Also @LOJO I think that you should make a creek that goes into your pond so it gets some water circulation, to power the creek just use a pump from your pond to the creek and the creek will go into the pond
I'm not one to watch a guy out in a boat on a lake fishing but when you mix in your kayak or canoe with exploring your new property it's much more interesting. Tip for a big guy alone in a canoe, sit backwards in the front seat facing the rear. It helps balance.
You should be able to easily get or make an outrigger for the old canoe. Will definitely help with the balance. Replace the jug line with 550, paracord or even venetian blind cord. Slap a fibreglass patch on the inside and outside of the canoe. Home depot, tractor supplies or Lowes should have them, even an auto parts store.
If you put a small ice chest in the center of the canoe and sit on it you have more stability especially with one person in the canoe. It will run more like a kayak.
You should use a rod and reel, tie a hook with a leader already on it, make sure you leave about a foot to 2 foot tag end, the. you tie a sinker onto the tag end, i use that all the time when i’m fishing for cats, works every time

I personally like to be in the meddle like you were but my knees won't let me stay like that for long so I had a removable seat that hung off the gunnels . And don't worry about the canoe sinking with both of you it should be able to support about 1500pounds .

You probably had a snapping turtle or 2. We used to use gallon jugs with a wire leader, and a big hook, and would throw the jug out, and come back the next day, and find the jugs, with turtles on the end of them. if you put on some more line, and still find them broke off, use a wire leader.
