Great hands-on review. I’ve (had) all three versions of the X-Pro line, but the 2 is easily my favourite. Started with the X-Pro1 in 2014, moving to the X-Pro2 in 2016 and had a trial-run with the X-Pro3 last year. For personal work I still use the X-Pro2 with a set of f2 WR primes and the 14/f2.8 instead of the 16/f2.8. For professional work I moved from X-H1/X-T3 to full-frame. From the X-Pro1 to the 2 is a big step up in most aspects. Some people prefer the filmic look of the 16MP sensor vs the 24MP in the X-Pro2. I’ve tried some A-B comparisons with a good friend and Fuji-enthousiast and he couldn’t tell the 2 cameras apart on that topic. The X-Pro2 however has a disctinct edge when it comes to AF and high iso performance as well as the ability to crop images more drastically and the quality of the viewfinder and the LCD. The X-Pro3 to me is a step back and I returned the test model. For me the LCD doesn’t work and it’s just one additional action to flip the screen for menu access. I’d rather see a tilting screen like the X100V. The 26MP sensor to me has very little added value except for faster AF. The OVF is a step back with its single magnification compared to the dual magnification in the X-Pro2. I’d love to see Fuji to allow the back button focus being assigned to the Fn2 button (the push button in the viewfinder lever) as part of a firmware update. That way you could have back button focus under your middle finger as indeed the regular AF-L forces your thumb in a strange position. Adding the optional grip improves that a bit by the way, but a firmware update would be better.
I bought a dinged up, used xpro 2 at the end of 2020, stuck the 23 mm f2 on it and fell in love with it. A classic? Maybe. Fun for street and urban landscape shooting absolutely. The back button focus is a pain, I hit the q menu button half the time, but I live with it.
The blue wall as a back ground just works perfect. The people seemed to like their picture getting taken. But on the other hand I think it's easy to lay contact with you. Friendly and always smiling. The images are great.
Very enjoyable video, thanks Gareth. I get the philosophy behind the X-Pro-2 and I am thinking of getting a used one. I currently own an XT2 which I will be keeping, will I notice the EVF of the X-Pro-2 to be much different to the XT2?
I'm with you Gareth the Pro 2 and XT2 are the sweet spot for photographers in the Fujifilm line, yes the newer cameras slightly faster and better video, but end results for images is negligible. I personally think the Pro 2 is a good looking camera as well and still has D pad.. hallelujah..😂
You watch 1000 youtube videos about how to stealthily take someone's picture in the street. Then another 1000 on your disposition towards people while shooting (posed) street portraits And then Gareth says to a strange girl: "High ya!!!" and disarms any resistance... Lol !!! Great video and great shots!
The xpro 1 af lock button is much closer to where your thumb rests. I’ve noticed that playing with an xpro 2. A little hack I’ve done is put a piece of skateboard grip tape over it, so you can find it faster.
Very enjoyable to watch. I have two XPro2’s, the graphite and black. They are amazing cameras when used with the 23, 35 & 50 f2’s. I’ve owned the XPro1 in the past and loved the output but was frustrated with some aspects. The XPro2 is a significant upgrade and I agree that it’s a modern classic. Cheers👍
I was looking into that camera because I really like the rangefinder appearance of it and the beast of a sensor it has. I gave myself a budget but all of the ones a looked at were well above it. I decided on a used X-E3 and XF 27mm 2.8 lens. It's the same sensor and processor so I'm happy. The only issue I have is that I'm so accustomed to using my Nikon D5600 that I find myself fumbling around with the settings on the X-E3 while out shooting. Also, that front thumb wheel is quite sensitive.
@@blood_n_guts_murphy it's a great little camera, but it truly is fiddly. I wanted the xpro2 cause I wanted a modern rangefinder style camera, 24 megapixel sensor, and xtrans III but for a cheaper price I went with the X-E3 which gives me 2.25 out of the 3. Another thing I'm trying to get used to is the EVF and lack of OVF, which I much prefer. I don't like shooting with the back screen either so I'll have to get used to it. Aside from those things, it's a powerful little camera. I have no plans on parting with it.
