John, thanks for the recap, as they say, "if it was easy, everyone would do it," and I know I couldn't... not yet! Keep on keeping on, New Year, new opportunity 💪
Great effort!! I remember thinking of you that day (brrrr it was cold) since I live in nearby Maryland. DNFs are part of doing Ultras. Onward to your next race!
That's a tough break. I'm mainly a road runner (5K, 10K, half marathon) but I appreciate your detailed explanation of this race. In fact, I ran a half today in the cold rain and while it was miserable, I would take that over hot and humid here in Alabama. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
Smart call to pull. Like you, I had trained so perfectly for my 100m with 10k vert (flatlander here 😂) and was having a perfect day in regards to cooling, hydration, nutrition, pace, etc. Then at mile 32 on a downhill my knee twisted on a loose rock and it popped, immediate pain 10/10 and could not bear weight. I wanted to finish so badly I chose to keep going for another 32 miles … hobbling on technical terrain. I ended up pulling and ended up needing subsequent meniscus surgery. A year later I’m all good and back to ultras, but I often wonder if I pulled immediately would I have needed surgery? So many lessons to learn on these ultra quests. I’ve been a distance runner for 30 years and I’m still learning 😊. Best of luck on your next endeavor!
It only takes one thing. On rhat particular course, you have to be 100%. We do these things because they are challenging. Great effort
Very true! It will take your soul!
Always appreciate your honesty and insight. Thank you for your content
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! I appreciate that.

Always!💪🏼💪🏼
Good break down. Good call on bailing
Never an easy thing to do…especially after a year of cancelled races.

It definitely was a rough one, but thanks for the well wishes!

Sometimes it's just a lot smarter to quit.
I ran the 50k this year at devil dog. Only had to go over the rock section twice but second time I was full on hating those rocks.
No doubt. I’ve been doing races over that section for about eight years and I hate that section with every ounce of my body..
That's tough.
Gut punch for sure
Jax beach to Ponce.........
Daytona 100 is on the list for sure!
