, but Some Kind of Monster is definitely not among them. I can't stand that one. Sweet Amber seems to be the common denominator though. 😅
Apart from that one I also like the title track, Unnamed Feeling, and, oddly enough, All Within My Hands.
Thank you TH-cam, best commercial break EVER :D
"im an idiot" BANG Commercial :P
This song is pretty good, another very good one from this album is Cyanide.
Load and Re-Load were my introductions to Metallica, believe it or not.
Metallica was never dead :) I love this album!
“I was a Metallica fan up through And Justice For All” is the fastest way to lose one’s credibility.
If you say so....
Wish they’d break this out for the live shows again
Like Metallica's collaboration with Lou Reed called Lulu. lol
Do more from DM and Hardwired...
Please react to Master of Puppets live in Manchester 2019
Over All this Album was a return to form for Metallica after LuLu and St. Anger
About St.
The beginning drums sound like don't tread on me
Metallica occupies a separate shelf in the music library of a true rocker, because their melodies cut into the soul very much. Every fan has their favorite albums from them, and they weigh a lot, because they have an incredible amount of energy and aggression, or musicality and deep feelings.
This is old but something that doesn’t get talked about in this song is the really punky chorus.
Ride The Lightning is their best, you are correct sir.
Can someone explain "compression" to me? Not familiar with the term musically.
Compression helps eliminate bleed over from subharmonics and undertones, it's very important to the recording process. The trick is to not use too much, because when you do the sound quality becomes effected, usually resulting in a thin, tinny sounding mix.
@@THEDavidHeretic Thanks for the info.
If only this album had the production of master or the black album it would be a top 3 for me
Good
My dude, Painkiller, especially the title track will give you serious case of the Holy Shits. Musically is pure awesome but they did crank the cheese to 11 on the lyrics. But hey, they wouldn't be JP without cheesy ass lyrics.
great song