@@atroche1978 I couldn't see through the EVF on the XE3 and hated the fiddly joystick, so it had to go. Would love an X Pro 2 (as I loved the MP bump and Acros), but I like to drop my camera after taking candids and it would hurt like the XT3 did. Would be more than happy with an X Pro 3 too, as I don't mind the screen. Not worth the pain though, which is good for the wallet too. Hoping the XE4 is more simple and solid feeling like the XE2. An XT3 sized EVF would be a dream, but not possible. I used to love shooting with both eyes open on the XT3, which I assume can be done on an X Pro, but had to hold the camera sideways due to my big nose.
Hi Gareth, great video - enjoyed it! Have you ever tried the X-E3? It's also rangefinder style with same sensor and processor as the X-Pro2 but smaller, lighter and cheaper. I love mine and use it in preference to my X-T2 when I want to travel light and/or do street shooting (I tend to leave the battery grip permanently attached to the X-T2). The downsides compared to the X-Pro2 are no OVF and no weather sealing. The X-E3 makes a great combination with my 16mm f2.8, 35mm f2 and 50mm f2 primes.
I have owned the Pro 2 since it first came out and love it. I also picked up the XT20 which has the same sensor and processor as the Pro 2. There are many hidden features in that the buttons do more than one thing and there are some good tutorials that you can see online. I have been shooting since 1959, and the Fuji cameras are the best I have owned. I went to London three years ago and wished I could get back there but not sure I will. Just found your videos.
Gareth, mate... Asked you this question months ago and I want to see if the answer has changed. Do you believe the sensor upgrade in the xt-4 is enough of a reason to grab the newer model or hang onto my X Pro 2 and wait for the "XPro 4", if that's the "future"?
I saw this hack recently and thought it might work out for your back-button focus issue. Putting a small bit of Sugro on the buttons so that you will be able to find them by touch. I'm going to try the same thing I my camera.
Great video and shots. I don't know if this works on the Pro2, but I did find the same issue as you with the backbutton focus on my pro3. Ended up using the button on the front. The one on the leveller to switch between OVF and EVF. As I said, don't know if you ca assign this button on the Pro2. But if you can, it works really well :)
After 7 years in the UK, I've realised that a 10% chance of rain actually means that it will 100% rain at least for a 10% of the day/hour . BUT IT WILL RAIN!😅
I bought a second new XPro2 this year while I still could. The Xpro3 is a fine camera, it has upgrades but also downgrades (the more limited optical viewfinder in particular), so that makes it a very different camera to use. I'm usually a sucker for the latest kit but my XPro2's are as good as it gets for me, at least until we see what the XPro4 has to offer!? ;-) Digital has matured now to the point where it's just not necessary to have the latest thing.
I agree with you 100% on the merits of the X-Pro2. It is my favourite among my 5 different Fujifilm cameras. Your "blue screen" portraits are terrific ... well done. Also enjoyed your enthusiasm on getting out on the street again.
I can never find buttons on the back by touch either but I just use the top function button for “back” button focusing. I prefer using the same finger for focus and shutter and still have the separation of the two that way.
Hi Gareth, another great video! I have a question, I’m trying to get my head around back button focusing, does this method work in hand with manual focusing?? Any info on this method would be greatly received!, please keep on with the great videos!. Rob.
Robert, the way it would work in hand with manual focusing is that you can go directly to manual focus without having to flick a switch on the lens to go from auto to manual focus. Auto focus only engages when the back button is pressed. I've not a Fuji shooter, I use Canon. I hope this helps.
1) You can shoot in fluorescent light with electronic shutter for the most part, IF you shoot at 1/8th or longer. 2) I didn't owned nor hold X-Pro3 yet, but I've heard it doesn't support 16mm or wider lenses via OVF. Reason alone not to buy the X-Pro3 for me. 3) I'm considering buying the X-Pro2. 4) Few fears ago I bought myself an 16mm f1,4. And I need f1,4, course I'm a night hawk 😁
Agreed the XPro2 is a classic camera, in fact it was one from day of release IMHO. I bought mine when they were first released and from memory they weren’t cheap and were actually pitched by Fuji as their top of the range camera, sitting above the XT range at that time. Although I’ve flirted with other manufacturers since and now use Sony most of the time, I still own my XPro2 and it won’t be getting sold.
