Loooove how this dress is turning out so far! 😍 I saw a hemming hack recently that said to get the hem even, cut your fabric, then hang the fabric on a coat hanger or manequin for a few days. This lets the garment stretch to the shape that gravity will make it, so THEN you can make the final cut and it will stay how you cut it!

Ok I love your channel. So hate to say anything but it is driving me crazy I must. The one thing I learned from my mom ,a seamstress, is the first rule of sewing aways WASH/Dry the fabric! Especially cotton. Fabric is stabilized for the roll but with cotton it will shrink. Once washed and dried then you can iron and cut out your fabric. You would have enough to make a coat and get way more wears.

This really is the perfect dress for anyone, at any age, size etc to wear. You could keep this pattern for future dresses and just adjust it slightly to make it in to a completely different dress. I can imagine it made in a rich velvet with wispy voile/chiffon sleeves. It’s simply beautiful. I can’t wait to see it completed with all of the gorgeous flowers added. Ahhh, those seamstress problems! I used to make corsets for fun and my worst was I'd be sewing along a difficult part, get to the end, think I was done, only to realize that my bobbin had run out at the beginning. I've definitely raged and then put down a project for a while after something like that lol. I commend you for not giving despite your seamstress problems!
Top tip: kids’ felt-tip markers are the best and cheapest fabric markers! Check that they say “washable” on the packaging and test on a scrap of you specific fabric, but I have hardly ever had a problem, even after ironing over the marks. But to be honest, 90% of the time I use pins over drawing on the fabric at all, it’s so much quicker.
You are so real, as you show the good and not so good parts of your sewing travels. Love your style, and creativity... the fact that you rebuilt your manny before you got going with your dress. So impressive. Can't wait for vid #2 on the flower dress.
My hems look like that too. I lay it on the ground, fold it in quarters lengthwise an measure from the waistline. Then cut through all four layers at once following the markings from the waist. It may work on you since you are so slim. As for that dress fitting everyone...it makes me feel hopeful at 64.

Oh the serger problems were so triggering. That is why I got rid of my serger! There are always problems with tension, with fuzzies, with lumpy seams. I just use my very good sewing machine for everything now. Works perfect!
You persisted and met those challenges-Well done! As a knitter I am always unraveling my work. When we find our mistakes and decide nope I'm not going to ignore it and then try again. That is powerful.
Most people use a ruler from the ground to where the edge of the dress is to get an even length all around. That way, where ever you measure it from the ground, it will all hit the same point on the ruler.

Jenna, There is this thing called a hem marker; It is basically a weighted block of wood with a yardstick attached that stands up (you can DIY one with some E6000 all purpose, hot, or wood glue).. As you twirl your model around*, you mark your fabric at the same mark on the stick. NOTE: Also, you should dress your model in the garment and let it hang for 24 hours, maybe 48, before hemming... that way If there are any bias cuts, they will adjust to the hang and be hemmed properly into a straight hem. Another thing is, if your feed dog is it acting up and feeding tOo much too fast or not enough fabric through (equal to what the pressure foot's tension is) on your layers, that will show also and you may need to re-seam a piece or two. That can be why if it wasn't your cutting you come out with janky ends to all of your pieces not matching at the hemline. Of course two it could be the fact that you were pushing it through too fast and the layers were mismatched as to how fast and how much each was going through. So if it's not the machine, it's you. * i suggest putting the hem stick in one place, and twirling the mannequin in place due to the fact that tile floors with cement underlayment can be unlevel. If you move the stick to a different place you can get a different measurement, you see, and a wonky up-n-down hem. Sewing is rather patience game, than a race to finish - the optimal word here being "Finish".
I really love that you show the realities of making your own garment because shit like that just happens even if you checked twice, even if something g you thought would take 15 min takes hours and all the little achievements too as someone who did go to school for ✨️fashun✨️ I really enjoy watching people be confident in just making the thing with reckless abandonment. I love the dress ❤ I have one piece of advice 13:45 I think that you cut the fabric correctly and all the pices were the same length the problem is that the side seams are not straight they are curved or sloped and get stretched out when sewing the seams. I found that it is helpful to stay stitch the the pieces immediately after cutting and before sewing the side seams together I sometimes used to have this problem when sewing the sleeves side seams but stay stitching fixed it. I hope this is helpful 😊

Use pattern paper or a soft cotton to lay over your fabric while you're interfacing. Protects your fabric, iron and ironing board.

Thank you for the tip about the ham! I rolled up an old hand towel and pull one of my orphaned socks over it. It works!
To cut the hem evenly, measure from the floor to the skirt and spin Mannie around keeping the same height from the floor.
That came out so well! also, sewing always takes me so much longer than I think it will.

To do a hem, you measure up from the floor with a yard stick (meter stick?). Perfect hem every time. Learned that a zillion years ago from my professional seamstress grandmother! Thanks, Gram!
tbh the more you eyeball and wing it draping the easier it gets!! i learned to self draft patterns pretty quickly this way
also most local antique stores get giant rolls of linen all the time & its super easy to get a huge one for cheap!!!!

I think I would have sewn the flowers on before I added the lining that way no stitches from the flowers would show, but that is just me, I'm no professional myself and that is a banging dress!

I have one piece of advice 13:45
I think that you cut the fabric correctly and all the pices were the same length the problem is that the side seams are not straight they are curved or sloped and get stretched out when sewing the seams.
I found that it is helpful to stay stitch the the pieces immediately after cutting and before sewing the side seams together I sometimes used to have this problem when sewing the sleeves side seams but stay stitching fixed it.
