    i have a PhD in clinical psychology. Last weekend I was invited to a dinner, I was drinking tea after dinner, and wanted to look on my watch... i burned my lap with the tea whilst trying. My point is.... degrees are not an indicator for intelligence XD also you (the person who sent the e mail) sound a bit pretencious... my fiancé didn't have the opportunity to have the education I had, cause he lived in a war zone for quite a while. He is by far the most intelligent person I know. Wonderful artist, deeply kind to others cause he has seen so much bad and he is absolutely hilarious. He might not know what I know.. but he knows so many different things. Maybe try to see what she is an expert in, cause we are all experts in something

  • @samantha.mariam
    @samantha.mariam 7 ปีที่แล้ว +373

    The man's own insecurities show with how hard he's trying to sound smart - but resulting in sounding a bit pompous cos he's using 'fancy words' in the wrong context. These kind of stories concern me because a lot of women in a lot of cultures are discouraged from getting an education and pressured to stay at home and be a 'good wife'. In psychology, these issues fit something called the "content model" by fiske, cuddy and glick. It's the case of "high warmth = low competence" - the warmer someone appears to be, the more likely they will be perceived to be less competent. It's so unfair for a lot of women who are restricted into these traditional roles due to culture because they're trying their best to fulfil their community's idea of being a 'good wife' but all the while, they are also seen as incompetent. Lose lose situation and it's even worst when people like this guy admits to belittling/undermining his wife. I love Sid and Dina for showing everyone that people don't need to follow traditional gender roles anymore (eg woman cooks, man makes the money). It's 2017 and every marriage is different so do what works for your marriage and don't bother with what gossiping aunties have to say about how you do things.

      Agree totally with you, pompous is right. Perception is a funny thing and happens across all cultures, I worked in the kitchen of a large hospital for the last ten years of my working life because it suited me and the money was good, but I soon worked out that other people from the management up, Doctors and Nurses included thought you must be less intelligent or under educated to be doing the job. I loved being able to put them right (nicely) by my speech and my actions. Sounds like she may actually be better off without him !

    Emotional intelligence is so important, and people often disregard it. You can be the smartest person in the world but if you can't be empathetic and handle interpersonal relationships, you won't get anywhere in life.

  • @asmaafk3258
    @asmaafk3258 7 ปีที่แล้ว +74

    To be honest, I don't think the thing that causes the issue in their relationship is the ''lack of intellectual stimulation'' as he claims, but rather the fact that the guy has some kind of superiority complex and considers himself superior to his wife solely because he thinks that he is ''intellectual''. I mean, what does he even really mean when he says that she is not smart enough? Are we speaking academically? Perhaps she might not have a high education and be an expert in that field, but she could excel in other areas (I'm only assuming of course!). Maybe she knows a whole lot about being a kind and loving mother and wife? Or I don't know, maybe she's an expert on a certain issue, she has a passion for climate change or she cares a lot about the rights and history of women or ethnic minorities? And if she doesn't, maybe she is willing to listen and learn? It has always felt so strange to me that we choose to categorize people as clever or not clever, solely based on their academic/educational background. Doing great in school does not necessarily define your intelligence.
    Sometimes when we think that an obstacle arises in our lives due to external factors, it can be so much more productive for us when we choose to look inside of ourselves rather than blaming everything else. That is truly when we realize that our egos can ruin a lot for us. Trust me, this is something that I try to remember myself because it's an issue I struggle with as well, it's something that we all struggle with given that we all possess egos.
    I do agree with the advice that Sid and Dina gave. It is true that a divorce can do more good than bad, and that the issue of divorce needs to be talked about more in the muslim community. However, I don't think a divorce will fix the problems he is dealing with inside himself. If this guy chooses to divorce and is possibly interested in another relationship, the exact same issue will most likely arise if he keeps considering himself superior to others.
    So brother, if you're reading this, I'd like to share some wisdom from the great philosopher Socrates, who once said: ''To know is to know that you know nothing.'' Hence being a ''knowledgeable'' and ''smart'' person lies in the art of knowing that you, essentially, cannot know everything, and that there is always something to learn from the World and the people around us, wether we consider them ''smart'' or ''dumb''. Also, as Kendrick Lamar so beautifully put it in his recent song ''Humble'' : B**** sit down, be humble.