I have the xpro 1, its image output quality is absolutely fantastic, to my eyes, it out does my xt3. The images just look 3d, whereas I feel the xt3 files look flat..?
Gazza, I just don’t think they’ve quite nailed it with the rangefinder type cameras in my opinion. Not quite enough for me to pull the trigger anyway! They are very close, but just not hitting the sweet spot for me! For me, I actually think the XT30 is a better option, tho not a rangefinder style camera. What I would personally love to see,is a X70 updated camera, I think that would be the unicorn camera. Regards, Dazza. 🇬🇧
@@blood_n_guts_murphy - Yes I tend to agree! I’m not a fan of fully articulating back screens. but love the flip up and tilt screen. I’ve got an XT3 and some good glass, but people tend recoil or run when you whip it out on the street! I used to use a lumix rangefinder style camera and enjoyed the experience of that style camera and would like a Fuji equivalent for the street.
It's a bloody marvellous camera isn't it? I sold a Leica to fund mine! Love the colour rendering you achieved and the fact that you engage with your subject instead of "stealing" the shot. Agree re BBF. It's just not in the right place. Small price to pay though.
If you ever want to try the Xpro 1, drop me a line & you can borrow mine! I've used the 1 & 2 and yes the 2 is the camera that the 1 should be but the sensor of the 1 is more film like than the 2nd generation sensor!
My X-Pro is the version one, I have the more up to date X-T series, but the black and white images off that 16mp sensor is outstanding. Everything else is slow by comparison, but for me, as a portrait shooter, not an issue. It's a nice option to have in the bag. I have the 16mm lense and it is fantastic, I have rather a lot of the Fujifilm primes, and love the 16 for portrait work. I love your posed images in the building site.
Nice one. Pretty much agree with everything you said. I’ve two x-pro 2 bodies and use them for everything. Like you, I back button focus and this is important. I use OVF as much as I can as it helps with composition and looking around the frame. But still use the EVF a lot and I too have experienced banding with fluorescent lighting and electronic shutter. There’s a setting that helps with that though. I love the flexibility of this camera and its ease of use. I won’t bother with the x-pro 3 as I think the 4 is going to be a monster. I feel that they’re going to bang in a huge sensor, make the viewfinder even better and sort out any other issues. I reckon the 4 will replace the GFX50r but will be smaller and lighter etc. I gave my x-pro 1 to my daughter and she barely uses it but it’s still a great camera. If you want a look, most of my website (www.philjacksonphotographer.co.uk), with its broad content, is shot on X-Pro 2. I admire you’re enthusiasm and willingness to try anything. Cheers!
The improvements from the X-Pro1 to the X-Pro2 were far more significant than from the X-Pro2 to the X-Pro3. X-Pro2 offers some tangible benefits over the X-Pro3. IMHO, the "older" 24MP sensor renders a bit better, particularly in low light.
Another great video. Great to see the images from the street with the 16mm. I've been looking at used x-pro 3's. Also great to see there were so many great oportunities on the streets of London. Just got back from a photo walk in Portland. Unfortunately between COVID and all the protests/riots, our city has changed dramatically this year.
The 16mm/f2.8 lens is a joy to use. It took a little getting used to for street work. However, I have really enjoyed using it on the street. Nice video presentation. Miss your city, terribly. Regards...Wayne
Great video. I own an X-Pro 3 and I do love it. The EVF is much improved on the X-Pro3 (from what I've read) over the X-Pro 2, 3.69m dot OLED EVF vs. 2.36m dots. However, the fact that you can get a gently used X-Pro 2 for $1000 USD less than an X-Pro 3...and it's still more than capable, makes it a great camera!
Thank you Gareth, honestly much better photos than I suspected from the start (not really a street photography fan), but those blue background/red hats portraits are very very nice. Love it. Did you use a color profile? Astia maybe? or edited the blue tones yourself?
