In a video where it's kind important to hear the dialog, the NFL decides to play music over-top of everything. Great.
This is why it should be manditory to take a few seconds and have the ref verbally confirm with the player what he wishes to call before jumping the gun and flipping it immediately. Do it twice if you have to!
They do that now. You can see in the more recent clips that they have them call before they flip it rather than while it's in the air.
I realize that, but there is one where to ref verbalizes the wrong call without checking if he's correct before flipping it. Without clear communication it's just as bad as intentionally cheating.

Ryan Kennedy On NFL network top 10 they actually looked at it, and with certain mica you can hear Bettis say "He-Tails" and when the ref is explaining it to Cower you can hear Bettis say "I changed it before it hit the ground."
ik this is an old comment but he said heads first. you can hear it faintly, the only reason why you could hear tails clearly was because the refs microphone got closer to Bettis
Old comment but there are clips where he said he changed it to tails. By rule at that time once you made that decision you cannot change it. During the discussion on the sideline you can hear them talking about how it did not hit the ground meaning they admitted to saying heads first.

That Matthew Slater one against the Jets arguably cost us from winning the Super Bowl that year. If we had received, there was a good chance we would have scored and won in OT, giving us a 13-3 record and the one seed. Denver would have came to Gillette and with home field advantage, an 18-20 loss could have easily turned into a win.

I've seen 2 of these 5. The Matt Hasslebeck calling his shot was hysterical. And being a Barry Sanders fan, I remember that Lions/Steelers game on Thanksgiving. The game was weird in itself being an 11-11 tie in regulation. Then, the ref misheard Bettis call tails was the weirdest, I think a Lion called heads and that's what the ref heard.

Slater could have chosen to receive, he could have chosen to kick, or he could have chosen which goal he wanted to defend. If he had chosen to defend a particular goal, he'd be choosing what direction he wanted to go. The Jets would then decide to receive and the Pats would end up kicking off in the direction that Slater AND BELICHECK wanted to kick. Instead, Slater chose to KICK. Then the Jets got chose the direction. So now the Pats not only kicked off but had to kick in the wrong direction. That's how coin toss options work. What don't you understand?

With Bettis, the ref asked him to call while the coin was in the air, Bettis does, and then the ref says he called heads before the toss. The ref must have spaced in the moment. It happens.
Big Hawks fan, and I love those moments which make you embarrassed to be a fan of your team. More than Hasselbeck's guarantee, I love all the Hawks players saying heads when the coin lands. That team hadn't been to the playoffs, and you could tell they'd never been there before.
you can clearly hear the ref say to bettis "call it please" in which bettis replies "heads" then in the middle of the coin toss, bettis says "tails" in this situation, the ref has to go for the first decision bettis made so bettis has no right to be mad at this call.

The first-matchup between the New England Patriots and Miami Dolphins in 2003 contained an awkward coin-toss prior to overtime. I'm surprised that wasn't included on this list.
I love the one where the ref tossed the coin and it didn't flip once it just went straight up and down.
What about the 2003 Patriots/Dolphins OT coin toss when the Patriots argued that the coin landed on "tails" and not "heads" while the referee tells them they're confused of which side is which.