Lighten up . If you want a divorce get it but don't make someone feel inadequate just because they're not like you as not everyone was raised the same .

  • @JR23143
    @JR23143 7 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    Dina, you had a solid point at 8:01. There are different types of intelligence. Someone can be academically smart, or musically talented, or kinesthetically talented etc. Just because you are a person who is for example, intelligent in the logic and mathematics department doesn't mean another person who is not so talented in this area is dumb. I mean, honestly the only thing that is dumb is that kind of logic.

    Coming from a family where my parents divorced when I was 5,I find it so strange when people mention divorce like its something to do if you're not happy. I also find, that children who come from families where their parents are still together, talk about divorce more easily as a solution rather than the last option. I grew up thinking divorce it's normal , it's something that everybody does...let me tell you what I think now , after growing up without my father and marrying out of love. Marriage is not easy and love is not enough to get on with married life. Don't give up easily because the way it affects our kids is beyond our understanding..and I know that because I now started to understand some underlying issues I had with my husband... Nobody is perfect and we all have our short comings... Think before you get married , because our kids shouldn't pay for our mistakes ....that's what I think

    • @maha.b1
      @maha.b1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The problem is not with "divorce" but what happens after (people's behaviour).
      Many parent are so angry and petty that they make terrible decisions or decide to "resign" from their position as a parent figure.
      Marriage is not supposed to be a coffin (with children as snails shutting it) and you obviously need to be happy.
      Everything is about balance and common sense: choose you partner carefully, be patient and do your best but this does not mean that separation is never to be considered.
      I hope that everybody will stop with extreme stances...divorce for futile reasons vs divorce impossible for the sake of x,y,z who end up having a distorted/terrible vision of what marriage is supposed to be.
      I am sorry to read your testimony and hope you do not mind my insight (wishing you a peaceful life full of happiness and love).

    Or just to show the difference he's trying to portray himself as a smart guy
    (Interpreted in many ways)
    But this guy just needs to calm it down.. lad the word argumentation? Really lad? Reallyyy

    I’ve been re-listening to these videos in the background and it’s been great to revisit issues like these with a newer, maturer mindset.
    One point which I think I’ve really related to, is that some well-educated people are hopeless at social discussions. Particularly, science educated, in my experience. They are definitely book-smart but don’t really care or have an open mind regarding social and political issues. On the other hand, I’ve been surrounded by fellow humanities students who are trained to have an open mind and take interest in world issues. Just goes to show, intelligence comes in many forms and sometimes it’s knowing things and other times it’s how to listen.
    I’m so curious as to how this particular issue was resolved. I wish we go follow-ups!

    Guys this is one of my favorite of your advice videos. It's so helpful to so many other types of relationship problems. It isn't a clickbaity kind of issue (not that those aren't important but it's nice to see some diversity in the questions). And mashaAllah you two really sound like you know what you're talking about with this one. I hope that the emailer is able to find some solutions from this. I definitely got a lot.

    I totally agree with Sid and Dina about the "staying for the sake of the kids" thing ! My parents stayed together for my brother and I and to be honest I thing it was a mistake cuz I've always seen them unhappy like all my life ! Tbh I've seen them hanging out together like not even in my home they always in seperate rooms and when they talk it's an argument ... rarely I see them laughing about something and I'm like Wtf ?! And it's been like this for 20 years so when people don't wanna divorce because of the kids, obviously there's a lot of differente situation, it might be the best thing for everyone ! Growing up in a non-loving unhappy parents kind thing is unhealthy.

    His question sounded like he went on thesaurus.com and just found unnecessary synonyms to normal words 😒 he should get off his high horse. Everyone is smart in their own ways. Just because he's not married to Einstein doesn't mean she's not smart.