100% agree with BBF, the X-Pro line is the only cameras that I don't use BBF. They didn't improve that button placement or feel at all on the X-Pro 3 unfortunately. But that still doesn't stop me loving them, though the X100V has stolen the title of my favorite camera from my X-Pro3 :D
Great video! Back Button Focus on the x-pro2? Well just do like the rest of us. Use Sugru, and you will never miss that button again ;) And you can change the two lock buttons in Wrench / Button/Dial Setting / AE-L/AF-L Button Setting. Just switch them around.
Sweet video. These kind of pics really inspire me to get out myself and try talking to people as opposed to 100% candid photos. The xt2/3 are my "classic" cameras :D
Loved the video, well done ... I have the X-Pro2 and love it with the 35 f2 (primary walkabout/street) and 16 f1.4 (primary night/landscape) ... I think I should give the 16mm a shot on the streets now :) ... I've though a lot about selling/trading at different times for the X100 series or X-Pro3 but feet get too itchy and palms start to sweat ... The gut tells me will personally lose more than I gain ... Right now, I'm holding onto the X-Pro2.
Yes, it's a 'Classic'. I'd never sell mine. I love it. Also, the 16mm f2.8 and the 50mm f2 are my favourite Fuji primes. Particularly the 50. That's a very special lens. Great video Gareth. Thanks.
interesting video , some nice shots and thanks for sharing , the video footage however is so so shaky, was that shot using the Osmo action or the Osmo mobile ?
@@GarethDanks yes I find it very strange why it was acting like this , I am part of the app development team for DJI perhaps it’s something we should investigate. Have you played around with the settings on the device ?
If your nervous about street photography, try to going out with another photographer if possible. Some people have trouble approaching people to ask them to pose, Themed events are good to start on, steampunk or the WW11 events as people are dressing up and like their photos taken .
Another fantastic video, I myself own the x-pro2, and I will never get rid of it, I love using it, so I will use it more then likely till it dies on me haha, have a great week..
I’ve got a 2 and 3 and the 3’s better. Both the workflow and images are better. The only thing better on the 2 is the diopter, but everyone I’ve met uses the EVF anyway because a lot of lenses get in the way of the frame using the OVF
I'm glad you did so well in London. You look very happy. I already told you that the 16mm is fantastic. But I didn't expect enviromental portraits. I take good note!
Good video, I much prefer these style of your photos, rather than the arty silhouette type stuff... Also can't agree more about the Xpro2, brilliant camera, and can't see it really becoming obsolete any time soon. AF is fast enough, quality at 24mp means you can crop, and I think low light is very good... I've made a few shots at 12500 Iso and they look fine.. grainy like a 3200 neg. I also agree about the 50mm F2, a lens I always have on one body, with a 23mm f2 on another.... I'll have to get the 16mm I think. I'm also thinking of looking at the Viltrox 56mm, although I've not really used anything other than the two above mentioned lenses since I got them. I also tape up the dioptre and the exp comp (set to C).. I assign the comp to the front wheel, which is nice as with a press you can lock it. I also find the grip worth it, even if it adds a bit of weight, combine with a thumbs up type attachment, I feels very sure in the hand. It also protects the base plate of the camera from chips and bangs... A do add a bit of gaffer to the top plate for the same reason.. with 2 cameras on one shoulder they can bang together.. the tape stops any damage or chipping.. Re the Xpro1.. I had a couple of these before the Xpro2. while the image is nice, the resolution is poorer, the AF very frustrating, but particularly the slow buffer which is full after only a few shots. If you think the Xpro2 has a low res EVF, don't try the Xpro1.. it is very poor and has awful lag... A nice camera but not as easy or fast to use as the Xpro2..

Dazza. 🇬🇧
Fingers crossed for the XE4. Most people want the flip screen and lots back to the XE2 size EVF. Then it will be perfect. X Pro too heavy for me.
