Scholar Vinay Sitapati on his pathbreaking new book ‘BJP before Modi’ & Vajpayee-Advani Jugalbandi

L K Advani’s involvement in Rath Yatra was naked, political opportunism, he didn’t have a communal bone in his body, his mother worshipped at a dargah in Sindh before Partition. Atal Behari Vajpayee loved Parliament and the diversity of India’s political space. He wanted Advani to sack Modi, but lost in that battle. They were BJP & India’s ‘jugalbandi,’ says Vinay Sitapati in his book on the BJP’s most interesting duo in decades. Watch this interview with ThePrint’s National Affairs editor Jyoti Malhotra. #ThePrintUninterrupted

Its fine to have your viewpoints and as a regular listener to the show, I want to hear diverse viewpoints, however biased they are. But how often will the guest be interrupted in a show claiming in its title to be the exact opposite? I'll just point out the times at which the guest was interrupted in this show. Then I will show the times when the guest was done speaking and a followup question was asked. See for yourself
Times at which the guest was in the middle of saying something and was interrupted (22)
    4:36,
    6:00,
    7:07,
    8:37,
    9:50,
    10:20,
    11:17,

    34:41,
    34:52,
    35:50,
    39:32,
    39:58
Time when the guest was actually done speaking and a followup question was asked (7) -
    14:03,
    15:30,
    22:44,
    33:18,
    37:15,
    38:46,
    41:23
I hope ThePrint takes this advice as constructive criticism. Would a member of their staff even like to have a 40 minute conversation with me where I interrupt them 22 times during the chat? Mathematically it shows that the host has an attention span less than 2 minutes. The same criticism has been levied in several other conversations as well. I hope the host changes the way of conducting such conversations over a period of time. The guests, whatever their views, are well-read and interesting in their opinions in most cases. The show should add to that and let the conversation flow. There are so many podcasts with millions of followers that they can refer to, if they wish to improve upon this rather easy to address flaw (all you have to do is stay quiet).

I think the BJP tries to use the "good cop, bad cop" method in politics.
In every era, they have a moderate politician (good cop), and a radical politician to complement him.
In the 80s, 90s and early 2000s, it was Vajpayee (moderate/good cop) and Advani (radical/bad cop).
If you try and look at how Modi and Shah are behaving nowadays, you'll see a similarity. Since becoming PM, Modi has stopped speaking very controversial stuff and mostly speaks generic PM stuff. Shah on the other hand, is much more fiery and has often spoken controversial stuff.
Nowadays, Modi is trying to play the moderate/good cop, while Shah is trying to play the radical/bad cop.

Yes I too noticed she got happy when the mention of Atal ji's personal life started. To be fair to her I think she was happy that a woman who openly celebrated her sexuality got mentioned. I personally am in favour of women eventually to get their due respect ... I was a teenager when I heard a relative boast that her brother had many girlfriends and I purely out of the teenage habit of trying to irritate adults asked that relative "would you have boasted like this had your sister had many boyfriends". I grew up to be ok in the sense that I respect women and men and people who are not comfortable identifying with either sex.
So yes me happy about women getting respect.

It's absolutely absurd and disgusting to say that the Muslims who are left in India after partition are the worst sufferers!!! It's similar to the absurd statement of Manmohan Singh that the first right on the rources of India belongs to Muslims? Why boss? All others must be reduced to 2nd class citizens, it meant! Hasn't Hindu suffered in partition? You buggers would never ever remember the utterly disgusting state and the rapecious persecution of Kashmiri Pundits by Muslim hardline in Kashmir....would you buggers ever recognise that Hindus also suffer? It's not to berate any minority, I say the above but how do you claim yourself as constitutionally minded people who don't recognise that everyone of the citizens is equal even if he is from majority community! Is it damn essential for becoming constitutional minded that majority community is essentially berated? Minority community should also be not berated, of course!