Great Video 👍👍 lovely people in London. The x pro2 is a wonderful camera, I own the XT 3 myself and the 16mm f2.8 lens is fantastic.😎
It's a bloody marvellous camera isn't it? I sold a Leica to fund mine! Love the colour rendering you achieved and the fact that you engage with your subject instead of "stealing" the shot. Agree re BBF. It's just not in the right place. Small price to pay though.
Awesome mate. I really miss London. I really recommend F/8 Magazine to all Street Photographer enthusiasts.
Taking stranger photos becomes addictive......lol. Great video 📷👍
Fun video! Thanks.
Cheers mate. Thanks for watching
Cracking film, complimented with a plethora of stunning captures. Why haven’t we shot London together?
Hey thanks mate. Really kind of you. I’m def up for that buddy. Give me a date. I’m here now if that helps haha
Hey thanks so much mate. Really glad you enjoyed. I need to have a play with the pro1 for bw.
Do you still own and use the Pro2?
Cheers!
Great vlog mate and excellent images .
Hey mark. Thanks for watching mate
@@GarethDanks never miss mate 👍
Really enjoyed the portraits! Great video. You are a natural even if you do feel nervous. I am surprised at how many people smoke there!
Some cracking images Gareth, looks like you had a blast.
X-Pro2 is still the camera it was when it was released...
Also, 5:44 ... Instax!
Waited for the launch of the x-pro3 in order to buy the discounted x-pro2. Was told it was the last on the shelf at Fujifilm UK.
Thank you Gareth, honestly much better photos than I suspected from the start (not really a street photography fan), but those blue background/red hats portraits are very very nice. Love it. Did you use a color profile? Astia maybe? or edited the blue tones yourself?
Excellent!!!greetings from Mar del Plata Argentina
Nice one Dirk
working the scene. nice job
Enjoyed the video, many thanks!
16mm I just bought one and I'm receiving it on Friday. I can't wait till it gets here to hit the streets.
Thanks.
Thank you so much Tony!! i need to use my 50 more for sure!!
interesting video , some nice shots and thanks for sharing , the video footage however is so so shaky, was that shot using the Osmo action or the Osmo mobile ?
osmo.. i dont know why it played up in this video sorry
@@GarethDanks yes I find it very strange why it was acting like this , I am part of the app development team for DJI perhaps it’s something we should investigate. Have you played around with the settings on the device ?
The asked & posed photos, really nice !
Well done, very nice results!
Never heard of the camera but you got some great images with it! Well done and thank you...
Great work Gareth I used both the Xpro1 and Xpro2 and if I had a choice for speed it’s the 2 for black and white it’s the xpro1!
If your nervous about street photography, try to going out with another photographer if possible. Some people have trouble approaching people to ask them to pose, Themed events are good to start on, steampunk or the WW11 events as people are dressing up and like their photos taken .
I love your enthusiasm and the photos! I use a Fuji X100 V and a Ricoh GRiii
Another fantastic video, I myself own the x-pro2, and I will never get rid of it, I love using it, so I will use it more then likely till it dies on me haha, have a great week..
Nice one Gareth, this was a pleasure to watch.
Hey thanks so much Clive. Much appreciated
Interesting cheers! I was looking into xpro1 but no dioptre adjustment and funny place for the back button puts me off. They sorted it for xpro2
I’ve got a 2 and 3 and the 3’s better. Both the workflow and images are better. The only thing better on the 2 is the diopter, but everyone I’ve met uses the EVF anyway because a lot of lenses get in the way of the frame using the OVF

Great street mate I really am looking forward to coming out with you in 2021
We're coming out?? gulp!! thats me in the soup!! haha
Ssshh don't say it out loud
I'm glad you did so well in London. You look very happy. I already told you that the 16mm is fantastic. But I didn't expect enviromental portraits. I take good note!
Just stumbled upon this channel and I really love the images you got here! Subbed.
What’s back button focus and why is it better than “non back” button focus? Thank you for your answer.
Oh. You answered it in the video.
You get nervous!!! Great confidence gar, I’d be using my 300 mm lens . Love the shots btw
Haha. From the coffee shop over the road
Haven’t upgraded to the Xpro3?
Cool vlog & nice set of images Ga
Hey thanks for watching andy. Hope
Your good mate
